Ok.I know and heard all the negative talk about Windows Vista. However I was getting fed up with the 3 to 5 time of year XP crashes.
I said to myself "self you have nothing to loose give it a try"I did and have been amazed at the performance. It takes a few days to get familiar with the layout but so far so good. All my programs work just fine including MS Office 2003 Pro with no issues.I'm glad I took the plunge and realized alot of the negative talk was just that.
I upgraded my system totally.
New MB, New processor,new ddr 2 800mhz,new HD's.
Will post some spare parts in sale column for anyone interested.
So I have to ask..... with all those upgrades..... why didn't you just get a new computer?
he likes to DIY maybe?
Yes Indeed I build my own systems with lots of power.I use the best of the best from each Manufacturer and build a system that is top of the line.
Just a heads up.Parts are now posted on sale section. They are free just actual shipping
I do my own hardware upgrades from time to time... but I have never built a whole computer. Those that do seem to "because they can" if for no other reason.
It does sound like a fun project and you really get know your computer from the ground up though...
In my case I have the time.
Your right! When you build your own you know it from the ground up.Plus you can pick and choose the best parts. When you buy a factory built computer there are alot of cheap parts thrown in.

Nelsongf9696, I bought only one custom built computer (my first) but since then I've built all of my computers and took great pleasure and pride in it. The fact that I knew what parts went in to it has always given a performance per dollar pay off since I spent more money where I knew I needed to. I was also able to research the parts which made me confident of my selections.
MAC.......

So now we know part of what's wrong with you Sinister.
I work in the PC industry so it's not really practical for me to use a MAC at home but there are some nice pluses to a MAC.

you dont even know the half of it.
Don That's why I do it...Been building my own since about 2002 NO problems.Even built one to run Ubuntu Linux but software issues made me revert to Windows.

I run Windows..... from within a Xen Window under Linux.
MAC's are nice, kind of like Chia Pet Computers for those "creative types"..... LOL
I have one Gateway Tower PC with dual 18" LCD monitors, a Sony Tower with a 15" LCD, a 15" Gateway laptop...
AND a 15" Macbook Pro running Windows XP in Parallels. That is the best of both worlds let me tell you...
BTW I love that cartoon... so true!!!
I'm a Windows & PC fan myself. I used to work for a parts wholesaler and learned how to make PC's then. I even used to make PCs, list them in the paper, and sell them for a profit. Paid my bills that way for a while. That's been a good 14 years ago now, during the end of the Windows 3.1 years!!!
Now, I have two computers in my house that I built from scratch... Hey, if you can... why not? And when you can pick the best parts for the job, you are getting exactly what you want.
My primary home system is a 2.4 GHZ dual core AMD with a sweet video card and a 22" monitor. I use that for lots of photo editing and general computing. Even the occasional driving game (I love GT2, really fun with a steering wheel and foot pedals)
The other machine is a 2.6 GHZ AMD single core that is basically my DJ Booth computer. That one is a bit more simple, but has an upgraded Soundblaster audio card. I use that one to run Rane Serato when I am playing records (well, MP3s via vinyl). I also use that PC to record my vinyl to the computer and convert to MP3s.
I was not afraid to upgrade my laptop, too. The machine I am typing on right now is an older Compaq v2000 notebook PC. It came with a crappy 1.8 ghz AMD Sempron CPU. I put in the top-of-the-line 2.2 GHz Athlon 64 (max I could put on this motherboard) and a new hard drive and upped the RAM to 2GB. All in all, I spent under $200 to upgrade this laptop and extended its life considerably. I've had it for going on four years now.
I still haven't upgraded to Vista on any of these machines because XP (on all three PCs) is running rock solid. I haven't had a computer lock up on me in over a year.
Incidentally, my wife has an iMAC... one of the ones that looks like a big ball with a monitor arm sticking out of the top, and that computer does seem to run pretty good and she uses it alot. But, it locks up more than my PCs. (I'm sure that will generate come comments from the MAC users).
I can't believe we have four computers in the house that are "personal."
Add to that, I have my work laptop.
Five freakin' computers in the house! Excessive, I know!!!

Vista is fine..... as long as you are using a relatively new computer with at 2 gigs of memory and a dedicated video card. It even runs ok on my laptop, 1.86ghz Core Duo with 2 gigs and Intel onboard video.
Very stable for me.
Since we closed our office 18 months ago I sold off our desktop hardware, which was really just geared for business use anyway, and with us having planned to move to the mountains we stuck with laptops at home to keep it simple. Like Jt we run 4...The Fujitsu 17" Lifebook N6220, a little dated now but a MCE model with remote and now with a yellow line is the media center (200GB onboard and 500GB external for TV & movies).
I use a Lifebook N6210 (non-MCE model) for a desktop replacement with an ALTO desktop set-up.
Betty has a little elcheapo 14" Gateway with Vista, she likes it for its longlife battery and lightness, and I have my beloved Acer Aspire 2000, with 2GB Ram keeps me happy and its still one of the best looking laptops around, going on 5 years old..
We run all wireless with an extended range Linksys G router.
My Acer:
...and I was going to upgrade to Vista but you'all talked me out of it. I'm glad you guys did.
I like PCs because they are cheap.
No scrub that. I like PCs because they are
free.
I work in IT & know lots of people who are upgrading every 5 minutes & so I snap up their cast-offs.
I've got quite good at it.
Our current PC is a Sony VAIO PCG-V505CP with docking station that retailed at well over £1000.
...it's 5 years old now. 5 years old? Windows 98 is it? Nope. It runs XP on a 1.86GHz Intel processor, 1GB RAM, DVD, 40GB HDD & wireless broadband.
It's tiny & my wife adores the blue/grey metallic colour (same colour as Robocop
)
It's docked into a nice 19" flat screen.
Price paid for all of it?
Not a sausage.
Strangely, I did pay for the speakers for it
So, to paraphrase the
advert: "I'm skint, & I'm a PC..."
Vista:
I use it on my work laptop & I like it. I'm slowly forgetting where everything is & relying on the Search function (so God help me when it all goes wrong).
My work laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6400 - dual core 1.8GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 120GB HDD, 15" widescreen, DVD rewriter. Not that special, apart from the price...
It was
£299 + tax.
That's why people love PCs.
Same reason VHS won the video war.
Cheaper!
gtastuntcrew302 - 2008-12-16 04:31
well you have 4gb of ram and a decent video card and even a duel core processor sounds like it should run vista just fine.. GOD WHENEVER VISTA COMES OUT WITH SOME SERVICE PACKS THAN IT WILL BE ALL GOOD
Vista is great i have had vista for a few weeks, mind you i have 8 gig ram and 2 decent video cards.
wait for windows 7 it should work out a ton better than vista
