JVC PC-6 / PC-5 / PC-3 Comparison

71spud - 2009-03-13 08:23

You can follow my purchase of the JVC PC-6 here.

As promised I am doing a comparison of the JVC PC-6, PC-5 and PC-3. I am also throwing in some other JVC "PC" speaker pictures for reference. The post this morning is going to be pretty much limited to pictures due to time. A quick background on the PC-6 is that it is a variation on the PC-3. It used the same tuner, pre-amp and deck as the PC-3 (except for "SAE" screen printed by a switch on the pre-amp that is added on the PC-6). The PC-6 adds a EQ section even though the PC-3 already has bass and treble controls. It is interesting to note that while the EQ can be shut off, when it is "on" the bass and treble controls still function. Imagine the kind of curve you can get on that! Also the PC-6 has large 2-way speakers. I had previously found an original service manual for the PC-6 that verifies the above information and that the PC-6 designation was "official". It also refers you back to the PC-3 service manual for service information on the tuner, pre and tape deck.

On to the pictures......

Notice that the PC-6 speakers look more like the PC-5 than the PC-3....

Here are a few more models to compare....
Just the Speakers ---- (L-R) PC-55 / PC-11 / PC-6

Including the LARGE RB-95K Speakers that were an option for the PC-5 (Seen in the PC-5 litereature) These seem to be the inspiration for the PC-6 speakers.

In the future I will add specs and an A/B/C/(D,E,F??) comparison of sound quality. Right now I can say that I am listening to the PC-6 and it sounds amazing.... Cool

If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Congrat's Spud!!! glad everything turned out well. Very unique PCSmile Is that a 3 way speaker, or is that a port on top?

Thanks.

71spud - 2009-03-13 08:54

Thanks Peter!

Yes, in that last picture all 4 speakers are ported in the front (Top). The two speakers on the left (RB-95K and PC-6) are two-way and the two on the right (PC-5 and PC-3) are full-range, single driver speakers.

all the goods with all the research and then all the official manuals --
that is real first class collecting, spud.

---------------------

is that now totally complete for this jvc series?

71spud - 2009-03-13 10:53

Thanks Ira.... Smile

No I don't consider that the complete PC series. I didn't show the black PC-550 speaker because it is the same size as the 55. But there are also other variations out there Wink that I still seek and a ton of "also-ran" in the PC series that came out later (PC-2,25,27,30,35,37,47,50,70,90,150,200 and more I am forgetting. Not counting even later issues that had a "W" or a "V" after the PC, but before the number. I don't collect those.) Once they stopped making the "PC" center section break down into at least 2 sections for "home" use I don't think you can really count it as quite the same even though they are "3 piece".

After the boomers there are service manuals, owners manuals, accessories, original boxes, brochures, ads....... Collecting can really become endless and frustrating if you don't draw the line somewhere. So one can never be quite complete without a time machine. I do have a number of JVC brochures, some original JVC owners manuals, original JVC boxes, and over 100 original JVC service manuals. And some accessories for my personal grail the PC-5. (I will post a picture sometime of the PC-5 and the related collectables) And as you know quite a number of the older JVC boomboxes (Very late 70's through very early 80's are my focus... PC-***, RC-***, RC-M**, RC-S** DC-** mainly) And boxes that are similar in design or intent to the PC-5 from a few different manufacturers.

I stay busy.... Smile

Love to see all that literature one day! I think there is someone else on here who has a crazy amount of brochures as well...

too true.
With my Hitachi 3Ds I've restricted myself to one model from each chassis-type (for example, if the same b-box was available with a digital or analog tuner, I don't need both), & only 3Ds that take batteries. Otherwise the search would be endless...

Cool Spud. I'm glad that deal turned out for you. Cool

oldskool69 - 2009-03-13 17:48

That is awsome! I think Prime and Isolator are the only one who can match you for that brand specific focus! Big Grin

Have you tried making one giant multi amp pc box, running all those speakers?
Like the ultimate lego set!

Very cool man!
Peace,
Pail Z.

That PC-6 is sweet looking. I bet you get a mega bass boost with the EQ/bass controls. Big Grin

Those RB-95K speakers look huge! You mentioned they were an option for the PC-5; so do they assemble as one unit with the PC-5 center section? Seems like it would be gigantic with those speakers.

viennasound - 2009-03-18 10:40

If anyone will try it, i´m going to sell my PC-5. Big Grin Wink

71spud - 2009-03-18 11:13

Look HERE for my post regarding finding my RB-95k speakers. You will see some cool pictures of the RB-95k speakers next to one of my PC-5s and also a mock-up of what a "PC" might look like using the RB-95K speakers. You will also see them pictured in the JVC literature. Smile

EDIT: I just noticed....... it was exactly a year ago today I made that post. And I have done absolutely nothing towards that project. Roll Eyes Other than think about it and dream... I do have alot more to work with now though, so I know the PC-5000 will happen some day... Smile
