A friend of mine from Twitter was going to send me a Panasonic RQ-V186, but he hasn't been able to do so yet. So in the hunt for a stopgap Walkman, I asked an (IRL, mind you) friend if they had one. She did, and it was unused, so she gave it to me totally impromptu at the end of my third period class.
What was it? A Shinaon MG-Z1 "Audio-Mate" stereo taking two AA/SUM-3 batteries, and guessing from the styling and the use of a belt to drive the motor, from the early-ish 80's. As you can tell from the below photos, it's also rather simple. Just play, stop, and FF buttons. No pause, no rewind, no tape selector, not even an off switch. It certainly isn't any hi-fi, and suffers from some hiss as well as a bit of wow & flutter, but it'll work until I get that Panasonic. Any day now!
(This is actually my first portable stereo; I did have a Sony S2 walkman but I opened it out of curiosity and broke it entirely at the age of 11. Sorry about that!)
Nice one grats. As long as you have some old school on the move, everyone's happy!
*Nevermind. Popped in some new batteries and the constant speed changes are gone.
