Sony WM-10II Slipping Belt?
outland - 2011-11-22 01:39
Recently, I've been having a problem with my Sony WM-10II. It seems to play tapes with some ridiculous W & F. The reel spins for about a second, slows to an almost stop, then continues, and on and on. This happens on almost every tape, and replacing the battery doesn't help.
I don't know if it's a belt issue, because slowing down the big silver reel slows the motor. But slowing down the little black reel that turns the tape is possible without slowing the motor. Here's a picture to show the silver & black reels that I'm talking about:
Thus, I don't know if it's a belt issue. Does anyone know what this could be?
in picture above the the upper left reel in the player is the motor.
Your belt is slipping - You're gonna need a replacement belt soon - best replacing belt before it breaks and possible jams the motor/rotor/reel. the belt is about 3bux plus a stupid shipping charge like 7bux from the few place's that still have this belt in stock, or buying a belt 'kit' = 'lot's of belts'-plus the one you need.... from DocP member on here

Ah, I was afraid it was so. Thanks for the speedy reply.
What I don't understand is why the silver reel is unaffected by the faulty belt. Is it directly connected to the motor?

i dont remenber the thread or it maybe a offsite somewhere as i read it once before ( search around yourself please )
Yes the - once again the upper reel, spindle, silver-plate to black spindle that ENTIRE round thing is the MOTOR whcih then drive's a belt to the other reel it's very complicated but there is a place out there somewhere that describes this much bettter than I can as this is a very elegant solution to get this all done - you can probally find this infor faster than it took me to type all this with Nine finger's here and backspacing and respelling an reading this that I typed here and re-reading and retyping and correcting and remembering all this about all of this as I have waay too much on my mind except for the fact that it is morning over here in Houston TX and am on my third cup-o-java

Two issues that may effect wow and flutter
a) loose belt - replace belt
b) grimy pinch roller ...take a small piece of 2000 grade emery paper (real fine) and hold it flat against the pinch roller to rub off the shiny caked layer and to make the surface uniform and capable of gripping
That's not a suspicious way to put it or anything.
Merryland, U_S_A. I'm 29, and even my name is all-American; John. Do you know of any repair shops in the area?

19 November I sold my car! cause something here happened to it that shouldnt never had happened to it while I was not here as I was gone most of the day to my Aunt's Funeral in the Woodlands Texas and when i came back and discovered he next day what had happened and then was gonna go an install more parts to raise the value to the car before selling it only to discover that it was more broken than when i just had moved it mere hours before...
dont know of any shops on the east coast havent lived there since 1975-1980 living in Virginia-Beach, Virginia.

That's a bummer. Life goes on though, and so will yours.
I cleaned the pinch roller and the problem seemed to go away for a while. After drying however, it came back. It's less noticeable now, but it's there. I'm at a loss.
Anyone? I think I'll have to take it to a dedicated repair shop. Now where would I fine one..

Indeed, I took it over to a local repair shop today.
outland - 2011-12-20 00:25
Well, I got the Walkman back. The belt issue is fixed.
However, now there is another problem.
docp - 2011-12-25 08:41
sounds very much like a damaged headphone socket unless the repair guys have messed up the flexible pcb that connects to the socket

Well, I got the Walkman back. The belt issue is fixed.
However, now there is another problem. The headphone jack only outputs the left channel unless it is held at an angle by a finger or some sort. Does anyone how this can be fixed? Cleaning it produces no help.
This is quite upsetting, as I've spent quite a bit on this player. I would like it to work.
Oh well, happy holidays,
John
Could be crack jack or colde solder joint, can be fixed.
outland - 2011-12-27 14:15
Well, I got a call from the technician today.
retrodos - 2011-12-27 14:21
Sounds like a bad technican, it can be fix, I fixed ones where people broke the headphone jack off the board, also take part of the PCB with it in the process. Glued the board back together then jump all the traces that were rip off. But do have a real good solder station and reflow machine, as I replace IC's and varies surface mounted components all the time. Most techs are what we call "board swapper", they don't know how to actually fix the board, they just know how to replace it !! And $300 is alot, most crap shops, overcharge people. That job sure have cost no more then $50-$90 bucks. Plus the jack on a flexible pcb, if I remember, chances are the shop broke it and just don't want to deal with it anymore, or someone else been inside it, if you bought it off eBay, see it all the time with aiwa's, people love to hack those up.

Well, I got it back from the tech today.
What should I do now?
retrodos - 2011-12-28 12:18
Like I said before, you dealing with a crap tech, I would demand my money back, or threaten small claim court, then maybe he will replace it? He didn't get it that way, it sure at very least get it back the same way you gave it to him, not in worst condition !!
outland - 2011-12-28 12:27
What do I do now? It would be a shame to declare this project dead.
Perhaps one of you Stereo2go'ers can fix it?
retrodos - 2011-12-28 12:32
Check PM. Would make for a interesting video
retrodos - 2011-12-28 12:44
Can you post pictures, now that you got it back? Just want to see what this guy did to it.
outland - 2011-12-28 13:29
Sure thing, let me get the camera.
outland - 2011-12-28 13:34
Here they are.
outland - 2011-12-29 18:02
As of today, the Walkman is off to retrodos's shop.
This story may not be over yet!
I am gonna be watching this page as I have some (wm's) that need repair.
retrodos - 2011-12-29 18:14
Hopefully mot to much damage and get it working like new again.
outland - 2011-12-29 18:24
One can only hope.
retrodos - 2011-12-31 10:10
Did received it today and found the problem, wasn't the techs faults, the headphone jack just was broken, proably came loose when he change the belt, main PCB is fine do have a spare jack, sinces it pretty common part, everything else is in good condition.
outland - 2011-12-31 10:43
Well, that's great news! Does this mean that it'll be working 100% soon?
Happy new year.
retrodos - 2011-12-31 10:53
Works like new now, sound out of both sides also fixed the power saver feature, someone knew the jack was broken, as the resistor was missing and traces was jump to keep the power on. On this model power only comes on when you plug the headphones in, to save power and when you remove the headsets, their sure be no power. On the last picture below, you can see how bad the jack was.
outland - 2011-12-31 11:08
Actually, I noticed that power saver feature before it even had any problems.
In any case, thank you so much. So I guess that means it'll be coming back to me soon?
retrodos - 2011-12-31 11:12
It be posted tuesday, going to do a quick video of it on monday after new year.
And happy new year to all.

Here the video of the Sony WM-10II also show the inside of it running.
ok I was the second viewer
docp - 2012-01-01 10:00
also fixed the power saver feature
Wow! Although the wm10/20 and the wm30/10II share a common circuitry the latter didn't come with the power save feature by default...never thought of intentionally performing a 'hack' to incorporate this feature in the wm30/10II...nice to see Retrodos has done it! Neat!
Can you provide a detailed description to help out board members? I'll then include the info in the link on wm10 troubleshooting above
outland - 2012-01-08 10:24
So I got the Walkman back from retrodos in the mail yesterday.
It has been fixed completely.
Big thanks go out to retrodos. Not only did he manage to repair the initial issue, he did it while working around the handiwork of technicians who didn't have any idea what they were doing.
Thanks for the help from everyone, I'm very glad this story ended up having a good ending.
retrodos - 2012-01-08 15:05
Glad to see people still enjoy collecting walkmans and using these masterpieces instead of just throwing them in the landfill.

I may have a parts one with a good main PCB have look for it over the weekend. Sound like a impedance problem, what headphones are you using by chance? Could also be the cable?
