Boxed Panasonic RX-1960 and good story(mfg.83/84)

johnedward - 2012-07-25 20:13

We all love a great story and thus I shall share how I was so lucky to acquire the box and orig. unopened speakers/AC adapter recently.   About 4 years ago I was lucky to purchase the mfg. in 1983/1984 good working condition very well appointed early Walkman from Panasonic.   Two weeks ago I received in my personal email a inquiry about the RX-1960.

DO YOU HAVE A PANASONIC RADIO MODEL RX1960 FOR SALE?  FOUND YOUR INFO
ON THE INTERNET SEARCHING FOR INFO ON THIS LITTLE RADIO. THANKS  BARB

My reply was yes ( I did search under model and many of my photos and topic came up  at the top on Google ) I had this model but it was rare and it was not for sale.  She then told me she had bought at a home auction the box for this player.  When she sent me a photo I fell out of my chair .... WHAT !!! it came with speakers ??   Sadly the Walkman was missing but the speakers were still in the orig. plastic bags yellowed tape never opened!  When I said mine was not for sale she said if I wanted what she had to make an offer.  Well I told her that it was not worth much without the Walkman and she reluctantly agreed to sell it for $20 plus shipping.   Something I never thought to have after owning the player many years out of the blue am contacted by email with the glorious news of a BOX for my RX-1960.  Nice to have the treasure find me

The player interestingly has a jack for EXTERNAL SPEAKERS showing Imp 4-8 ohm which I never thought when I got player years ago meant that it came with speakers matching to this player including same metallic silver color.  The player has separate L & R vol rotary dials, a stereo mic jack, tape counter and built in stereo mic plus lights in red showing FM Stereo , Batt and Rec.  VERY LOW SERIAL # 02527.  A well built player right down to a smooth opening and solid feeling door.  Although made of plastic it has a much higher quality feel, build and look than say the Sony WM-4 or WM-1.  The box is beautiful blue over silver reflecting shiny foil which makes photographing very challenging.  The photos of box do not do its beauty justice.

How COOL is this an original newspaper ad from Anchorage Alaska dated March of 1984 showing a retail price for the RX-1960 of $ 179.95 !   Panasonic packed a lot of features into this very competitive priced player AND added speakers and the AC mains adapter with headphones.

Here is link to my topic Panasonic the Early years 1980 -1985 showing 15 models from my collection.

Sadly when I took it out of showcase and powered it up the belt broke    Can anyone tell me if this player is easy to replace the belt on or does the pcb need to be de-soldered or mechanical parts removed.   I would like to put belt on myself but cant solder and prefer not to take mechanics apart.  Thanks for any advice.

cant help you with your belt question --'

just want to agree about the beauty and quality feel of the 1960-

i have had mine --with those same speakers for a decade --love it !!!

Probably the nicest early Panasonic.

Amazing story, John. I've inherited my dad's set, complete with box, all in pristine condition.

To redbenjoe, The belt on mine is seriously degraded, and causing unacceptable flutter in playback. So, I'm carefully disassembling, and no, desoldering is not required. The motor can be twisted out after loosening some screws. I just need to find a replacement belt.

we all like a good story!  I almost fell out of my chair when I saw this trio!  I  recognized them from this post.  Very powerful and the highest quality! This set looks great in pearl white and has extras like dual volume controls and stereo mic. They do not build them like they used to!!!

That is a grand find to be sure.  Looks fantastic in white and great condition too.  Certainly a very rare item to own.  Thanks for adding to the topic.

I just finished the re-belting of this beast!  It takes 2 belts, 5.0 and 5.5! No soldering required but lots of pieces. Make sure you take out all selector swiches before you replace the rear cover and slide them back in one at a time.  And keep track of the spring that latches the cassette door locked.  Just remember,it did not work before you worked on it so if you dont fix it you are no worse off!   Dean
