wm-f15 no play / plays to fast [SOLVED]

alex - 2012-03-29 09:00

Hi there,

After receiving the disappointment I had with my WM-EX49, I decided to search ebay for only a fully working walkman so I wouldn't have to fix it. As you can tell, that didn't quite happen.

The radio on the walkman works fine, bar the contacts of the volume wheel are a bit sad. However the tape mechanism does not seem to play. After pressing the play button (it is quite hard to press? Is this normal?) The play button dis-engages after about 1 second of playing.

If I hold down the play button the tapes sounds like it is playing waayyy to fast.

I have made a video to show the issue.

Thanks

Alex

Hi Alex, welcome to Stero2Go

Can you confirm the capstan/ pinch roller mechanism is moving freely and is clean?

It's almost replicating the auto-stop feature isn't it when play is depressed.

Hi there,

Yes the capstan is mooving freely as well as the pinch roller.

Also, after turning the speed adjustment screw all the way down. The walkman still is playing way to fast...

and yes it is very strange with it acting like the autostop is on.

EDIT: I am noticing that the pinch roller (the rubber wheel). Isn't coming down far enough to touch the capstan. When I move the pinch roller manually whilst playing the autostop doesn't kick in.....

Okay, I am just going to make a new reply rather then keep doing edits.

I believe know that the whole tape mechanism isn't coming down far enough in play. As if  I use some pressure on the playback head adjustment screw the speed becomes normal and the tape player doesn't stop.

It's more likely the black plastic part that located by the pinch roller, which engages the auto stop, it crack over time, it also could be someone took it apart and did align the links to the controls right?

I would put a claim in if the seller said it was working and sent it back, If you want a good working walkman that restored, I do sell some, not the cheapest, but also not the most expensive etheir, but do go thur them and make sure they are in good working order and replaced worn parts and belts capacitors, reason why not the cheapest. Just let me know the model you are looking for? Do also have NIB's which are alot more, or one without the box and have some for around $50 bucks, or under that will get the job done, if you are just trying to play tapes, with a reliable classic.

Good news, after fiddling around with the play mechanism last night, I managed to make the play head and pinch roller to come down all the way. Therefore restoring full playback of the walkman! Now I can look very strange walking down the streets with a walkman in my hand

I contacted the seller about the issue and she was more then helpful to help sort out the issue, we came to an agreement where she refunded half of the money I paid for it and I could keep the walkman.

Thank you for your offer retrodos, I have seen some of your restoration work on youtube (aly369) and I have to say its brilliant.

Cheers

Alex
