Opening links

docs - 2012-08-05 10:58

Could we please make it so opening links in threads opens in a new window (preferably new tab) rather than in the existing window ?

deliverance - 2012-08-05 11:23

no

docs - 2012-08-05 11:24

Oi!

samovar - 2012-08-05 11:33

lol

Nah, not good experience, show me another site that does this.  It gos against a lot of online etiquette.

docs - 2012-08-05 13:40

Its even worse experience to have to hit the back button to get back to stereo2go website.

Other sites all over the net open links in a new tab so that you do not get navigated away from the original site.

EG: clicking a youtube link goes to youtube and if I want to continue on stereo2go I have to hit back. That is not the right etiquette on any site across the entire net.

Simple solution

1)right click on link and choose open in new tab

2)Set your browser up so it opens any link in a new tab

I really dont think Stereo2Go needs to make this a feature when an end user can easily do that themselves

docs - 2012-08-05 14:09

So the onus is on the end user to setup what should be a default forum browsing experience ?

Ok...

How would that work on my iphone or ipad ? Copy and paste links ? Come on be sensible.

philmurray - 2012-08-05 14:13

oh well, cant always have it the way we want it i guess

docs - 2012-08-05 14:32

You can when it's right at the source.

Docs, please post links to forum sites which do this?  Not sure it's the job of Stereo2Go to pioneer a new forum experience.

It seems that there is an option when posting links within the site using the Insert/Edit Link, so the site is already allowing this to be done as it should be.

Test (Using Insert/Edit Link open link in new window (default))

http://www.boomboxery.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=16277

Test (Using Insert/Edit Link open link in same window)

http://www.boomboxery.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=16277

Test (just pasting a URL in without using the Insert/Edit Link)

http://www.boomboxery.com/foru...php?f=16&t=16277

So, sometimes when opening links people put in posts they open in a new window and sometimes they open in the same window.

Check the three links in this post LINK ERROR./lastReply#lastReply

Two open in the same window and therefore navigate away from stereo2go and one doesn't. 1. youtube 2. flickr. 3. "greatest rock bands"

There seems to be some discrepency with the way in which links are dealt with when posted in different ways on the forum. As I say, most forums open links in a new window and we are almost doing this but not consistently.

Test (pasting youtube URL directly)

Agreed.

Also, if you're using a PC with a wheel (scrolling) mouse, point to the link & press (click) the wheel itself. This opens a new tab with the link's destination. No changing settings & still only one click ...

I'm sorry, but the first three test links go nowhere :-)

This does not resolve the inconsistency on the site though. Nor is it a solution for none Windows/PC devices.
