Apart from not putting it on the label to say it contains horse meat, I don’t see what the big deal is?

In France they eat horses, in India they don’t eat cow and in China they eat dogs. So what I am trying to say is its all meat.

If it was not fit for human consumption that would be a different matter.

It IS against the law.

If the pack describes the contents as 100% beef, it can only contain seasoning and beef. That 'beef' can be anything from steak, butt cheeks or gonads but can only be from a cow. Wherever the stuff is made or packed, it does not matter; the person who is ultimately responsible for selling that item in the UK can be prosecuted and the fines can be huge, prison is also a strong possibility if it is proven to not be as described.

the best beef to eat is grass fed beef...which is not easy to find...

your posts are always thought provoking toocool4 & this is no exception. i'll stick to what i highlighted, as it goes without saying that Glen's post is about the dishonesty of beefburger stores which don't sell what they advertise.

1. eating/not eating meat is the biggest of all food-related topics. i won't enter it, it's too complex. yet,

2. if you are not vegetarian, the question of what meat you eat is culturally relevant. we have food taboos even if we are not vegetarians. two examples: would you eat insects? human beings? i mean, for real.

3. once i was offered a delicious dish; only afterwards they told me it was horsemeat. as i soon as i knew it, i started throwing up...  yet i can tell you the dish was absolutely delicious!

4. on the point of food taboos, i recommend Marvin Harris's Good to Eat: Riddles of Food and Culture (1998) - even if i disagree with the author's conclusions.

PS. in addition to horses, in certain areas of my country people also love eating --believe it or not-- cats! thanks goodness, so far nobody has offered me any!

I will and have tried most things once and yes including insects while out in Thailand, but could never eat a human being that is just too far.

Food scandals happen everywhere in the western world.

They just put profits above people and thats simply it!

The multinationals just dont care and exploit people,

they even manipulate their tastes with food colouring

and artificial food seasonings (How can a potato chip smell like salt and vinegar?

or bacon?)

I can recall a scandal with  olive oil that hapenned here

they mixed cottonseed oil and refined other unknown oils

they did add some green food colouring with

olive oil and they passed it to the people as

Extra Virgin Olive Oil !!!!

This will be forgotten in a few weeks and everybody will

the original carpaccio by cipriani, from the famous harry's bar in venice, is with beef. but i wouldn't be surprised if dishonest chefs use other kind of meat. during the golden age of boombox here we had a scandal with wine, it was adulterated with methanol and some people died because of it. today i read on the paper that a certain number of restaurants in palermo kept their food in biohazard conditions. adulteration is getting global because of greediness and irresponsibility, as you have already pointed out
