Sony WM-EX5, like new -> SOLD

walkman.archive - 2013-02-24 06:56

DESCRIPTION: This auction is for a used SONY WM-EX5 in silver color. It's one of the most beautiful modern day players. It has several very unique features that make it special and worth having. One of this features is the vertical-style loading mechanism. Even though it is unusual, I find it very practical and it is more similar to loading an MD player than a cassette player. The other feature that is unique is the transparent acrylic finish of the cassette door. The rest of the exterior is aluminium and generally, it has a very minimalistic design because even the buttons are hidden behind a slidable cover. This walkman is known to have an exceptional sound quality and is one of the best sounding players of the EX series. It has myriad of features that help make this player one of the nicest in general I think. The mechanism is smooth, winding times are very quick and everything is operated with the illuminated remote control. High speed winding is possible even during music search and this brings this player closer to using a CD player than most other cassette players. It's a beautiful piece that would make any beautiful collection even more beautiful..

It has the following features:

-         Unique vertical-style loading mechanism

-         Very thin and light aluminium exterior with acrylic finish for the cassette door

-         AMS Automatic Music Search feature with various ways of finding music on the tape: 9 track music search, one track repeat, automatic blank skip feature

-         Fully automated auto-reverse operation

-         Mega Bass and Groove sound preset equalizer

-         Dolby B noise reduction

-         Automatic tape selector

-         Rechargeable battery system with NiCd flat-type battery

-         Operation is possible with the external AA battery case

-         Super long battery life

-         Fully featured and highly sophisticated remote control with illuminated liquid crystal display

STATUS: PARTIALLY WORKING. Sometimes the mechanism won't start and appears as though it is struggling a bit. This is due to the belt that has stretched and needs to be replaced. However, when it does engage, mechanical operation is quiet and smooth and everything works. Winding times are very fast and even then the mechanism remains quiet. It is obviously of very high quality. Cosmetic condition is beautiful and there are no scratches or any kind of damage. The acrylic cassette door is glossy and pristine and the aluminum parts are very shiny and clean. I think it is as close to being new as possible in this regard.

For details, see the photos.

INCLUDES: Unfortunately, I did not get any accessories with it apart from the soft pouch. It is clear to me that the player has seen very little use, if any, but the owner could have taken better care of accessories because he lost them and that is a shame. Still, the walkman itself should mesmerise anyone if it was put behind a glass ;-)

PRICE: 130 euros. I'm open to offers.

Have one in wooden box

cooper - 2013-02-24 08:29

HI HUGO. This one of the easiest belts to change and the belt is available from (turntableneedels.com) about $4.00 usd and the belt to use needs to be(8.0in.-8.2in. thin belt. hope this helps someone. now you have a real beauty there. bye COOPER. BTW I AM ENJOYING MY (AIWA HS-J2).

walkman.archive - 2013-02-25 01:18

Thanks for the help, Cooper. Although I have an asortment of belts, my few attempts to repair walkmans went not so good, so I decided to keep the belts by now and send the walkmans to repair...

Walkman mechanisms are very small and external switches are delicate and difficult to put again in place when assembling...

I'm happy that you are enjoying your J02. It's nice to know that it has a new, warm  home...  ;-)

@walkgirl: I didn't know the EX5 came with wooden box. I have a wooden box, but for the EX2HG

aob9 - 2013-02-26 12:55

Beautiful machine. I need to start saving.

walkgirl - 2013-02-26 14:54

Yeah, it is actually the box from a ex2hg, but they gave it to me for free when I bought the ex5hg

brutus442 - 2013-02-27 08:32

Beatutiful photography as usual Hugo....you could sell the pictures, nevermind the Walkman!

I wish I knew about this a month or 2 ago..I would have given this a serious thought because I've taken a break from boomers and moved back to Walkmans...and I've spent my money already

Good luck with the sale Hugo...this is a centrepiece of any collection!

walkman.archive - 2013-02-27 15:16

Thanks Brutus, as always. You make me feel proud ;-)

In fact I was thinking in offering high quality prints of some of my favorite images, as a poster. Maybe someone would find it interesting and a good decoration...

Good idea, perhaps maybe a calendar for 2014? Twelve pictures, one walkman for each month.

walknauta - 2013-04-12 07:23

Nice pictures, Hugo.

Here it is how this model comes originally. Still with the protection sheet!

Nice  unit. I don't have the protection sheet, but i do have the box in my main unit.

BTW: I have taken the unit to my technician to service and now it works perfectly. It was completely revised and soon will be listed in ebay.

I have a non-working EX5 that I found out that one of the tape guide is broken.

minty - 2015-02-18 02:21

Here is my recently purchased boxed EX5. I've never seen a boxed EX5 before. Must be pretty scarce.

brutus442 - 2015-02-18 03:40

That's a thing of beauty, Minty!!!

minty - 2015-02-18 04:26

Cheers mate. These Walkmans really look sweet in these custom made boxes.

lapis - 2015-02-18 17:55

The box looks like the one that came together with WM-701T, and WM-701S.

walkman.archive - 2015-02-19 01:00

I have a boxed EX5, but never seen a wooden box EX5!

Congrats Minty!

minty - 2015-02-19 03:50

I've never seen another. I've googled the model number and never seen a picture of a boxed one.

Hi Lexicon78. Sorry for being late.

My settings (ISO, f and shutter) aren't worth at all unless you use *exactly* the same lighting I'm using, specially talking about quantity.

I'm not using any special technique, apart from using good (natural) diffuse lighting, a mid f (usually f/5.6 or 8), the lower ISO I can (usually 400) and the needed shutter speed, that I try to keep above 1/100 for optimun sharpness.

As I'm shooting RAW, the histogram is quite different from the final image histogram, but somehow it's usually displaced to the left because of the main presence of the black background...

good luck!
