There are going to be a few people interested here.  May they form an orderly queue for the closed auction bids.

Very interested as I know someone else that would love to have this one. PM with price or ebay link.

Very interesting unit. Will you list it in eBay?

I will be creating a on-line auction with E-Bay and will post the link here to make it fair. Any questions PM me....

Thanks

It ended at over USD$1,000. Not too shabby for a boxed PX900 (US version PX303).

Not too shabby at all, I had my eye on it!  It's new in the box...was it tested?  If not, do you think this will work perfectly as-is out of the box?

It going have bad capacitors more likely, but someone really wanted it and paid way over the top for it, as I bidded a 1k on it, reason it when high, as it was at $500 before. Only wanted it  to replace a lost one, otherwise won't have bidded as high.

Highly probable it will have leaky capacitors. Not many AIWA walkmans from that era escaped the scourge.

It would be nice to know if the buyer was a member on here and could give us a follow up on their new PX900.

I am stunned by that price. I wish good luck on the new owner's re-capping process.

hey guys, why would the caps leak at all if the unit was never used?
new in box?
I though that would be a result of wear.

maxx134 - 2012-07-16 03:53

ok 4get I just read up on it.
its the result of improper mixture of the solution used in the layers inside the cap,
leading to buildup of hydrogen gas and then balloning or leaking  of the cap.
mainly on caps from certain manufacturers who screwd up copying mixture from competitors.

I think Aiwa just used bad quality caps. Almost all Aiwa's from this period had problems with caps leaking.

The caps that AIWA used would leak because the rubber gasket seal inside the capacitors over time would fail, thus allowing the liquid electrolyte to escape. Now depending on how the walkman was stored, it could cause no damage or a lot of damage to the PCB. For example if the walkman was stored with the unit face up then potentially the electrolyte would leak all over the PCB. If however it was stored with the unit face down then this is less likely to occur and the caps would simply just dry out due to evaporation. In all likelihood the capacitors would probably all need replacing, an ESR meter would quickly establish if they are starting to decline or if in fact dead should there be no obvious external signs that it has expired.
