Simple request for info: does anyone have info about a box made by "General Sound" with model number GS-4040?
It is a big, black one-piece that almost looks like a 5-piece, with a motorized disco ball on top in front of a flip-up reflector panel similar to the Mexican one shown burning up in another thread here, plus a rectangular-button "traffic light" column of colored lights down each end of the front, just past the speakers. Also flashing lights (one large white/rainbow one and and four small red ones) within each speaker grill area?
It was made in China.
I thought it was one pictured here on S2G, but I can't find any info about this model, anywhere, so far. Is it in the Database? Does anyone have it? I'd like to know who actually made it, where (what city), and when, and if it appeared under any other brand names, if anyone knows these things. Thanks.
I guess this one!?:

Quite similar, but not quite the same. Probably the same manufacturer, but a different model in the series.
The biggest difference is that there is an additional section on each end, with large "lozenge" lights that flash down sequentially (two at a time) like traffic lights. These are not add-ons; they are molded right in as an integral part of the box. Also, each section (like the middle part and the speaker parts) has an "indent" to visually separate it from the adjacent section.
The colors, writing and "trimmings" and the pattern next to the equalizer are different, too, although these are mostly cosmetic differences applied superficially. There is a gold-colored horizontal bar across the speaker area in between the woofer below and the tweeter + light thing (whitish lights shining through some grating or something)above. The gold bar (actually probably just a tape or something like that) has the word "stereo" written in the middle, with two red flashing lights on either side of it.
The decals/artwork on the cassette doors are also completely different; the one on the left mentions 72 watts (pmpo) and the one on the right mentions Karaoke.
There are no little lights around the speaker area on mine. Maybe that circuitry is used to drive the "traffic lights", instead. I'm just guessing that, but it would make sense, if you were trying to create variations using some of the same components.
There are large letters (with small print underneath) on each end, too. The lights on the top look identical, except that they are red on mine [The covers are black, but the lights themselves are red, perhaps red front glass or gel filters?]. Those top lights are removable if you pull them up carefully, being stuck down with two posts that also make the electrical contact for the light (like built-in jacks).
The giveaways that these should be the same maker are the small white print on the top add-on lights, the general layout, the cassette control buttons and other buttons (mine has two red buttons below where the on in the pic has one red and one black), and the triple port-holes on the bottom. Must be the same company, just have a different model.
THANKS, guys!
I'll try to get pics up before too long, of the one I got.. A close in-law is getting married day-after-tomorrow, I'm in a studio all day Monday, and I'm swamped for the next few days in general, but I'll try to do something about it next week.

arkay these one might be interesting for you:

Okay, now you are REALLY CLOSE. The main body of the box I got looks exactly like that last pic, the "Mega 5000", and those lights on the side are what I was calling "traffic lights". That much is the same, EXCEPT the top part on the box I got has the fold-up reflector, mirror ball and twin "apotlights" of the boxes shown earlier/above.
Just put the bottom half of the last pic with the top half of the top pic, and that's exactly it.
Oh, with one other difference: the large red lights in the speaker area in that pic are red; on mine, they are white, but the top "spotlights" are red.
Oh, and I just noticed another difference: the wavy-line design on the panel next to the equalizer is different, too. But the basic case/housing is the same, for sure.
TRR, your collection of pics never ceases to amaze and satisfy! THANKS!
Do you have any info on WHEN these were made? [Maybe I should send a note to the manufacturer and
ask?]
ure welcome ol' arkay...
assumed these designs were sold in a production span from 1989 (I did not see them earlier.)till 1995/96..(never saw one in a shop later...)
I look forward to see the other one.
