These matching stereo stacks became very popular in the 80's
and continues to this day.
Pioneer might have been the first to do this.
Many boombox's were styled like them.

There are some great deals to be had out there--compared to what this stuff cost new in the day. You can't easily get stuff like this anymore. Can you? I have a short stack of decent Pioneer I paid dearly for. Didn't want to spring for remote at the time--bad decision. Never had a decent Cassette deck to match the Pioneer CD and reciever units untill my aunt gave me her unused Sony 2x deck with all the bells & Whistles. I know at the time I assembled the units it was just chance that they matched--I was really anti stack at the time. I liked the mismatched stacks of brute power and force.
JUST DON'T SET THOSE ALBUMS ON TOP OF THE AMP--YOU'LL BLOCK THE VENTS AND THE PARTY IS OVER!!

i have a kenwood stack and some sansui stack stuff from the seventies.
the pioneer stuff in your pic is pretty nice.
stacked components have been around a lot longer than the eighties.

I think stacks are great, i have a couple of Technics and others. 6 all up at the moment !
I agree entirely with WOMBAT, for the quality and what these cost in the day they are usually sold incredibly cheap when you can find them.

For $50 these components come with the original Pioneer woodgrain speakers you can see on the edge of the picture. $50 very well spent i believe !

yeah thats a pretty nice deal. most of these have very little use on them too.
i guess part of it is alot of the people who bought them just overestimated there passion for music.
i tend to lean a little more towards recievers,but i do have some nice stacks of intergrated gear.
the price of some of these is starting to climb,but there is still lots to be had for next to nothing.

Yes, those are adhesive lables stuck to the face of the Poineer units. The sexy black finish has tiny white factory labels, however they are impossible to read in dim light when I had the units in a low cabinet.

That looks like a Technic or a Pioneer Receiver!!! Either way, they're both Panasonics. I miss the old wood grain finish, the silver chrome, and the rich Corinthian leather as in the Chrysler Cordoba!

She's a Pioneer SX-1980. Works perfectly, 360watts, enough to weld with.

Not sure Pioneer had much to do with Panasonic though.

Yep, they made this stuff the best back in the 70's. By the mid 1980's it had all faded to the black plastic crap we all know today. Fisher had some great stuff in the 70's, but the 80's stuff pictured was awful, inside and out. They used cheesy components that would blow and send major DC to your speakers, melting the voice coils.

Technics was a division of Panasonic which was a division of Matsu****a.

I've since built new racks for the equipment. The Akai GX-630D-SS has been replaced with an Akai GX-620 and soon an Akai GX-636. There is now a Pioneer RT-707 7" open reel deck in there, as well as multiple dbx processors. A lot of the newer equipment to the right has been sold off due to lack of space.

McIntosh Amp driving the Polk SAD 1.2 ( 185 lbs each Integra driving the Polk 2.3 ( 155 lbs each and a sunfire sig. II @ 625 x 2 driving the Carver amazings. Preamp is now a carver C19 TUBE preamp. I will be selling off my adcom 565 pre soon since I like the C19 better. I have a denon 62 turntable and a technics 1200. Once it is all look a little better I will get a pic of them.


I have always love the way the old pioneers looked from the SX on to the SPEC stuff.

Sansiu G is also some great looking stuff.

I bought that very Fisher tape deck out of a thrift in the early '00s. It was a junky plastic affair, and it never made quality recordings despite cleaning the heads and having a friend demag them. Honestly, it felt like a toy, and when I opened it up after it died a few years later, I was surprised to see just how pathetically baren it was inside. I also own a Fisher CD deck, and it was supposedly the first to sell under $200. It still works, but has a harsh brick wall sound and looks cheaply built inside (shonei caps?)

Fishers were a bit junky I guess.
I remember fixing a Fisher Amplifier
and I like it for some reason.
Even though it was junk.
It was made using the 90's method of making them.
Donno which model is which but some are better made.

I have a Marantz 4 channel Reciever packed away somewhere.
Used ones were easy to find at one time.
Not anymore.
