MiniDisc... Not being a media that was well used

bredgeo - 2011-09-10 13:24

Who still (or ever did) use minidiscs????

I know that it was more used in Asia. It was not long after the commercialisation of MDs that solid state (or more known as the MP3 players) came along... So the MD media never really developed in Europe or the Americas.

But, any of you use/still use MDs?

walkgirl - 2011-09-10 13:35

I use md alot, I like is very alot

bredgeo - 2011-09-10 13:42

davebush - 2011-09-10 13:44

bredgeo - 2011-09-10 14:01

I have 9 (icluding one fixed in a GF 9595, 1 in a GF 9191 and one in a GF 303)... Now, who is crazy, right?

davebush - 2011-09-10 14:08

bredgeo - 2011-09-10 14:16

Ahhhhh..... You win!!!!!

radio.raheem - 2011-09-10 16:23

Never liked md...tried a few very expensive portable players....they sounded awful...just as bad as most mp3 players...so i never bought one....im sure the stand alone players fair much better than the portable ones though...

ghettoman - 2011-09-10 18:36

yep i've had 2 mini disk players, one was a philips which was ok,and i had a pioneer one,now that one was real nice !! but i sold it,and i've fixed a couple of portable mini disk walkmans for friends too, not an enjoyable experience but i got them working..

retro - 2011-09-10 20:10

I still have my Sony MZ-R500 I purchased back in 2000 which was used to record underground radio shows in MDLP mode. The sound was nothing special, but It was a much cheaper alternative to DAT for me at the time.

walkgirl - 2011-09-10 21:27

I have a sony mz-r30 since 1997 and a sony mz-e30 from 1998

both still 100% working and complete with the box and even the battery from the

r30 is okay!!

I did buy them when I still had money and lived at home

now I have no money at all

oh yes, and numerous disks of course also some prerecordet ones fro Wham

and celine dion from titanic and stuff

walkgirl - 2011-09-10 21:31

Oh yes, and a old sony mdx-100rds in my even older car

which is not working at the moment ( past 7 years or so)

with remote controll

bredgeo - 2011-09-11 03:20

Nicole, Yes! We have our car radio as an MD player as well (but ours work)!!!!!

If not, seeing some pics... Here are mine... ... including the parts ones on the left cushion.

bredgeo - 2011-09-11 03:37

Oh, and the MDs:

Most all of them are my LPs that I recorded onto MD and still listen to them quite often. It keeps the vinyl cracking noise... I like them for they are correctly compressed (to me) the 20 to 20000 Hz (the normal human hearing spectrum) is okay for me!

But, I do have to admit... the solid sate media that now has big sizes and were we can put formats like flac (as 'Lossless'), I LIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gonna remake a Bbox SolidSate player (like the GF 9494 MP3 player I made a good few years back -like an ass, I sold it for peanuts)... And we will see!

bison - 2011-09-13 13:19

i had a pioneer md head unit in my car bout 15 years ago,at the time i thought it was the buisiness!

billy.the.binman - 2011-09-13 15:00

i love md, was an advocate of them for long time.  i still use a portable md instead of mp3.  i like my music media to be tangible.

plissken - 2011-09-14 04:19

I own two Sony portables: MZ-R91 and MZ-RH1.

In 2000 I switched from tape to MD because tape walkmans were and still are quite difficult to manage on the go, especially at the gym. I love tape walkmans but I always have to carry a cleaning kit and use it every 2 or 3 cassettes.

MD has no such issues. I've used a Sony MD lens cleaner about 10 times in 11 years. Sound quality is superb and much better than current MP3 players. In fact, unlike current MP3 players, top Sony MD portables were built using the best components.

My current setup for digital recording using a compression algorhythm is still:

Sony D-EJ725 (portable cd player) to Sony MZ-R91;

Cables: Sony POC-5B (optical cable) + Sony RK-TXT1 (cable for Joint text CD-MD).

ATRAC is far more convenient than MP3 for walkman use. Superb sound, no audible artifacts, long battery life.

I haven't used the MZ-RH1 to full specs yet.

bredgeo - 2011-09-14 04:29

Hummmm.... A lover! Cool!

I totally agree with the you, sound is GREAT!

bredgeo - 2011-09-14 04:30

James Craven Pierce... Question.

Will you ever open your MZ?

plissken - 2011-09-14 16:10

Just two pictures about my current setup for ATRAC digital recording, as explained in my previous post. ATRAC compressed audio and CD Text info recorded onto a standard minidisc using Koss PortaPros to monitor rec level.

When recording, both walkmans are mains powered (Sony AC-E30HG and AC-E45HG). The cd player G-protection is off.

Eleven years on, I still haven't found one single audible difference between CDs and ATRAC encoded minidiscs. Current MP3 players won't stand a chance.
