Site Upgrade!

stereo2go - 2011-02-07 19:23

Well, the upgrade was successful!  I can see folks are getting in successfully too.  Just some highlights on the changes and cool updates:

  1. Attachments are working.
  2. The message area is improved for more customization.
  3. PMs are now called Dialogs.
  4. Tags are now included to improve search capability.
  5. There is a special area of the site called "Clips".  This will be a holding area for images, video and audio.
  6. A new Blog area.
  7. And the user interface is definitely more modern.
I know the change might be a little overwhelming at first.  Many of us became comfortable on the previous site after 6+ years.

kittmaster - 2011-02-07 19:40

Looks fresh, hopefully it stays functional.  Well done

bredgeo - 2011-02-07 21:56

Hummmm...... Gonna have to get use to the new lay-out.

Cannot say if it is good or not yet (that is, "user Friendly")

Hummmmmmmmmm

radio.raheem - 2011-02-07 22:01

This will take some getting used to for me guys...but hey i have the user name iI have always wanted now..

bredgeo - 2011-02-07 22:25

Is there a suggestion area (I have not really looked yet)... But, if there is... Link it!

l.lopez - 2011-02-07 22:57

WOW is gonna be a little getting use to but hey is Stereo2Go.
I wonder if there is an option for themembers to change the looks
if they like. Dont get me wrong I like it especially that chrome cap
boombox on top but I'll miss the original look of it that's for sure.

fatdog - 2011-02-07 23:19

Will the "Search" function be brought back?

I guess the old S2G theme at Boomboxery is a bit outdated now.  :-)

Editing your post doubles the number of carriage returns ("Enter") for me...

beatlesfire - 2011-02-07 23:37

Have the same question about "Search"/

I can't find none of my posts and pictures from the past.
Anyway site looks good, I have to learn how to use it again.

redbenjoe - 2011-02-07 23:50

like the new 'recent activity' list --
but it seems to be on a random time order --
would like to see it by most recent ..first

and --at least for this first day -
i miss the old s2g

walkgirl - 2011-02-08 00:59

The chocolate dispenser does not work at this time also not yet

retro - 2011-02-08 01:57

Having the forum tab as the start page makes things easier for me although it's going to take a few days to get used to. Is there any way we can bring back all those annoying little smileys?

ao - 2011-02-08 02:19

Please, no smileys.  I can think of one or two members who only come here for the smileys.

docs - 2011-02-08 02:33

Huh no smileys ? You mean those <--- ? These are part and parcel of light entertainment on forums surely ? Without them a lot of what is said can be misconstrued, they offer a form of communication without all the hooplar. They have to stay

walkgirl - 2011-02-08 02:57

I agree

retro - 2011-02-08 03:07

what? aww man peace yeah oustretched arms word drinking cheers

Big Grin Leaving

docs - 2011-02-08 03:15

Is there a place to mark all posts as read ?
Once this has been done it will make it easier to see new posts.

walkgirl - 2011-02-08 04:05

The nice wave smilie is not here anymore!

I think I will vote for that one!

chordeater - 2011-02-08 04:56

Thank you for your efforts, of course, but I'd like to say that I would prefer a more intuitive-standard structure. Looking for new posts, or looking at the menus is not user-friendly for me ...

No previous view before publishing a post?

The small menu at the right (which could be included in every post at the bottom) makes part of the display useless ...

Let's see in a few days, when we became familiar with the new forum.

brigadier - 2011-02-08 07:59

Why i'm only Brigadier now? Where's Vytas? :]. Can't change the name..
What about the number of posts and location?

lav.loo - 2011-02-08 08:19

i gotta say at the mo i don't like the change one bit, no no,
but i appreciate the efforts of everyone involved in trying to update for the better.
i really can't see that i will ever get used to this new look, but i will surely try

davebush - 2011-02-08 11:31

ooohhhh....change.......noboddy likes change...at 1st glances it seems a lot harder to use than the old site but we`ll all get use to it im sure

davebush - 2011-02-08 11:32

bloody hell 1/2 my avatars missing

brigadier - 2011-02-08 11:50

i like the changes ! Especialy "Clips"!  I just want my full name here :]

retro - 2011-02-08 12:12

I'm sure it will get sorted eventually, I just miss the 1920x1080 avatars

daiwa - 2011-02-08 13:12

It's certainly more contemporary.
I miss BIG Avatars too retro!

chordeater - 2011-02-08 15:20

The nicknames are tiny, I need a magnifying glass!

and how to quote? ...

stereo2go - 2011-02-08 15:53

More to come...

lasonic.trc920 - 2011-02-08 17:38

The site is looking good, Seems like a great step forward!

driptip - 2011-02-08 19:49

finally a good comment by Lasonic trc-920, thanks man.!!

bredgeo - 2011-02-08 22:00

Okay......

I do not like (yeah)... I do not like the fact that we (I) do not get the replies to my e-mail, like before.

That is, when a reply came the whole entry was send as an "E-mail", thus could have been read on my e-mail sever and only went to ST2G when there was relevant/needed answering to do.

Here, it is now like Boomboxery were we HAVE to go on site to read and/or answer, for we only get a notification.

Could we please have the possibility to "Chose" if we get a e-mail notification, or if we can/want to get the whole entry of the responding member?

Please say yes!

Thanks!

chordeater - 2011-02-09 04:00

Thanks for your efforts and support ... although I can't find "the little quote icon up top" ... sorry.

baby.boomer - 2011-02-09 05:16

At my age, I'm a little slow/skeptical when it comes to learning new things.  Heck, that's one of the reasons I like boomboxes!  Radios and cassettes are fun and easy to use.  iPods, iPads, 4G phones, e-readers and DVR's give me the creeps.  I finally got good at programming our VCR, and then...!

So, the new format for me is a bit intimidating.  I'm feeling overwhelmed!  (And I'm not crazy about the small, square avatars, either.)  But, like Bob Dylan said, we criticize what we can't understand, so I'm hoping that the more I learn about how the new site works, the more I'll like it and appreciate it.  My likes/dislikes aside, it's still quite a programming accomplishment!

docs - 2011-02-09 09:52

The update is a welcome and necessary one in my opinion.
It looks cool and is more upto date with social update technologies which is a bonus.
I'm still looking around but thus far Paul I'm loving it.
MIght need to check some of my user options but thats all.
Otherwise

ohboy - 2011-02-09 11:56

lovin' the new look..
I know its been said, but would like to see the 'search' option added

retro.addict - 2011-02-09 12:01

Hi guys,

Wow this looks REALLY different! The first thing I knew needed a mention was the tiny avatars. I can say the site has a very modern look to it. It'll take some getting used to, for sure. Some questions, I know some of these have been asked already...

Will the avatars be enlarged again?

How do you quote people's messages?

Where is your post count displayed?

Where is your location displayed?

If you click a link that someone has posted, it opens it in the current window. On the original format it opened in a new window, so you could choose which window to see, stereo2go or the link. Is that being brought back?

On the original format of the site, if you scrolled right down to the botton of the forums list, there was a list of all members currently online. Are there any plans to bring that back?

The clips part of the site, is that where anyone can just deposit files here for everyone's viewing? I don't really get that part.

2steppa - 2011-02-09 14:32

Since 'exploring' a little I'm getting more comfortable with this new layout, which is inevitable the more you use it. There are quirks and things that need addressing but it will all come in due course. It's like the changes to Youtube, Yahoo and Flickr they can annoy the sh!t out of you at first but in no time at all you've pretty much forgotten what the old setup even looked like.

fins5 - 2011-02-09 16:23

Looks interesting so far...like quite a few others have said, it'll take some clicking and exploring to get used to a new format, but it looks like there are some real improvements.

diabolikal - 2011-02-09 21:17

Nice new layout!

Havent been here in a while and think maybe my eyes need adjusting but it looks clean.
What happened to all the old posts? Hope not all is lost cinsidering there was some great info going back over the years

devoltoni - 2011-02-10 01:24

Yeah, it's little bit tricky but we must have in the mind that someone has invested much effort for these changes, and they look good for now.
However, I miss the old style...

plop - 2011-02-11 02:04

Not really wanting to sound ungrateful for all the hardwork that Paul has put into updating the site, but I feel annoyed enough to write that some the changes made are a major hindrance.

I find that with this new layout that I am forever having to scroll up and down the page. For people that use a scroll wheel mouse or have enormous resolution screens this may not be an issue, but I rarely have a mouse plugged into my laptop even with a 1600 X 1050 resolution screen (I pity those on smaller screens especially from netbooks) and it is tedious to say the least having to scroll past the eight or so featured topics EVERYTIME I refresh the page before getting to the latest posts in the Walkman forum. Can we limit the number of featured topics or give them their own page for those that care about them? Also i notice that when going to the parent link  for example "The Boombox & Ghettoblaster Message Board", it does not prove a clean simple summary of the latest thread in each of the sub-sections as previously, but instead I am presented with a long list of threads from all sub-sections under the parent page (and no indication which sub-section they are from - thus even more scrolling.

Why also, once in the parent page are there no direct links to the sub-sections as before? To get to them when I have scrolled to the bottom to get to the latest posts, I once again have to get scrolling with the touch pad or cursor to the top to the only place to get to the sub-section. A left hand pane or links at the bottom to the sub-sections would be nice.

I also find general navigation from one page to the next laggy, whereas the previous layout (probably due to it's simplicity) was quick and snappy. Presumably all the avatars the site now needs to download before the page can be constructed. I have had the same result whether this is on IE, Firefox or Sea Monkey.

Granted all this scrolling around and bloated overuse of screen estate is my biggest grumble with this new layout, and is seriously putting me off using this forum in future. Would removing the avatar from each line reduce the line height for each topic and speed up the page display?

A couple of minor points. We seem to have lost the statistical information from members when reading posts, such as post count and date joined. Not overly bothered it has gone, but it was useful to know if an unfamiliar poster is a newbie or long time lurker.

On a positive note, I do welcome the new additions to the forum, such as the blogs and the clips, but at what cost to the usability of the forum and it's potential loss of disgruntled members from the already small user base?

bendycat - 2011-02-11 02:55

I'm like a blind kid in a room full of knifes !  looks sharp and i will find my way around
