Thanks very kindly everyone. This IS the coolest feature on any deck I've used, Unidirectional tape flipping. Man, that door pops open, and it whips around so fast, and snaps shut, if you don't pay attention, you won't see it!
Yeah, well it's even MORE like a museum over here now U.E.

The Nak is an awsome deck! But that Luxamn looks pretty cool lit up!
very nice dave ,yeah that luxman equipment is great stuff too .my luxman reciever wieghs about 50 pounds ,can't get over how sweet that nakinmichi is ,way cool.
Houston we have an addition ready to go throttle up!!
Nice one daiwa!
Thanks guys... Yeah, that Luxman is the bomb, real eyecandy at night! In fact, the buttons look like candy. But this deck has been in my main record slot for nearly a year, while I've been futsing with my big Tandberg 3014. The Lux is so sonically superior to almost any deck I've used, I never quite gave Lux their due until I bought this one.
It will be a hard decision as to which deck will land in the top slot. The Tandberg is so solid, and the layout on that deck is superior to any deck I've used. It's hard to argue that the 3014 is not one of the best decks ever made. BUT, after another evening of running the new Nak RX-505, I can say that the quality is stunning. This thing is nearly as bullet proof as the Tandberg.
I wish all my decisions were this much fun!
Here's a bit more of the eyecandy, the RX-102 and the Nakamichi LX-5! Both, highly recommended.

That Nak, that's the "Dragon" model I believe.
Sweet deck.
Pan
Well, it's actually very similar to the Dragon, but the Dragon first hit the scene in 1982, Manufacturers' Suggested Retail Price, A Whopping $2499. That was a big chunk o' change in 82! The RX-505 came out in 84, MSRP was $1549.
Both units stopped production in 1993. They shared many parts, and that's why they look similar, Xcept for the tape transport system, the Unidirectional flipping, is only on three of the Naks' decks. The Dragon did not have an auto reverse option and the controls on the Dragon are on the right side of the unit with more manual calibrations, bias, azimuth and test tones.
damn daiwa i have that same luxman amp with the servo face plate.what a heavy monster.
Great 505 Dave, I made my friend buy one of these and he loves it!The Dragon does have auto reverse, but its a different system for doing it...My Tandberg is back in the shop as well, one channel will not record, but I broke out my Nak CR-7A and my Revox...Loving them both right now!
Floyd
Much of the Luxman gear is quite advanced, very heavy, very good build quality. My servo face, despite replacing the belt, as you'll see on most of these decks, is no longer working. Was a bit of a "silly" feature anyway. Does yours "suck"?
James
Yes, you are right, the Dragon does have auto reverse. It's the conventional type that reverses direction of the tape.
Dragon Transport
* Pressure pad lifter
* Dual-Capstan Transport
* Auto Reverse * Slack-Tape Takeup
* Direct Drive
* 2-Speed Cueing
* Mechanical Tape Loading
* Auto Shutoff (Full)
* Double Direct Drive
Companies like Nakamichi and Tandberg had already built their rep in setting the stage for cassette technology, Nakamichi was looking for a new angle they could sell. The science behind "turning the tape and not the direction" may, to some, seem as "campy" as the "suckface" servo Luxman. But it makes sense to have a consistent tape path and Nak really promoted the Uni-directional feature.
The CR-7A is considered one of the top decks ever. And the Revox (B215 or B710?) are THE decks consistently sighted as the best build quality and best overall decks ever made.
Oh, by the way, just finished two mixes to send you. Just gotta finish the covers and playlists!
Dave,
i do own a B710 myselfe and did compare it to some of my other decks, a Denon DRM-800, Akai GX-75, Nak LX-5 and some Sony, Kenwood, Uher etc., it beats most of'em but the LX-5 and the RX-505 have definitively better sound. yep, the Revox is solid as a rock, but i love my Naks better...
That's no surprise Auto. We both have the Nak bug. The more recording I do with the 505, the more I love it!
Akai does have some really cool old decks.
