First up is iPhone 16gb Jailbroken with newer frimware 3.1.2 with baseband 5.11, unlock to work with any GSM network, so when I travel I can use it.

Like
1. Still have very good sound quality despite the audio codec
2. Does 30ma + 30ma on the headphone stage can power most highend headphone no problem.
3. Internet does full HTML and fast work just as good as a computer and can stream video.
4. LCD screen is top notch
5. Can view Ebooks and DOC and PDF make this a very usefull device.

Dislikes
1. audio codec ConsolePlug CP21125 338S0506 why they didn't use the wolfson audio chip beat me?
2. Battery life when listening to music, so don't use it that much for listening to music anymore used the Zune HD now

WHOA..... way to high tech for my old blood...Impressive certainly and the next age of audio but am sorry analog is actual real sound waves put on recording media record or tape. Yes you have background noise hiss or crack/pops etc but eh subtle details of music the depth of soundstage just can not be expressed with 0's and 1's yet.... ease of use, fast access of 1000's of titles and transfer copy speed ok right no comparison but the very best sound.. sorry I stand that my dbx vinyl records with dynavector moving coil cartridge and old Maggies with subwoofer and expansion compression dbx equipment provides a sound few have ever heard from audio home equipment. No ipod hooked to my stereo or cd will give equivalent. dbx encoded tapes with a PPA-1 dbx decoder make hiss non-existent.
It is great to see these fine examples and your knowledge technically both older cassette technology and this new is very impressive. We all are thankful for your mechanical and electrical insights into what most of us collectors just use and when stops working right retire to shelf and find another till it give up the ghost. Maybe in another decade I will recant to MP4 etc but for now I am still a "WALKMAN" cassette version. Cheers

It's a myth that we need these things, they just want your soul.

Since April 2007 I've had a 5th Gen iPod video 80GB, in black.

It's very versatile for an "old" one: It currently holds holds over 8500 songs, plus some top-choice comedy vids such as Blackadder & Fawlty Towers. Also, Scooby Doo for the kids as well as games: Pac Man, Sonic the Hedgehog, Pole Position, Tetris etc.
I use the iPod "notes" feature to read ebooks, using these guys: http://ebookhood.com/
Tonight, I'm off to see Depeche Mode in London, so a playlist of tonight's setlist awaits my pleasure in the car on the way there.

I'm cynical enough to not expect it to last any more than another couple of years, by which time I hope there will be an iPod Touch with a big enough capacity to replace it - I like the "pocket surfer" idea of the Touch.

Anyway, here it is in my son's Lasonic i931:

You own one of the best last Sony MP3 players made, hold on to that guy.

Bought one of the new 32GB X Series Walkman® MP3 Player right before the Zune HD came out, worst piece of overpriced junk ever, paid $375 for it had to turn the volume up all the way just to hear the thing, due to it's horrible headphone amp due to it rated at 5mw - 5mw can't power lowend headphones let alone highend sets and way to bright, seem like all the new sonys walkmans are junk now. Wish I had time to return it to the store in time. Now just sitting in a box somewhere collecting dust, might list it on eBay sometime soon.

As far as the Zune HD goes, one of the best MP3 player out there sound pretty good, listen to alot of Jazz classic and rock on it, instruments sound clear not drowned out and has a good headphone stage 25mw - 25mw or you can get the 120gb harddrive based one not good for running due to shock but has a better headphone stage does 30mw - 30mw of power, pretty much can power anything. The Zune has a very accurate, clean and true sound that I prefer over iPods, they also use the wolfson WM8978 codec for there audio encoder.

Conclusion

Its no iPod touch , that for sure....the Zune HD is no where near the iPod......Its waaaay better...........you can't compare an iPod touch to a Zune HD...thats like comparing a Rolls-Royce Phantom ( Zune HD ) to a Mini Cooper ( Apple iPod Touch) but I not considering both as portable computer BUT as portable media player.

As far as Ipod goes the older ones are better due to they use the wolfson codec chip and not the ConsolePlug CP21125 338S0506 which sounds OK but not the best, If you want the best Ipod get the 5th Gen iPod video, sounds the best.

Go with the zune HD for a few buck more they have a 16gb version for $225, have more features with hd radio tuner and sounds better overall, the newer ipods use the cmedia chip there not as good, but they are not that bad. But if you do get one all you need is itunes install on you computer.
