Got myself an Aiwa HS-G09 from the ebay last 2 weeks ago. This walkman was sold in non functional condition, so I take the chance to restore it and bring this beauty back to life.
The unit has some paint scratch off, other than that the aesthetic condition is quiet descend.Managed to touch up this with permanent marker..
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Upon disassemble of the unit found the belt snapped... as expected. .The seller had well informed about this when the auction was listed.
Unfortunately, the aging belt has left over some bad and serious goo on the capstans.
Though, had took the effort to cleanse them thoroughly.
-------------------------------------------------------
A new drive belt was successfully replaced.
------------------------------------------------------
Upon testing the unit, found the sound was scratchy and intermittent disconnected. However this is easily taken care with some contact cleaner.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Also found that the tape speed is rather fast, attempted to correct the transport speed by tuning on those potentiometer. ( Forward and reverse)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The walkman has successfully repaired and assembled and in mint condition!! The sound from this walkman packs a lot of punch with the equalizer enhancement.

Good job
It is nice to see another AIWA rescued from the broken pile. You and S2G member bub should meet up and swap notes on fixing walkman. He too lives in Singapore.
Not surprised to see that the previous owner used a white elastic band as a drive belt. Understandably this perished into a gooey mess.

Great to see another walkman person in Singapore!
Aiwas used to be quite popular here...
The closest machines I have to this is 2 J09s, 1 black 1 silver. Silver one works but exterior is not in great condition, black one needs a battery cover (have not actually took it apart yet.)

Hi Philip, wish you good luck. You may have a good chance as long as there is no major issue with the main control board. Do watch out for the delicate flex cables when you attempt to detach the board. Happy mending!

Nice walkman. I have a silver G09 and I also just picked up a black G09. They are wonderful players and the graphic equalizer makes them sound awesome. I think the closest sony I have to this player is a WM-104 which is a WM-100 with a 5 band graphic equalizer, it also sounds really good. I need to make some videos of them this Fall.
PS. It is strange to see a tan/beige colored belt. Is that the original? Also, does the thickness of the replacement belt matter on these? As far as making the mechanism move at a higher speed. Something I've wondered for a while now. Thanks

Hi David, congrats on your new G09 now you only need the Red one to complete the series. By the way the tan beige colour belt was already there when I received the unit. In fact the replacement belt was actually a bit thick, trying to make it work from what I could source from my belt inventory. Though it played well but have some minor wow and flutter, however this would be easily been taken care off if I have the correct belt size. Can't wait to see your vid on your G09!!

I just received one of these and with a new belt it's a stunner. However, I feel the head alignment needs a tweak.
