What Cars do you guys drive?

jt.techno - 2014-05-13 06:59

That's a might green city AO - whereabouts in the World do you live?  The cities around my way in South of UK look much more built up and crowded. And I too must also agree ... nice bins

...hmmm, wich one is the car, that one left or one of those two vehicles to the right ???

I drive a bin on wheels too...a Renault Megane Scenic...it really is an awful lump of crap, though I tend to think of it as a shed with wheels rather than a bin. Incredibly cheap to run, tax and insure and I can fit a double wardrobe in it lol...still shit tho

autoreverser - 2014-05-13 08:47

...Renault Migraine ?

Yep

Austin Allegro 1300. Had one of my first driving experiences in one of these, a friend let me drive his and I scraped it badly on a wall. I later drove it properly and it handled slighty worse than AO's brown wheely bin.

Hey, leave my wheely bins out of this

isolator42 - 2014-05-13 14:26

I fairly recently got one of these:

Not particularly exciting, but it ticks all the boxes for me:

Handling is better than it has any right to be, but that's a Focus for you.

I'm getting over 65mpg from the diesel engine... which is nice.

Lots of toys too: cruise control, aircon, auto lights, auto wipers, auto dimming mirror - that sort of thing.

& cos its a Focus, you can park it anywhere & it'll attract zero attention - important in London...

...& as usual, I've fitted a nicely OTT system: Kicker component speakers & a 15" sub, and DAB/Bluetooth/iPod/USB/CD head unit & 1200W amp from Kenwood. Not a boombox on the planet comes vaguely close

seb968 - 2014-05-13 15:02

The Ford Focus will be a future classic in my opinion! They are an excellent car!

jt.techno - 2014-05-13 16:19

I still think you can't beat an Escort though - I always wanted a mk1 Escort but ended up with a mk2 as my first car (personal grail) ... where are all the black vinyl roof options these days?

Wow autoreverser, that looks awesome ... apart from the big label, who would have thought that would be all electric ... what are the performance specs ... range, acceleration, top speed ... but more importantly, how many D cells does it use, does it play tapes and how loud does it go? ;-)

tster - 2014-06-20 06:59

Woah sweet ride mate! This is what you travelled in in place of the Opel then? That is very very smart looking, has a hint of Aston Martin/Jaguar (ford era) about it!

Very sweet

My dad used to drive an old Morris Marina-said it handled like a shopping cart with a wonky wheel!

ken80s - 2014-06-22 06:38

It's time to go East! I actually owned 2 cars, my primary usage is the 1996 Japan spec Honda CRV. Recently have it converted to front wheel drive believe that I could get better mpg.

My second car was in fact a local made compact body car...the "Kenari" (english is Canary) named after the Canary bird. The body structure is based on the first and 2nd generation Daihatsu Move. This car was in fact my favourite car to drive around town, it's so swift and nimble to handle especially under heavy traffic!

the owner i bought it from said it was 305 but inside the hood the sticker says its a 350, and the engine is blue like it was in the late 70's. so i dont think no one changed the engine but how nows?

i have to open it inside to take the block number, but i will do it later on.

I also had a '72 2300 Ford Consul GT Coupe, '73 1.6 Ford Capri, '79 2.0 Ford Capri, '85 Renault 5 Alpine and 2 other Astra's

Interesting!

The 305 and 350 were always solid engines for GM. The other advantage is a ton of cheap replacement parts are available.

Watch for gum buildup on the Rochester carb. It may not be as bad as it was years ago now that they've refined the gas and added ethanol etc.

doity - 2014-10-10 00:14

I drive a 1988 Buick Reatta.  It was a low-production model, essentially hand built by GM.  Not too many of them sold because of the price and because the regular Buick buyer did not know what to think of it.  I like lots of lights and gimmickry so it is perfect for me!  I have added a few things to it like a Escort "Smart Mirror" which incorporates a GPS system and Bluetooth into the rear-view mirror.  It also has the backup camera installed that works in conjunction with the mirror.

The car does get a lot of looks from Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, drivers.  More of like a "What the heck is that" kind of look   I also have another oddball/rare model, a 1991 Volvo 780 Coupe.  In today's dollars this would be a 70k car but it is not worth a whole lot now, though it is a nice solid car that has been very dependable.  And I have a nice sound system in it.  Cassette based of course!

This was a rare gem indeed Luke. I'm assuming you have the 3800 V6 in her? If so that's one of GM's finest EVER! Just keep a look out for head gasket deterioration as the mileage creeps up. Replace it if you've not done so yet.

I had this engine in my Park Avenue years ago and nabbed 280,000 KM's before I sold it. I only sold it because my kids and their sporting equip. didn't fit.

This model also shared the floor with another very rare and low volume, two door, the Olds Toronado.

Well for me no more Evo's and just a boring reliable people mover that gets me from Point A to Point B. It's all paid for and THAT feels nice! It's a 99 Infiniti I30 with 175k miles on it (picked up with 160k) and I have done nothing but basic maint. and put gas in it. I wish it was a little more exciting but it's all good. Of course I still have my V6 powered El Camino. I don't plan on letting that one go. Here's an video of it in action out in the country a while back. I have about 16k miles on this drivetrain after the swap.

I know we European types do bang on about this, but I'm always interested by how very under-stressed the engines in American motors were then... 165BHP from a 3.8l V6 petrol.

My current car is a 1.6l diesel & it has 130BHP. It's 9years old, so not the latest eco-technology (but it still does 70mpg), & it's not some special tune-up job.

With US diesel prices (currently equivalent to about £0.62 per litre) my little Ford Focus would be seriously cheap to run.

Iso I believe it has to do with  emission standards and the "noise" factor. American designers thought to bring the cabin noise down vs all out unfettered power. Engineers purposely stifled and minimized the power band to provide "adequate" power and cabin noise was kept to a low grown. IMHO

This is why there is such a huge aftermarket of car performance chip makers and emission control equipment out there.

P.S. This little Buick 3.8L did have it's moment in the spotlight in 87' when Buick built the Grand National. Grandma's grocery getter hid it's turbocharged 3.8L under a black wrapper that netted 0-60 mph times of sub 5 seconds! Not bad for 1987!

Neither The Corvette, Lamborghini Countach could beat it's time! Not bad for a $20,000 car. See the link for the documentary on this car.

davelc2 - 2014-10-10 21:07

This is the drivetrain that is in my El Camino in the video a couple of posts up. Buick put their 3.8 Litre Turbo V6 in the Regal back in 1978 (only 150hp) and it didn't start making tire shredding power until 1984 but when the fitted it with an intercooler in 1986 and 1987 it was really cranking out some power. I fell in love with this car back in the 90's and bought my first 1987 Buick Grand National in 1995 6 months after attending the 4th annual Mustang vs Grand National shoot out in Englishtown, NJ. I had an 86 Regal T-type (same drivetrain) and as some of you know that car was stolen and recovered totaled. I purchased it back from the insurance and I picked up an 85 El Camino (seen in video above) and put the entire drivetrain in that from my T-type. It's a fun ride.

Dave, sorry to here about the Regal loss but having the 3.8L transplanted into the El Camino must be a thing of beauty!

Dave, just saying you own or owned a Grand National puts you in some exclusive company!

davelc2 - 2014-10-11 05:46

Thank you! There's a local club with a decent amount of members. They are getting ready to do a cruise but I won't be able to attend due to my new work schedule. Here's a shot just after the swap was complete. I'll have to fix the link at home. It doesn't seem to work.
