Nice vid! I believe I postd elswhere during an air show thread that the Russians, yes Russians, actually build the Ferrari's of aircraft. They rely less on technology and more on pilot skills. That's why the Sukhoi's Su-27 through 37/47 are the best (IMHO) maneuvering aircraft in the world. If you get to see one at an airshow... Eek!!! Big Grin

charlesdickens - 2008-04-30 17:36

I want one!

Ill trade an m90 for one but ned can fly it, you wouldnt catch me in the cock pit. Smile

ned.209 - 2008-04-30 17:49

mmm. the raptop may be the cutting edge but it sure aint much to look at. i dunno have any of ye seen the robotech manga, or was it macross... anyways, i seen one, and the robots/planes were shaped like the one above. i thought to myself, thats odd, the wings...

then i came across that photo this evening, i was aghast! its a real aircraft! i just stared at it for ages. its lovely!

vladi123456 - 2008-04-30 18:11

Ya, MIGs are cool. One of the things the Russians can do the best is the weapons....

thafuzz - 2008-04-30 18:39

It's a wicked looking aircraft. It looks menacing. Funny thing is, all the money spent on that research and developement and they couldn't afford to pay their monthly (Kyrgyz) electric bill to operate their rented base just 30 miles from our base. Their base' electric was turned off cause they couldn't pay that month. Confused

That first shot is wild Ned, weird how the wings sweep forward... I got buzzed by one of these on my hike a few years ago:

...F-86 Sabre, the first swept wing fighter. Had a ten to one kill ratio over the MiG in the Korean war. The pilot was obviously an X Korean War pilot, he snapped that thing on it's side as he buzzed me at about 50 yards, then flew off into the Rockies! Talk about pumped!

BS perhaps, but the F-86 was overall the most successful air to air fighter jet in the world from 1949 until well into the mid 1960's. Given the rapid advances in MIG design and production during that period, that stands as quite an accomplishment.

ned.209 - 2008-05-01 16:43

here check it i found another sweeet shot of it

r.o.y.a.l - 2008-05-01 16:48

OK Metad, you may be right, but it ain't my BS. Probably post war American Propaganda... I read the following paragraph while looking for a cool photo:

By the end of hostilities, F-86 pilots were credited to have shot down 792 MiGs for a loss of only 78 Sabres, a victory ratio of 10 to 1.

Then, I found the rest of the story at WilkP:

Postwar totals officially credited by the USAF are 379 kills for 103 Sabres lost, amounting to a ratio of nearly 4 to 1. Modern research by Dorr, Lake and Thompson has claimed the actual ratio is closer to 2 to 1.

The Soviet claims of downing over 600 Sabres together with the Chinese claims are considered exaggerated by the USAF. Recent USAF records show that 224 F-86s were lost to all causes, including non-combat losses. But direct comparison of Sabre and MiG losses seem irrelevant, since primary targets for MiGs were heavy B-29 bombers and ground-attack aircraft, while the primary targets for Sabres were MiG-15s.

Of the 40 USAF pilots to earn the designation of ace during the Korean war, all but one flew the F-86 Sabre.

More than 6,000 F-86s were manufactured by North American's Los Angeles and Columbus, Ohio, divisions. The first swept-wing airplane in the U.S. fighter inventory, the F-86 scored consistent victories over Russian-built MiG fighters during the Korean War. Maximum Speed at Seal Level: 707 mph, Ceiling: 54,600 ft., Range: 835miles, Armament: 24 69.9-mm (2.75-inch) air-to-air rockets F-86 Facts

In defense of your MiG Metad:

With the introduction of the Soviet Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 into air combat in November 1950,

...which out-performed all aircraft then assigned to the United Nations, three squadrons of F-86s were rushed to the Far East in December. The F-86 could out-turn and out-dive the MiG-15, but the MiG-15 was superior to the F-86 in ceiling, acceleration, rate of climb, and zoom (especially until the introduction of the F-86F in 1953)

Still...

pointy planes are better Big Grin
