Yeah, I started collecting those first. Reliving my childhood :-). I'm a fan of Tamiya R/C Models as much as anything with a Sony name on it :-).

I've updated the post with some extra pictures, have a look at the first entry in this post.

I've included the WM-EX20 which I recently acquired plus a few other Walkman's such as the TCD-D8 DAT Walkman which are pretty much from the same era as the WM-EX20 (late 1990's / early 2000's).

Enjoy.

Sony WM-D3 Professional Recording Walkman (1986)

Sony WM-DD9 Walkman (1992) pictured with Sony MDR-EX90LP Headphones (2006)

These two Walkman's arrived this week. The WM-D3 is in excellent condition but has the dreaded broken gear, the guy selling it told me it was making a click click noise so I new that the gear was on the way out. I thought I would give repairing the gear a try. I'll keep you guys posted on this one, I've got an idea that may work better than just putting a blob of epoxy over the crack.

The Sony WM-DD9 is a minter and works perfectly. The sound quality is really good :-). I had to clean the heads and pitch roller, I think the previous owner never bothered with any maintenance.

Wow Greg fantastic! I love your Sony speakers! I recognize some of the stuff as I have them too - the NH1 minidisc, DC2 walkman and Panasonic CT800 cd player. All excellent machines. How would you compare the DC2 and DD9 soundwise and where would you put NH1 soundwise. To me it sounds wonderful with sensitive high quality earphones. With full size headphones, DC2 is best.

gregorybotha - 2009-12-04 21:31

Hi Tuna, The Sony speakers were a NIB pair I got on eBay. I think there is still a pair available. I paid $89. I wanted to collect them as these squares speakers (APM) are quite rare and something Sony came up with in the early 80's. These are genuine APM speakers as some of the square ones around at the time were fakes.

I would say that the WM-DD9 is better sounding than the WM-DC2, the head allows for better high frequencies. It may also just be a matter of personal taste as both are excellent Walkman's.

The Sony NH1 is definitely one of the best Minidisc players on account of it having a Digital Amp, I think it was also the 10th anniversary Minidisc player. It could record in uncompressed .WAV format and supported Hi-MD.

i believe some sony mini disc recorders use them. i also use one in my sony d-ej925 cd player. they are the best designed remotes i can think of. they have been available on ebay out of china for about 8.00.
