good music never dies!

lav.loo - 2010-09-05 16:13

hi all, today i was playing a few cd,s i have in my collection, the EAGLES, ELO, and some VAN HALEN.
i like to listen to all kinds of music depending on my mood at the time, and today i chose these particular groups because i was in a rock mood Nod Yes
anyway after turning up my fave tunes on these albums to the max, i got to thinking how good they still sound even 30 yrs or more on.
my fave tracks on these albums are sweet talkin woman by ELO, why can,t this be love by VAN HALEN, and one of these nights by the EAGLES, these songs have deep meaning and sound awesome with proper musicians playing real instruments and putting their heart and soul into every bit of the songs.
anyway i got to thinking about todays crap music and i thought to myself i can,t imagine any of todays rubbish being played in another 30 yrs time No No
somewhere along the way good proper music has vanished into the dark just like good quality boxes did, is it me getting old or is music really s**t these days with no real meaning behind it as i see it.
i would rather have no music atall than have to listen to this new stuff if the choice had to be made.
im not saying every piece of todays music is crap, just 99% of it, it makes me wonder what music our children will look back on in 20/30 years time and what memories will they have to connect with this new stuff??
i think just like audio peaked in the 80,s 90,s so did music in the 70s/80s and from where im sat it does,nt look like the future has much to offer and makes me wonder where we are heading?
anyway hope i have,nt depressed anyone here with my crap Big Grin
i just wanted to express something here about music and thought this was the right place to do so, any contributions anyone Big Grin Wink

Hi LAV LOO it’s not just you getting old you are quite correct most of the music today leaves a lot to be desired.

I don’t think all the music today is bad, it’s just you really have to search hard to find anything decent.

When I do find something good to buy then I have the problem of it’s only available on download or CD only, not much fun for me as I’m all vinyl here. If I really like something and must have it, I buy it on CD and record it to tape using my Nakamichi from my friends Nagra CD player.

The last CD I bought was Angelique Kidjo, which was a bit of a disappointment not because the music was bad. It was disappointing because the CD was badly mastered, they pushed it way into the red it had no dynamic range. I’m use to music being wide, deep and having height in the sound stage. This music stayed firmly between the speakers, I felt I had wasted a TDK MA-XG. I could have just used TDK SA and still get the same result.

Anyway on what will our children look back on? I think like us they are beginning to discover old stuff like we did. They will look back to what we listened to like we look back to some of the stuff or parents listened to.

lav.loo - 2010-09-06 03:58

ye i think your right there COL, my kids love the music i play, which is mainly old skool stuff, apart from my 3 yr old girl who likes KATY PERRY and LADY GAGA Eek
i think i will have to ban MTV in my house Big Grin

toocool4 - 2010-09-06 04:08

Well at 3 she is allowed to like Perry and Gaga for now Wink, I'm sure she will see the errors of her way soon. Smile

lav.loo - 2010-09-06 09:38

i hope so because i think this new music is poisoning peoples heads especially kids, with all this sexualised stuff and gangsta rap, not good atall Wink

True. There's a lot of stuff out there that is really good, the challenge is discovering it now that FM radio is so predictable and 'yoof' oriented very few of the old specialist shows around now except for the pirates who are always a great source of new (and undiscovered old) music. I used to love the old local radio shows playing reggae, house, soul etc but sadly few and far between now. Not saying that the radio format for pop hits is bad and it has its place of course but I used to get a great buzz from radio listening in the 80s which sadly is pretty rare these days. I'm only grateful for the Internet and the way artists can gain exposure and fan bases a lot easier than they could back in the day.

lav.loo - 2010-09-06 10:39

davebush - 2010-09-06 12:27

yeah i remember stu...i went to an all nighter in picadilly and stu was playin quite hard core stuff....if i could describe it ...it was like a million bees buzzing around sorta mixed with the sound of a hoover.....not at all pleasant

lav.loo - 2010-09-06 12:29

Laugh Out Loud sounds good to me, well it may of done 15/20 yrs back Big Grin

toocool4 - 2010-09-06 13:53

Yes 2steppa you are correct British FM radio station is bad these days.

I’ll let you guys into the best kept secret out of Paris Fip, what is Fip only the best radio station I’ve hard in a long time. Since I’ve started to listen to this station I have spent a lot of money since I keep discovering new and old stuff.

I listen to this station everyday while at work, they play everything and you never know what is coming next.

You should all give it a try, you may all get hooked.

To find it goto www.radiofrance.fr then click on the Fip icon enjoy. Cool

lav.loo - 2010-09-06 14:01

i only listen to music on a box or a hifi COL, so nogood for me, i don,t like listening to music on a pc No No i don,t know why it,s just me i suppose Big Grin

toocool4 - 2010-09-06 14:15

i am just the same but while at work it's good for me, it's better than listening to cr*p British radio. Smile

lav.loo - 2010-09-06 15:19

hey their not all bad No No depends on your taste in music i suppose, over the years we have had some great radio dj,s here in the uk,there was a particular dj here in manchester on key103 fm called steve penk a few years back, and he used to phone people up and wind them up for a laugh and after finally getting them all worked up with his wind up, he would tell them who he was, it was all good fun and great to listen too.
that aside, i think the best stations now are on AM here in the uk, but still on fm on some stations they play old stuff, lots of 80,s music, they have certain hours on different days where they play nothing but 70,s 80,s stuff, so it,s not all bad No No
would you say french stations are better?? Wink

toocool4 - 2010-09-06 16:08

I don’t know, but Fip is better then anything I’ve heard in the UK in a long time.

The diversity of Fip is amazing, I mean they literally play everything.

walkgirl - 2010-09-07 09:32

Van Halen is the best! Cool

lav.loo - 2010-09-07 10:58

sorry walk girl, VAN HALEN is good, but not the best No No
there are many rock groups out there, or was should i say, mainly ENGLISH and AMERICAN rock bands that was better than VAN HALEN, but he is very good Wink

walkgirl - 2010-09-07 11:12

Confused

For me Van Halen is the best, also because they are originally form Holland!! Cool

lav.loo - 2010-09-07 11:17

toocool4 - 2010-09-07 14:30

I can’t believe I actually bought 1 or 2 of 2 Unlimited’s singles, well I saw the errors of my ways quickly.

litfan - 2010-09-07 15:03

Katy perry`s last album "one of the boy`s", is actually quite good. Her new one is pants. "Waking up in vegas" is a good song. I am slowly updating my 80`s AOR vinyl collection into cd. I have got a lot, but, some, are that obscure, they will never come out on cd. Retrospect records do a great job.

torres - 2010-09-08 03:20

Don't forget Teach in Big Grin

toocool4 - 2010-09-08 03:48

I think this one is before my time, I don’t know who they are.

Walkgirl knows (perhaps) Big Grin

litfan - 2010-09-08 08:11

ao - 2010-09-08 08:37

OK, I'll give you that one Smile

litfan - 2010-09-08 08:44

Thanks cris. Best not to argue with a brain damaged individual Wink.

mellymelsr - 2010-09-08 09:35

My favorite music comes from the late 70's to most of the 80's when real bands played there own music. Todays stuff is overprocessed computer programmed junk. My musical tastes include r&b, jazz, soft rock, funk, and electronic funk. I also listen to 80's rap, the clean stuff, before it turned into the vile stuff it has become that is void of any creativity. They don't even bother to create an original beat, they just sample an 80's track and start slinging F-bombs. Although I do sometimes listen to the new stuff when I need a good laugh.

billy.the.binman - 2010-09-08 10:38

we have fip on at work, they are very diverse.

i listen to absolute radio at home on mw, its pretty good and diverse but in a more mainstream way than fip! not so avant garde

good speech MELLY good taste in music too Nod Yes

davebush - 2010-09-08 23:06

to honest ..i like and listen to anything from ABC to ZZ TOP .......and when im listening i always think about how it was made you know like the production and instruments and the arrangements etc...things like what has actually gone into making this music......i think if i had my time again i would defo love to have been a sound engineer or on the production side of things.......i do use that mixmeister fusion software program for mixing tracks together......and it works for all music....iv mixed pet shop boys with chic and stuff like that......its a fab program.... Smile

lav.loo - 2010-09-10 11:20

sounds good DAVE doing your own mixes and stuff.
i think if i had my time again i would be a musician of some sort, probably playing the synthesizer, i love early 80,s synth pop Nod Yes Wink

Hi LAV LOO do you mean people / groups like Gary Numan / Human League? Cool

lav.loo - 2010-09-10 12:10

hi TC4, yes that kind of stuff, and DEPECHE MODE are a good example too, groups that used a lot of heavy synth Wink

toocool4 - 2010-09-10 12:25

Looking at the German's did you like Kraftwerk? Cool

lav.loo - 2010-09-10 12:57

yes i think KRAFTWERK was without a doubt one of the best synth pop acts, but i never really got into their music because i found it a bit too dull, i prefered the more energetic sound that was coming from the likes of depeche mode, especially the song I JUST CAN,T GET ENOUGH, brilliant Big Grin
but it,s all about personal choice and nothing more Wink
