Sony TCM-10 RECORDING version of WM-10 + WM-20,30,40 pictures

johnedward - 2010-10-06 21:25

Time to share a new gem of rarity added to my collection of the venerable WM-10, WM-20, WM-30 and WM-40 Series of collapsible very small players. The TCM-10 was I believe a UK release model designed within the WM-10 series unit but adding a full recording function and Boundary effect condenser microphone and pause function that cut power to motor. Curiously it appears to keep size down Dolby B was left out as also a Norm/CrO2-Metal switch. An external mic jack was added. Of note in this already squeezed down size Sony managed to install a rear SPEAKER ... the full size of speaker is revealed only upon pulling cover open when accommodating a cassette. The player is only slightly larger in thickness with cover and main body enlarged. The Walkman godz have smiled Big Grin upon me as the unit I acquired is in Mint condition and has the excellent condition case. I was pleasantly surprised to find it plays perfectly with good sound quality. The record function works but appears there is a ground loose so quality of recording fades in and out somewhat. The door mechanism is uniquely different than others in the series but most like the WM-30. I have only seen one member AgentOrange having one of these. Now we know of two in existence Smile Enjoying listening to Gary Stadler ( VERY PEACEFUL CALMING )on the TCM-10 as I type this Razz

Simply beautiful, great additions to your collection. I never really took to these walkmans, it just seemed the whole unit was designed around the seemingly pointless concept of the expandable case, I mean, you have to put the cassette somewhere so how are you saving any space? My guess is that it was an attempt for Sony to 'claim' that they had the smallest walkman, which I guess, they did.

This doesn't distract away from the fact that Sony created a truly iconic item in the WM-10. Walkmans were never going to be this simple again & the styling reflects this simplicity as well as the period, when I think of 1983 I think of the WM-10.

The TCM-10 is stupidly rare, not quite a green F107 but certainly rarer than a red WM-2. I was lucky enough to badger DocP for his boxed version a few years back, in fact, I'm not sure he's spoken to me since Smile

ha ha AO is a dear friend and I am glad he still has the TCM 10 .

Am all the more glad and gracious about it because......I have 4 TCM 10s one boxed black, one boxed silver and two unboxed blacks.(shall post pics over the weekend)

Michael Ma's offer at $99 is quite a decent price considering how rare the unit is. So if someone wants to complete their wm10 Saga go for it with no regrets

Cool! Never knew they made a WM-10 recorder.

Sony did make the WM-800 Double Cassette recorder.  It is basically 2 WM-10 walkmans back to back, with One having a recording circuit.  It's just not the same size factor svelte as a wm-10.  There is a thread in here about the model WM-800

I know about the WM-W800. It is a walkman dual cassette recorder in Stereo unlike the TCM series which they are in mono.
