The most beautiful walkman: the WM-701S
walkman.archive - 2012-01-12 13:10
Dear members,
Some time ago I managed to get a shiny SONY WM-701S, the famous silver version of the famous too 701C. I was excited to see how beautiful this silver walkman is, and I was delighted about it. I couldn't wait to take it to the photo studio and shoot some still-life photos of it, but first try was not a sucess, as many very small scratches that were so hard to retouch. This time I tried for second time, but before I carefully cleaned it with a silver cleaner, and the results are better.
I wanted to share it with you:
Hope you enjoy!

In honour of James
let me just say - I'm about to put my 701c on eBay with headphone adaptor plug
an original case
no video
no Yoda talk

I was never convinced about the silver 701, I thought it was just an ordinary walkman with a nice coat (and a nice box). That said, a great pic can tell a different story.
Badger, are you attempting to hijack this thread in honor of James?
claret.badger - 2012-01-13 06:55
*rumbled*
I think you're on to me
walkman.archive - 2012-01-13 10:55
Yes, Agent, it's beautiful. I find the 701 some sort of mix of the smallness of the WM-10 with the feather touch of the WM-7.
although in this photo it looks so good, the reality is that every small imperfection turns out visible easily, specially when photographing.
Take a look at this shoot I took in the first session and you will see what I'm trying to say...
So I have to focus on photograph it with so many white reflections, because scuffs are visible over dark tones.
Claret: I'm sorry that I don't understand what you're trying to say. My english is not so good (my native languaje is spanish). Could you say it with another words?
claret.badger - 2012-01-13 11:10
So I have to focus on photograph it with so many white reflections, because scuffs are visible over dark tones.
Haven't you merely tilted the unit/light source?
In the "before" photo there is the slight reflection top of unit - so the exposure has been even - but like you said unflattering
Your "after" pic has direct light source from above and/or exposure for the light rather than the unit - and led to an overexposed image non?
walkman.archive - 2012-01-14 09:46
Hmmm, you're focusing on exposure, but the main problem I'm trying to show is not about it, but to light reflections and how small scuffs are clearly seen when they are over dark reflections. That's the main problem, and that's why in the second attempt I tried to fill the entire walkman with white reflections.
However, the "after" pic (I mean: the first I posted, but second I shot) is indeed exposed to the reflection itself, but this led to a properly exposed image, as you can see detail in the background and other elements (they are black).
BTW: what does mean "exposure has been even"? I don't know what "even" means when used with "exposure"... Sorry but my english is limited and if this is a special maked sentence (those that doesn't appear in dictionaries, I don't know it)

The 701S is also one of the most dificult to photograph. Not only because the reflections, but also because the *super small* sctarches that appear everywhere! There appear even those that are invisible!!
Nice, huh? ;-)

For taking these photos I've had to go to a friend's studio and then, after carefully cleaning silver and setting up the lighting, I've had to take multiple shots that I knew I'll have to blend.
For example, for making the first photo of this thread I shoo this (notice the ausence of reflections):
And then I shoot the reflections, using a small white carpet. First, left side:
Then right side:
And front side:
Blending them all carefully within Photoshop, I achieved the result.
Another example. first, main shot and black background:
Then, lef side reflection:
Right side:
So finally I've had to blend them using masks and I also had to delete the background of the others but the main shot. It's not as difficult as it seems, and this processing can be done in few time (around 15 minutes each).

For photographing such shiny gadgets it's always necessary to thoroughfully clean it before.
In fact, I do it with every walkman before taking photos, because otherwise every single micro dust is seen.
For silver I had to use that special silver cleaning liquid (you know: that one always used for that task). In spain we have one but probably it's not available outside.
