I wouldn't be surprised if Circuit City went under sometime in the near future - not that I want that to happen!
jaredscottfla - 2008-11-14 23:56
The store a mile from me allready closed, best buy killed them.
never shopped at circuit city before but if they are as expensive as best buy they are in trouble.

Interesting... I never saw them as "expensive" 'cause I mainly used to buy CD's from there up until about 3 years ago - now I download 95% of my music and if I wanted a CD, I'd buy it online. Their CD's are nowhere near the ridiculous prices of F.Y.E. tho!
As for their other stuff, I always thought they had pretty fair prices. Still, if you want a better deal, buying from somebody else online is always the way to go.
Because of the internet, I haven't been a regular shopper of Circuit City for years.

I'm not surprised by that in some ways... I don't know how widespread these stores were, but we used to have
Silo and
Wall To Wall Sound and Video a.k.a. The Wall. Circuit City came along and knocked both of those chains out the box in the early 90's!
We didn't have Best Buy stores in Philly until about 5 to 10 years ago (I forget when they got here). Now I guess it's time for Best Buy to knock Circuit City out the box.
Actually bought a Panasonic RX-CS or CT from them in Early 90's. Have loathed to go back in though I did have a remote starter installed in my truck by these clowns...what a joke...treat you like they wanted to go out of business.
I name them elcrappo city.
Yes I agree with Ed,I was never impressed with Circuit City's service or their prices.......
When Circuit City started out the objective was to take the cozy experience of the home audio store to the masses. As with anything related to this concept it wears it's welcome out over time as it gets diluted by greed.
I mean think about it, is P.F. Changs like your locally owned true Chinese restraunt or does it "feel" like the rest of the chain resteraunts?
What has happened is that knowledgable salesmen who earned a healthy commision were killed off by cheapened products and greedy corporate officers. The customer was put on the back burner for profits. Now you had stores getting outdated with poor customer service. They also tried to be all things to all people. I remember when you went to an appliance store for a washer and dryer, NOT Circuit City. For a computer, you went to a computer store, NOT Circuit City.
The problem hasn't changed with newer competition. Best Buy is no different customer service wise or knowledgable staff. But, what they do is be the Wal-Mart of electronics. For example, do you notice that they give away a lot of gift gift cards and Best Buy points?
I bought a refrigerator from them, an open box floor display at that. That got me $500 off. It came with a $400 gift card. I used it to buy a open box hard drive camcorder, that came with...a $250 gift card, bought a camera, that came with, you guessed it, a $100 gift card. By the time I was done I had bought nearly three thousand dollars worth of stuff for one refrigerator. It's all how they work the books so inventory and cash keep flowing. Best Buy gets so much stuff in bulk it's unreal. Circuit City was and is still in the stone ages because they never changed or adapted their model.
Best Buy also carries a lot of volume movers. In other words they have some cheap stuff in there but not so much that you "feel" like your in a second rate store. Plus their online system is a lot slicker than Circuit City could hope to be. Their marketing machine also trumps Circuit City's.
I really hate to see Circuit City in this kind of trouble. It was like a candy store to me growing up. Sad.
But...Best Buy better watch their backs...you know you can buy a Dell at Wal-Mart now, and a deal with Apple (The Mac) is supposed to be in the works. The good part about all of this is that we may see the return everywhere of the pure audio specialty store.
And it's bad enough that the majority of their salespeople don't know anything about the products they sell. These days, they grab any kid off the street and put 'em in a red shirt.
i quit going into best buy. the customer service is a joke. you stand there for 10 minutes while the stupid employees try and find the right person to answer your question. they probably aren't too far behind circuit city
Circuit City has always been weaksauce. Their selection sucks compared to Best Buy.

I guess it's official...
you're one of them now!
Circuit city. Sound like the inside of a pioneer sk909.
The best electronics stores in the world are J&R (NYC), and Fry's (mostly west coast)
masterblaster84 - 2008-11-16 11:10
Reli's right, Fry's smokes Circuit City (and Best Buy). I'm in my local Fry's more than Best Buy, Circuit City and the rest combined.
I've always liked and had good experiences with Crutchfield.
They have this on their web site:
Our valued customers,
The international financial crisis is weighing heavily on all of us. As consumers, one factor that we all need to consider is the stability of the companies with whom we do business. In the current economic climate, many retailers will stumble and some will even fail. For that reason, I personally want to explain Crutchfield’s unique situation.
For many years, I have been concerned about the growing credit bubble. It was obvious to me that it was unsustainable and that an inevitable day of reckoning would come. To protect our customers, our employees, and my family from the disastrous consequences of a financial meltdown, I positioned Crutchfield to withstand the worst. We became very frugal with how we spent money. We did not pay outlandish executive salaries and bonuses. We did not build fancy facilities. We did not expand our retail store operations. And we did not buy other companies. Instead, we worked extremely hard to improve how we serve our customers, while we managed every aspect of our business with excellence. Furthermore, we paid off all of our debt and accumulated cash reserves.
When shopping in times like these, you need to be certain that the retailer will be around to provide you with years of after-the-sale support. We know that you expect guarantees, warranties and promises of lifetime product support to be kept when you purchase with us – and I have positioned our company to deliver without compromise on all of these important elements. As retailers go, Crutchfield is a “Rock of Gibraltar.” We have no debt, a perfect credit rating and a legacy of fiscal prudence. Therefore, we will be around to serve you as we have served millions of customers for the past 34 years and throughout the last four recessions.
Purchasing from Crutchfield today means you are choosing a company that will help you use and enjoy your purchase now and in the future. I hope that you’ll give Crutchfield a chance to exceed your expectations. I thank you for your time and, most importantly, for doing business with Crutchfield.
Bill Crutchfield
Crutchfield is great! I haven't bought anything from them in years - 'cause I basically bought everything I need to buy as far audio gear is concerned - but my entire stereo system (with the exception of a Music Hall turntable and Paradigm speakers) came from Crutchfield.

Crutchfield is a great company, I've enjoyed their catalogs and a few purchases over the last few decades.

Vladi, I'm older than I care to be already but I have a lot of booming left in me.
Don, I'm also a lot older than I like to be, but what are you gonna do. Although I hear that drinking blood of young virgins usually helps
masterblaster84 - 2008-11-17 14:53

Sad Story The Orig Owner of Ce's was indicted For Fraud and embezelment,They sold all the stores to the wiz and He ran away to Israel Rather then face the Music. Israel Would Not extradite him,(he had Dual Citzenship)and he was tried there and wound up in an israeli prison,i think he is still there as the usa has him on the do not fly list as he was convicted in Ny in Absencia,Caused alot of Uproar Diplomatically Between The Us and Israel.
I think if he trues to come back to The Us,He'll get busted at the airport and taken to jail!
