Help I may have blown or damaged my grado Rs1

radio.raheem - 2011-04-15 13:37

Been using my grado's of late with no problem....anyway I decided to use them on my stack system (better than most) The volume was only on low but i had all the sub bass friquancies on low(starting from 15 hz) basically i have 2 12 band eq's rigged to my amp....my problem is one side of my grado's I have noticed a mild rattle in the sound...These cans do sound phinominal but the rattle is bugging me..

Is it possible to take these apart if so how?i have one theiory that is...these are basically open back headphones and im thinking something may have entered the housing through the back..can anybody recommend how I can get the dust out??

Failing that im not sure what to do if the driver is damaged because i bought them about a year ago from ebay...please help???

radio.raheem - 2011-04-15 14:06

Also I have noticed that I can shake the headphone then use them and the rattle is no longer there...but sometimes the rattle comes back im sure or i hope there is something in there that's not meant to be there...If so how can I remove it?

19lexicon78 - 2011-04-15 14:21

it's a hair

radio.raheem - 2011-04-15 17:18

Im pretty sure now it's the driver as the rattle has worsened....what the heck can i do now??? i have taken the pads off listned to the driver not on my head same thing im going to try a vacume cleaner as a last resort...but i dont have one...i wouldnt care i know the bass was in subsonic but the volume was only on about 2 and a half so i think tha'ts the end of my grados... damn

bub - 2011-04-15 18:04

That sounds terrible. Chances are you'd have to replace that driver, but a replacement might mean that one side may sound different than the other- due to break in wear and such.

Here in my country there are dedicated headphone shops that do repair, so you might want to find one, but chances are if the driver is bust not much can be done.

brutus442 - 2011-04-15 18:06

I think a very careful dismantle may be needed Radio Raheem. I'm assuming that they are no longer covered by the factory warranty so...

The other option is a factory approved repair shop...but no doubt that's going to be lottsa $$

Let us know how it turns out..

radio.raheem - 2011-04-15 18:56

hi guys panic over i think i tried my other headphones no where near as expencive as the grado but yes they do sound way better,,wich is pretty unbalivable....and basically the bass is so powerful and low i doubt many have heard bass like this...anyway these technics can handle anything i throw at them...always have done...but my god even they were totally struggling on number 2 with full sub bass on...i havnt used this hifi build in over a year so i just forgot how bloody sublime the bass is lol....thank god the grados were only on numer 2 and a half when i was using them....anyway basically there was just far to much low bass for the grados to hande....guys id TOTALLY love you to hear the bass lol....(i doubt even hifi tom will of heard bass like this)) and he is a guy who basically says even the m90 sounds crap,,,his standards are that high....bottom lineI turned the bass down lol put the grados back on and there fine....thank god i had the tecniks to go buy as there my refrance headphones... thanks so much everyone im so relived god bless all..im so happy love ya all cheerz...panic over

I know driptip...it would have been devastating...i know the technics are better than the grado..but that's not taking anything away from the grados they sound SUPERB and are irraplacable as I couldn't afford another pair

radio.raheem - 2011-04-17 08:10

LOL...Back in the early 90's I remember the grado's at £1000...yes im nuts nicolle

tuna - 2011-04-17 08:15

Grado RS-1 and RS-2 sounded too coloured to me. Excellent dynamics but the colouration in the midrange is quite obvious and the headphones lack the ambience and atmosphere of the circum-aural headphones entirely. They are detailed yes but everything is right between your ears and nothing outside your head. In my opinion, the SR-325 offer much better price/performance ratio and as far as detail goes, they are even more detailed and less coloured.

You should try contacting Grado Labs. John (Grado) is very personable and sometimes answers email himself and I think it's worth a shot. You won't be able to replace the driver yourself because there are no drivers to be found and they are matched to +/-0.05dB tolerances so they will need to measure the sensitivity of the driver that is fine in order to provide you with a replacement driver.

walkgirl - 2011-04-17 10:36

1000???????

you have a container full of portapro's for that money!!

radio.raheem - 2011-04-17 11:06

Nicolle type in gradrs1i on ebay you will see...and that's a cheap pair of headphones as far as grado goes....

Remember those sony headphones I wanted well a pair sold for over £1500 last year and that's second hand..lol

hi tuna,,,Im not realy a hifi purist like some...my hole hifi probbly cost £500 for example I have 2x 12 band graphic eq's on my rig...there are just too many contributing factors for me to consider....all i can say is there arn't many hifi that can put out the sub bass mine can for that money...but I hear you it's all down to personal preferance I guess..I mean to me my greado's sound great on a walkman or my hifi...and like i have stated I have a pair of cheap 80's technics headphones and to me they sound even better than the grado's...If i want an outside experience or wide sound with my grado's all I have to do is turn on my speakers at the same time while using the grado...

walkgirl - 2011-04-17 11:17

I think once you did hear a portapro you never want such a silly expensive one!!

radio.raheem - 2011-04-17 11:21

Like I have said if there that good i will buy a crate of them no kidding...im always braking or blowing up headphones..not many can handle my hifi REALY

tuna - 2011-04-17 12:21

I think when it comes to realistic performance, there is no personal taste. But if it is "bass" you're looking for, then I suggest you try Denon AH-D7000. What are the technics headphones you are using? I had a RP-F30 which were dual driver configuration which was absurd for full-size headphones.

radio.raheem - 2011-04-17 16:02

Hi my trchnic are dual driver configeration...eah x250  and i dont need any more bass lol there an old 80's pair of headphones..I actually have 2 pairs of them..

tuna - 2011-04-18 09:22

Just don't exaggerate in volume. Hearing damage is cumulative and usually is not even noticed till it's too late. Bass (or frequencies lower than 150Hz) are something that human ear is not very sensitive to. Two different tones - say a 150Hz and a 5kHz equal in loudness won't sound equally loud to you. The higher tone will be louder to you. So, since you're listening to a lot of bass-driven music make sure you listen at moderate levels or otherwise you risk hearing damage. Bass might be perceived as less loud and as such "less fatiguing" when in fact it can be just as hazardous. I  might sound like the "instruction manual" of the headphones you've just bought but trust me, I know what I'm saying. Something to think about.

radio.raheem - 2011-04-18 11:36

thank you tuna I hear you my friend.....my 15 hz frequancies are totally over the top and quite oftern TOTALLLY overpower the music but i like it this way...i never thought 15 hz could damage my hearing but lets just say my grados can't handle it at 2 and a half or the technics..so i guess i will keep the volume down especially when amping these frequancies...I don't realy like ultra loud music so the volume dosen't go past half way and hardly use it at that...mind you half way on my amp is way louder than any walkman i have owned.. so yess ill keep the volume down...

Hi Tuna I listened to the Denon AH-D7000 a few weeks ago at the Heathrow hi-fi show. Wow I have to say what a pair of headphones from high notes to the low notes it’s all there. Incredibly smooth it was doing everything effortlessly and the midrange just shines. Like you said the bass is there in abundance, tight and fast and non of that flabby bass that hangs around dominating and ruins everything else in the mix.

I check the price a few days ago and the RRP is £900, worth every penny if you have good equipment to make them shine. iPods and lesser equipments need not apply.

Radio Raheem going up to halfway on the volume control is just asking for trouble.

Most amps have used all their useful power before halfway, very good amps may get to the 2 o’clock mark. After that all you are doing is adding distortion to the sound and distortion will damage your hearing quicker then a loud clean sound.

If you can listen that loud you may have already damaged your hearing.

Your probbly right my friend I used to listen to amps at 200w rms yrs ago you could hear my music over a mile away lol but as i say the volume normally sits at 2 n a half wich isn't loud by my standards....i remember hearing an amp back when i was 20 on my top sony cans cant remembe the cans but they go for a fortune now..but my point is i litrall shat my self the music was that loud on these cans and that was only half way it was unbelivable...but yup i dont have my amp that loud any more..im getting old and mellow and just dont like loud music...but your right i should think my hearing is severley damaged after all the loud music i have heard...

radio.raheem - 2011-04-19 06:34

Well i had my porta pro...clarity  exellent everything else dont know what to say

blaster - 2011-04-19 17:46

I agree with nicole...I've been using and been a fan of porta pros since they came out in 1984...to me they're the best sounding cans....yeah i've tried many headphones and i listen to them for a while and months and when i go try my porta pros for a spin i say wow what a difference...i own several other kinds of koss headphones they're awesome as well and affordable...

retro - 2011-04-19 18:21

I also love the porta pros, but my favorites are the rare Sony MDR-D77's, I have three and a D-55.

radio.raheem - 2011-04-19 18:46

I can think of 3 things-------------..eather mine are fake, changed desighn... or my ears are not the right size, shape for them..otherwize im not shure..

radio.raheem - 2011-04-19 19:53

tried them again it's my ear lobs if thats what you call them....there too big...if i push the phones against them hard...they sound amazing.....so it's just there no good for me...what a shame

blaster - 2011-04-19 20:13

I have tried that...im not shure how it works...it seems to do nothing

walkgirl - 2011-04-20 12:47

You can bend them a bit inwards!!!, I did that too, otherwise I would lose them or so

Tell me if it was a success!!

walkgirl - 2011-04-20 12:49

Oh yes, forget those upper foam pads, they are there for show or so as I cannot

get them to sit on my temples

Or my head is egg shaped

What are you saying nicolle...Take the ear pads off???

radio.raheem - 2011-04-20 13:06

Took those pad things off...it has improved thing a little...I WISH i could say these headphones were as good as my others but there NOT...but for £15 you can't complain the trebble is sweet and airy and they have a nice sound....I mean it costs nearly £15 for a pouch of tobacco these days...so on the whole these are great for the money.. Too ad to the fact that they dont fit my ears dosn't help eather

walkgirl - 2011-04-20 21:46

not the earpads but the litte ones above them!
