The NEX-5 is a decent camera. It has a good, large sensor and, thus, much better image quality than other point-and-shoot cameras.

What you need is a better light. Specially, more quantity. If you want an advise and you are searching for a good home light, get yourself a 500W halogen light for garden like this:

Just point it to the ceil and... that's all! The 'magic' will appear instantaneously. You can place the walkmans in a table or in the floor and the light will be abundant and of very good quality.

This lights cost around 30 euros.

you even don`t need much light for nex5, when you`ve got good lenses... its a camera which can do the same job like a dslr, with a smaller body. this is what i shot with nex5 at night, handheld without tripod, out of cam... love this cam, i use it for filming too..
