PANASONIC RX-DS650 Platinum Collection 2 DAC CD

johnedward - 2012-10-06 12:41

Well slowly building up a few boomers.   I love the 80's tall or squarish long boxes, not a fan of the eggo style boomboxes.    It is in very good condition but not mint.  Everything works great except the tuning needle does not move but you can tune stations fine.   I am VERY impressed with the high quality of the sound especially mids, highs and vocals.   Even though it has 6 1/4 woofers the bass is not pounding but accurate.  Would have though low bass be better.   I was impressed that it has 2 DAC ( Digital Analog Converters) which seems pretty rare on Boomboxes.  Specs show 30 MPO and 60 PMPO although it does not play loudly.   Maybe it was this design that focused on accurate high fidelity sound but am disappointed that it does not go louder.  Dont get me wrong it plays pretty loud but not a box for a party outside.  Anyone know much about these maybe my amp has  problem?  Although it sounds really excellent and everything works great.   Interesting the bass port exits around the tweeter so there is not a extra big hole on front which I really like. You can really feel the air movement pushing out if you hold hand in front of tweeter.

Just learning about these toys ( been Walkman guy for years) but I think Panasonic's Platinum series was one of there better boxes made although research I did shows several Platinum series boxes only have 4 3/4 woofers vs. this box has 6 1/4.   Weight is on the lighter side being 15 pounds ( 7 kilograms) without 10 D batteries which I like easy to move outside etc. vs my JVC DC7 at 40 pounds.   Dimensions are 27.75 in x 9 in x 8.5 in LxHxD

( 702mmx229x271mm ).

What can you pros tell me about this box?

There were 3 other models made in the PLATINUM COLLECTION can anyone list those model numbers??

They came with a heavy thick metalized sticker in Gold with PLATINUM COLLECTION printed on it in Black.

I particularly love this model because of the ANALOG TUNING DIAL and although it has a CD player its mostly squarish in shape.  Believe the other 3 models in this series had digital FM tuning in a LCD display.  Mine has LCD Display only for CD player.

There are a number of RX-DS models that are NOT Platinum series even though some look much like my RX-DS650.

other platinum ( non bi-amp ) models included the 900 and the 950 -

agree how unique the 650 is --because of the single deck and the analogue

tuner -

and the sound is QUALITY

how dare they "never call it a boombox"

This is my rx-ds660 and his little brother rx-ds20, both operate with the same remote control. Very good sound, but but you can't listen it above 5 in a 10 number volume scale, above 5 it's starting to distort the sound, same as JVC-PC-V2. Jvc PC-X200 can play music louder with good quality and bass.
