I have heard of people hacking these things and making them create weird noises and bends...Anyone ever try this?

Speak & Maths? With an S? Must be a UK model. So cool.
There's a bunch of YouTubes with people who bend things like this. Also cool.

used to have one of them when i was like 5 or something. i also had the little professror, major minor, granstand mini arcade games etc, etc. i also had an amtrak- a big vehicle you programmed putting cards into its rump- that was my favourite and i remember my dad saying try not to break it as it cost a lot of money. at least i think it was called the amtrak. anyone else remember it?

E.T. hacked one of those Speak & Spells to "phone home"! Remember?
PHONES HOME
big cat to little cat
They were brought out to help kids learn in a cool way
there are different games and task to do
it has a cool voice (limp biscut used it in one of there songs and it sounds a bit like steven hawkings )
you had to spell the things it said or choose the right thing
lots of task's
but trying to spell out swear words and then being told "that was incorrect"
have a look here for what i mean
and now the sell to the music boys andgirls who bend and sample the voice
