Frown passed away today at 87.
I remember his emmy winning coverage at the 72 olympics covering the israeli hostages, and all those yrs of abc wide world of sports! He'll be missed...

His presence, along with his voice, was simply classic. Cool

jvc.floyd - 2008-06-07 19:25

wasnt he the guy on the wide world of sports who said the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat?

jaredscottfla - 2008-06-07 19:33

SmileYep
That was Jim Mckay

jaredscottfla - 2008-06-07 19:36

SmileHe also was the studio anchor on Al Michaels" do u Believe in Miracles" Call at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics.
Olympics,Horse Racing,Battle of The Network Stars(Anyone Remember That?) But Wide World and The Israeli Hostage crises at The Munich Olympics are what He'll be Best Remembered For.

cool i liked that guy he was old skool for sure .i loved the old wide world of sports especially the opening part where the skier was tumbling down the hill head over heels ,that was my favorite part.,

skippy1969 - 2008-06-07 22:10

It think he used to do Timex watch commercials too, did'nt he

jaredscottfla - 2008-06-07 22:13

SmileYes in the 80's The primary Pitchman in the 70's for timex, was the Late Howard K Smith,The former anchorman of abc news.

oldskool69 - 2008-06-07 22:15

He did do the Timex commercials. There aren't 'casters like him and Cosell anymore. Frown It's all about keeping up with ESPN and coming up with punchlines and trying to find the most sensational story on an issue that ultimately doesn't matter. (Patriots?) Roll Eyes

masterblaster84 - 2008-06-09 15:29

Yes he will be missed. Frown

He was a big part of an era where there was more content and less show to sports broadcasting. I can hear him now almost as clear as the days he was announcing.

"The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat"
Classic. Grew up with his announcing, especially Wide World of Sports. J. McKay, RIP
