WANTED - Sony WM-D6C in proper working order

datuser - 2010-01-08 09:08

I would like to acquire a WM-D6C; I am not bothered if it does not have a mains adapter or headphones; what is important is that it is in good, proper working order; hopefully someone has one in reasonable cosmetic condition with the carry case, but if all I could get was the recorder itself, in working order, that would be fine. Please get in touch if you have one of these machines to dispose of; many thanks, "DATuser".

Hi, there is a really nice one currently on eBay UK. I know the seller well & I'd trust him explicitly.

Confused Big Grin

Thank you - I was already aware of this one and had been tracking it (in the guise of my alter ego MFuser) in the hope that the bidding might not take it out of my reach - and I am glad to say that I managed to secure it this morning at an acceptable price and am now eagerly awaiting its arrival! So my search has not taken too long! Thank you very much again; I am looking forward to continued membership of and participation in this website. I will probably soon advertise, both on here and on ebay, a Sony WM-EX20 (20th anniversary stainless steel walkman) that I would like to sell. It is not operational at the moment (reason unknown - it worked fine last time I used it 2 or 3 years ago) but I am sure there will be an expert out there who will be able to diagnose the problem (perhaps nothing more than a dead gumstick battery or possibly a slight problem with some corrosion near the battery terminal) and remedy it. Cosmetically it is superb with hardly any blemishes at all. Rgds, DATuser.

DATuser, you've probably worked out already that this was in fact my own auction, I hope you didn't think me cheeky with the shameless self-promotion here.

So, superb, many thanks & obviously you know you're getting an excellent unit (I'm at it again, sorry).

I'll try to get this into the post on Monday for you.

Also, we look forward to hearing more about your walkman-based exploits.

Yes, I presumed it was you, or that you were selling it on someone's behalf - glad to be able to be the buyer opposite you as seller!

Apart from simply playing music or sound effect cassettes (such as railway sounds), which is mostly what I did since 1970 or so, I have become interested much more recently in ambient sound recordings and I contribute to the London Sound Survey and am a member of Soundcloud and of the Freesound Project; I use a Sony TCD-D7 DAT recorder (an absolutely superb machine which produces amazing sounding recordings) and an Olympus LS-10 SD card recorder - but I have been reading so much about the WM-D6C recently that even taking into account the inherent limitations of cassettes, I decided I had to get one. I have also ordered a hard to come by, precious, metal bias cassette tape for the best quality ambient sound recording!

Generally speaking I like older equipment (film cameras, cassette and DAT players and valve guitar amps), but I am not slavishly obsessive about these things and do own modern digital equipment of various kinds; it all has its uses in different situations.

Oh, I forgot to say - if you work in Central London, might it be possible to meet you briefly one lunchtime early in the week for personal handover of the WM-D6C? Although losses in the post are pretty rare, damage is always possible and personal handover/collection minimises the chance of this - and is also quicker and cheaper (possibly you could refund the P & P if we were able to meet up for this purpose). I work at Ludgate Circus and can get anywhere in Central London within reason at lunchtime (although sometimes on Mondays I cannot get out because of internal departmental meetings). Would this be a possibility? Ben. PS - have added you as a contact on flickr.

Ben, this sounds very interesting indeedy, let's discuss further next week. I work in Holborn so I suggest a stroll East on Tues maybe? Cris

Sounds just the ticket!

isolator42 - 2010-01-12 09:39

s'cuse the interruption, buit congrats on another fine action sale Cris.
Hand delivered now, eh? You're spoilin' 'em Smile

A spotless transaction, just the way it should be. It annoys me that we have sellers like Mr mediterrano71 (see wlakman chat), the absolute extreme of how things should be done.

isolator42, it could be said that I was spoiling Cris by obviating the need for him to package up the Walkman securely and take it to the post office to post it (joking!)!

In any event, I agree that it was a smooth, spotless transaction and I have acquired a wonderful piece of kit that I am really pleased with. I have posted a recording made with it which I hope may soon appear on the website of the London Sound Survey.

I have not looked at the Walkman chat posts about mediterrano71 but have heard all sorts of similar stories about other traders on ebay and other sites before - all we can do is continually warn innocent people against having any interraction with such folk.

isolator42 - 2010-01-13 04:32

yeh, Cris is one of the best - you'll not find a better set up WM-D6C in the UK. Face to face transactions are always better IMHO, everybody's better off.

As for mediterrano71... dear dear me.
So long as you're honest, it isn't difficult to be a good seller on eBay. Perhaps that's where the issues lie?
