My TOSHIBA COLLECTION 21 Walkmans JohnEdward

johnedward - 2009-04-04 18:38

Welcome to my Favorite Make of Walkman. The R1 and R2 are the ultimate BRICKS like solid steel. My R1 has the finest sounding radio of all makes I have pre 1990 with clarity, stereo separation and open presence that is astounding. My collection includes all 6 of the first models made with an additional 8 more. Great build quality but I have not been inside one yet to comment on that area. Oh and by the way the early models clearly have power enough to drive any headphones to melt down or ears first LOL Smile The specifications from owner manual KT-S2 show 40 mw x 2 into headphones compare that to most mid 80's/90's output of 4-6 mw per channel that makes the KT-S2 nearly 10x the power output than newer models no wonder its loud ! The FM modules are my most favorite old style Walkmans to collect. What a grand idea back then. I have listed Serial numbers with special note my KT-AS10 appears to be in the first 400 made WOW. Also see my post on SERIAL NUMBERS Deciphered in chat area. From this many models it appears the most ALL models from Toshiba had limited units made usually only a few thousand making this manufacturer very collectible.

Here is a group shot of early 9 models together.
Note as I post each make of Walkman I add new ones they will be added to original post so watch for new models. ENJOY

johnedward - 2009-04-04 18:52

What a impressive looking machine !!

johnedward - 2009-04-04 18:59

Here is the KT-R2 which had automatic music search way back when. MQTS I believe was one of the first skip feature to find next song on a Walkman.

johnedward - 2009-04-04 19:07

Here is the earliest Toshiba's ALL 3 the KT-S1, KT-S2 and KT-S3 all with the FM module RP-S2 I am missing the AM module RP-A2 in RED. Anyone have one to sell PM me. The KT-S1 and S2 were Toshiba's first Walkman models released in 1981 with the KT-RS1 and KT-S3 being released in 1982.

johnedward - 2009-04-04 19:13

The Holy Grail KT-S2 with owners manual, and both covers including rare cover for Tuner Module found this unit in UK. From the owner manual the battery life for 4 AA batteries was 3 hours at 1 mw output with tape... OMG so if you played it loud less than 2 hours on 4 batteries WOW talk about expensive to operate. The radio would last 11 hours. Better carry a 12 pack of extra batteries with you. Compare that to some late model Walkmans with 100 hours of continuous operation on 2 batteries. That is a efficiency increase of over 3000 % in 15 years.

Here is a great description from board members site www.pocketcalculatorshow.com Fantastic reference site for ALL walkmans and gadgets!
KT-S2
1986. Behold, the top of the line portable from Toshiba. Can you believe the features of this thing? Digital tuning, logic controls, Dolby, presets, auto-reverse, and a graphic eq. Unbelievable. No doubt there was some sticker shock for this back in '86--we're sure this model sold for at least $150 new back then. We're willing to bet (and justify) one of these getting top dollar on Ebay today. 1981. Every collection has a "signature piece" and this may be it--Toshiba's KT-S2. With the weight of a brick this model shows absolutely every sign of quality--from the metal chassis, to the ejecting well door, to the commanding tape control buttons. The KT-S2 offered separate left and right volume controls, normal/metal tape type swith, hi-lo tone switch, and radio/tape function switch. The requisite 4 penliight batteries only adds to the massiveness of the KT-S2. Here's a pic showing a closer look at the front. You'll notice a yellow plastic button set within the chrome play button. That's the "Hot Line" button, which mutes the portable's audio, captures ambient noise via an internal microphone and sends it to the user's headphones. The mystery is what the "T.L." abbreviation stands for above the play button. The most unusual feature of the KT-S2 is the FM receiver. Yes, the KT-S2 offered an FM receiver and cassette playing capability way back in '81. The radio portion is contained within a cassette-shaped component which fits into the cassette chamber. This device has its own model number, called the RP-S2. Even this little module has some cool features- an LED indicator for stereo and a mono-stereo switch. Here's a pic of the front of the RP-S2, and here's one of the back. Rumor has it that an AM module was also available in Japan. As far as we can tell, Toshiba was the first, but not the last to offer radio tuning within a removeable module like this one. *Update* Yep, the RP-A2 was Toshiba's AM Tuner Pack that worked in both the KT-S2 and KT-S1.

johnedward - 2009-04-04 19:19

KT-S3 there is a KTS4 with very kewl ORANGE lettering on it with very similar look as this KT-S3

Here is picture from my files of KT-S4

Very, very nice, John!
Keep posting your collection.

johnedward - 2009-04-04 20:36

Thank you Milo, whew... just finished taken last few model pictures, pick the best, upload and post.. it is a all night deal. Here comes the rest of my bunch.
KT-VS1 Japan release only with Tuner module AM/FM RP-AF1 unit had accessory of separate power amplifier and separate speakers I still need to acquire.

rerooted - 2009-04-04 20:39

i was just checking back to see what i paid for my kt-s1 which i just got several weeks ago. i already had 3 kt-s3's and will sooner or later get a kt-s2. none were working except the tuner pacs. i paid 8.99 delivered for the player and the tuner pac. i was the lone bidder for it. it's close to near mint and now runs fine. they are fairly easy to put that top belt on. everyone should be able to afford one of these quality machines for there collection. i really liked the gun-blued effect on the plate the cassette sets on. there are alot around now but i doubt there will be forever.

rerooted - 2009-04-04 20:50

one note of caution: some of the slightly later toshibas used an unusual hub system. a good example is the kt-as1. if you want one they are tuff to keep in good working order. i have only one thing to say about my experience trying to just change the belt. BUMMER!!!!!!!! i had one of those little springs jump out never to be seen again. on the bright side though,, the tuner pack works great...

johnedward - 2009-04-04 20:53

Ah another HOLY GRAIL the KT-4066 with their ad that said NEXT YEAR THE KITCHEN SINK. Has to to be the ULTIMATE button feature overload. Believe it was one of first Walkmans to have a digital bar graph indicator instead of a moving needle. The FM and Stereo indicator appear when tuned in digital window to left. OK who at Toshiba came up with the mechanical NIGHTMARE of the FF and Rwd buttons on door ... YES on my first KT-4026 put in tape played great FF then opened and had cog parts fly at me... STUPID design. Now on my other models with this I wont even touch those two functions when I use them !!!!

johnedward - 2009-04-04 21:04

I totally agree with you rerooted! I found all the hub parts except that pesky bouncy escape velocity spring. Double BUMMER.
HERE is the KT-4026 boxed with headphones and owners manual. NOTE I am not EVEN trying the ff or Rwd functions tho seller said they worked. So now have one for parts.

johnedward - 2009-04-04 21:09

Here is a bulky but well featured KT-4551 with actually pretty good sound and an ALARM. Note most of time if you find one the digital display is not working but not effect functions as long as your good at being a blind pig finding his way Eek

johnedward - 2009-04-04 21:14

Here is a rather rare beasty the KT-2036 AM/FM Analog Headphones even the foam is still perfect. They work GREAT and sound GOOD.
Some of you may remember the TV series MY FAVORITE MARTIAN he had those two antenna come up from back of his head to talk to Mars. I FEEL just like that wearing them.. just have not got myself to walk around in public with the single shinny chrome antenna sticking up 1 foot Laugh Out Loud Leaving

johnedward - 2009-04-04 21:20

Group picture of my Toshiba Tuner Modules
RP-S2, RP-AF1, RP-AF2, RP-AF3, RP-AF5, RP-AF6 and RP-AF7. Picture also here are my two FM modules I ran across from Switzerland with orig. owner manuals for the walkmans... dog I just NEED THE WALKMAN AND Speaker base.
FM Modules I have RP-AF2 for KT-AS1 (need walkman)
RP-AF3 for RT-CS1 (need base and removable walkman unit)
From pocketcalculator is this picture of KT-S1 with the RED RP-A2 AM tuner module.

If anyone has picture of the RP-AF4 please post
to this topic so all EIGHT tuner modules are for reference here also model # it is from.

KT-AS10 with Tuner module

KT-4055 with RP-AF7 1985 THE LAST Tuner Module offered from TOSHIBA

johnedward - 2009-04-04 21:25

Here is a very beautiful smaller unit from Tosh. KT-4067 recording unit. The side with function buttons on it is all CHROME. Pictures do not do this player justice. It is just slightly larger than a cassette box.

johnedward - 2009-04-04 21:43

Saved another rare beast for last. The recording KT-RS1 with the RP-AF6 AM/FM tuner module which I believe was the next to LAST Toshiba with tuner module offered. Can anyone confirm this? Believe it was released 84/85. Note it has the original velvet pouch for the EM-RS1 microphone which mounts on top of player. This is near mint condition very proud of this one.
Well that's all folks for now. Still have to post 71 more walkmans by make as my collection today reached 110. OH NO did I just count them.. if you know how many you have you dont have enough someone said..... boy am I addicted.
Stay in touch all and thank you for sharing my enthusiasm for these great technical wonders worth preserving and ENJOYING still. Walk ON !!
Razz Nod Yes Leaving Leaving

Walkgirl that is great you have some great Toshiba Walkmans. Your KT-V780 is beautiful in the black and silver. I have never seen one. Your KT-S1 NIB is simply breathtakingly superb. Bravo even the box is mint on outside, AMAZING. Thank you for adding to my post the pictures! Seems you can get lucky finding the Japan only models sometimes down under in Australia. Here are two brochure scans to share.

Here we have the KT-AS10 one of the most sought after Toshiba's. Few Walkman's achieve a stand alone design different from nearly all others. This model does this. With its signiture FM module shrunk to fit the much smaller than cassette size player. With a serial number showing this unit to be the 396 one made a rare stroke of luck for a collector to have such low production number.

johnedward - 2009-05-10 09:05

Indeed a lucky find #396 !!!!

NOTE THE REALLY TRUE SMALL SIZE OF THIS UNIT COMPARED TO A CASSETTE CASE. Heavy quality unit for its size. I Agree Big Grin

i have one just like it. it's number 1053. these numbers are really low. i wonder if they had a low production run. i have a black one in pieces which is numbered 2458. that was one i tried to replace the belt on. i didn't even come close.

TOSHIBA KT-4055 rare RED
Here we have an interesting model that was released the year after the KT-AS10 (1984 @ $110 ) which had a ALL METAL body. The KT-4055 ( 1985 )is mechanically very similar but has a plastic body and just a metal face plate ( which interesting have picture of it off)apparently to reduce cost and sale price. Also of interest is the FM tuner module which is identical to the KT-AS10 instead of being RP-AF5 is a RP-AF7 I believe this to be the LAST OF THE TUNER MODULES for Toshiba. (see prior post this topic all tuner modules).
History of this actual model is world traveler as I bought it from Original female owner who purchased this in PARIS new then lived in GREECE and now I have it in the USA.
ALSO TO NOTE these ultra mini players most all when found have NO belt clip. THIS HAS the original clip/shoulder strap. The unit FM works flawlessly and tape works but the FF round button has been lost thus hole on front cover showing cog. Anyone have a unit for parts with this let me know.
