I remember back then people would say that these type of Cassettes would break because they are so thin and harm the Tape Deck.

Plus are 100 min. ok to play on tape Decks.

I would like to know are they bad for the Tape Deck motor due to the excessive tape?

I've heard that too Ford and I think that idea is a line of B.S. Ford. I think if the tape put too much strain on the motor the override slipper clutch on the cassette drive will slip if the load is too much and save the motor and the cassette That is what it is for this clutch has a predetermined torque value that the manufacturer sets from the factory.

I had never heard that before Ford.
I had only ever heard that they where more likely to stretch and ruin the quality of your recording.

I used to buy 120's every now and then... Overall, I didn't like 'em too much 'cause they'd break after awhile.

Just looked into the wiki, never thought that a 180´tape had exist.
But only for a very short time and very breakeable.

oh i yeah remember the 180 min tapes.. i use to back in the day try and make extended tapes by splicing in additional tape to a 60 min or 90 to make longer...lol...it was too heavy at times for it too spin... but for longivity and or valuable recordings on a tape i wouldn't go past a 90 min.to be safe .100 min id use for just misc recordings or speech....unless its necessary for some extended mixes..but thats it..tho i think they made some 110 tapes too...

Got a couple of BASF chrome 100 minute tapes kicking about from back in the early 90's, never a problem and pretty sweet sound from what I recall.

I guess major brand 120's would probably be ok but cheap & nasties are more likely to stretch.

Don't know if C120's are more prone to print-through or have lower density of oxide that would reduce sound quality or modulation level?

100 minutes is the max these days.

I've got a bunch of those... TDK MA110 metal bias cassettes... Pretty good sound from what I used to record on back in the early 90's. I can only imagine that they'd sound even better with the 3-head Sony deck I bought in the mid/late 90's.

My experience is that even 100's don't "weather" as well and are more susceptible to breaking.

I have some of those TDK Metal 110's too Mono, and they did sound good.

Yeah, Daiwa, I guess they were good 'cause I have lot more than I thought I did.

I was just lookin' thru my old tape collection... I found one of those 120 tapes, a Sony HF 120.

As for anything higher than a 120, I found nothing but remember buying something longer back in the days, maybe a 180. I do remember that it didn't last long 'cause after a few plays or whatever, it raveled up or popped and I had to throw it away. I told myself that I'd NEVER buy those again! It didn't sound too good either.

I just looked again at the wiki article... At one point, there was a 240 minute tape! Maybe that's what I had.

O.K. I guess it's fine to play them but what ashame because if you have some good mixes and that sucker breaks there goes the music.

We used them at the radio station in the 80's
for night programming.We never had trouble with these.I have to admit that they were used for 1 month only.
Nowadays everything is so easy , a PC with a HDD full of music and that is that. But the emotion in radio making is gone.

Hi Ford-Yes I have acouple of 120's and they have acouple of splices if you know what I mean!
I'm actually quite good at fixing cassettes and yes even 8 tacks!!
I have some 120's that are still great and yes I have some the TDK 110's they're great!!

C-100 became popular for recording a CD.
You could record one cd on each side.
C-90 were good for recording albums.
Sence the CD can play longer than a record album.

I buy and use 120 min cassettes and their fine never had one break

Monolithic, I know exactly what you're talking about!!! They weren't 180's though, they were 160's!!! And you were exactly right, after 1 or 2 plays, they were ready for the GARBAGE!!!

And me being the NUT that I am, would always try to salvage them by using editing tape. But it was no good. After a while, the poor cassette looked like it had been in a fight with 100 Band-Aids on it, and the cassette would no longer fit in the casing!!!

Believe it or not, the 160's were never on Name Brand Tapes, but the Generic Brands that you would buy at a No Name Electronic Shop or at a Dollar Store!!!

I bought some Maxell 120 minute tapes for radio time shifting, and got an easy hundred plays out of each with no breakage whatsoever. Only con is that thanks to thinner tape, they seemed more prone to stretching and the related dropouts. I can't fairly reccomend them because they ARE thinner, but I suspect other folks were using dollar store ones from way back.

I have a couple of Maxell 180 mins chrome tapes! I also have plenty of TDK MA110's and Maxell XL2 120 mins tapes and have received no problems with the TDK or the Maxells but have noticed recently i've had some problems with print-through on later Maxells. I have over 150-100 mins tapes and can report that i've not had any many problems apart from when i've played them in cheap cassette players. Plus,i make sure that that i only play my tapes,never rewind or fast forward them.

Only as a VHS video tape.
