Promotional Marketing Walkmans SHOW YOURS OFF

johnedward - 2009-02-15 08:50

Large corporations used the Walkmans as advertising promotions as gifts and sold or given away at large functions like Benetton Formula I racing during late 80's. Here is my AKAI PM-BF10 with racing stripes! Actually the radio sound is superb. JOHN

johnedward - 2009-02-15 08:54

Only other one I know of IBM had its name and a new computer model on a mid 80's Toshiba. I do not have a picture of it tho. And AgentOrange's Late model Sanyo Benetton Racing.

ao - 2009-02-15 10:24

You read my mind. I wonder what the Benetton connection is.

johnedward - 2009-02-15 11:26

My God I think your Sanyo is such a hot looking player, I probably will never find one. As to connection I did research after person in England I bought my Akai from said they got it at a Formula One race in late 80's. Guess is Benetton had Akai or Sanyo make special colors/with their racing info name on it to give away or sell at races to raise awareness of Benetton in Racing.

It's interesting that Benetton decided to put their name on quite an expensive model rather than a cheaper unit. Afterall, this item must have been 'given away' at some event/meeting, just seems odd.

The unit itself is based around the JJ mechanism of 1986, which, to be honest, has to be a contender for the smallest walkman ever (might be time to re-open that debate). Very similar in mthod to the Sony WM-100 mechanism plus some risky differences compromising quality/durability in favour of size.

mrp32dave - 2009-02-19 10:41

Nice Sanyo's, going back to the smallest size debate surely it must be the WM-150 it's smaller than any of the WM-100 types I have because it does not need the external battery.
It's even slighty smaller than the very small more recent WM-EX670.

ao - 2009-02-19 13:21

The WM-150 is small but the lid lets it down. These Sanyos are in fact very fractionally smaller.

zx280 - 2009-02-20 00:56

What about the `toshy' KT-AS10?

ao - 2009-02-20 04:07

Going by sheer unit volume i.e. width x height x length the colapsing units i.e. AS10/WM10 etc come in well behind the WM-150

Hey Conrad great ad to the thread. John Player a English Tobacco Company sponsered many auto racing teams in 70's 80's. Looks like you have one of the promotional walkmans Lucky guy.
among motor racing fans, following their long association with the Lotus Formula One team, and Norton motorcycle racing team. Leaving John Player's which changed to the black and gold John Player Special colours in 1972 and ended in 1986 with the Lotus 98T. Leaving sponsorship of Team Lotus began with the Lotus 49 in Gold Leaf colours at the 1968 Monaco Grand Prix, continued with the Lotus 72, Indeed, the liveries, particularly the JPS colours, are seen as some of the most beautiful in the racing

THE FUNKIEST WALKMAN ON EARTH CONTENDER !!! A COCA COLA Cassette Walkman with belt clip. Well heck why not hang your COKE CAN on you BELT. Gotta Love this. IT works perfect too, love the stick out cassette look. Has 2 AA batteries licensed by Coca Cola made by AKURA model # C-401. Fun pop top as the volume slider. It even has a interesting have to slip in side of cassette first at angle lock under a tab then push onto cogs/spindles and close cover to lock down cassette tape. Love the way it sticks out BOY do you get looks with this on your belt ! I Agree
Now here is the surprise my GOD IT SOUNDS respectfully good for a obvious inexpensive walkman. Even plays loud and clear with biggest surprise I can DANCE or RUN with it on belt and it plays at steady speed WOWZER! how they do that and why in such a generally cheaper plastic walkman. Well I am impressed actually. Just fell on this one you know how Ebay loves to show on first page suggested finds I was lucky to spy this as usually I ignore that and go right on to My Ebay. Enjoy my fellow walky's Smile Big Grin Laugh Out Loud

johnedward - 2010-03-03 20:04

Here is a lucky find in excellent cosmetic condition and works perfectly. The sound is actually very good for this era early big brick 3 AA battery machine. OF rare note is the GOLD switches, vol and tuning knobs and defining this very early 80's era is the twin headphone jacks and balance rotary knob. The cassette controls are in shiny gold plate. Making this even more unique is the very LONG extending antenna that is unbent AND WAIT A SPEAKER on the back that cuts out when headphone plugged in. The capstans are quality bronze it appears with quality bearings and head mechanism unusual for this off brand Walkman.
CAN ANYONE IDENTIFY WHO JORDACHE contracted to build this and put the Jordache name on it?
It certainly appears to be a better quality player if it is a clone .

JORDACHE Series 120 GOLD WALKMAN

johnedward - 2010-03-03 20:15

Here is a rare AMERICAN EXPRESS GOLD CARD promotional item. The Toshiba RP-S5 was a higher end quality product in the super small elite portable radio only market. Representative of the elite status market niche at that time of Gold Card ownership. The RP-S5 was release in 1983 the year BEFORE the American Express Platinum card was introduced. This probably was a short term give a way with application and approval for the Gold Card. A marketing push to get some new credit card customers that could qualify the following year to step up to a Platinum Card. The sound quality of this tiny radio is soul inspiring. The amplifier power must be in the 30-40mw range as it POUNDS my Koss Port a Pro's. Listening now to it, go Van Halen Big Grin Smile
