That pioneer gear is WOW...thanks for sharing
metad - 2012-04-14 07:26
Achillesaero,
I can see on the last picture, you have a Sharp RT-3388.
Would you please describe the sound compare to Pioneer's,
yes I know it's silly to describe by words the sound, but I never heard Sharp/Optonica decks, and would love to know your, "Pioneer" man, opinion on it.
Thanks
achillesaero - 2012-04-14 11:28
The Sharp Optonica has a more clear crisp playing sound, than any of my Pioneer decks, Pioneer decks seem to play somewhat slower for some reason even though I have replaced all the motors with rebuilt ones and all idler wheels and belts, I think because it has more recent technology with computer components inside that makes this a top favorite by music fans and as complicated as it looks, its very simple to operate, at first with all the buttons they scare you but with time there very self explanitory and easy to use. Thanks Mike
achillesaero - 2012-04-14 11:32
Also the CD deck and Laserdisc player were your standard black face models, I have removed the faces on both, mask the buttons and sprayed the faces with Chromate silver metal enamel to give the appearance of a aluminum metal look on front. Mike

wow, you got cool F-900 and F-1000, both have slightly better frequency response, but Sharp, by your words sounds more clear, nice to know Optonica decks not that bad as some people say.
Thanks a lot

That Panasonic is a 1pc 'cassiever'.
The illusion that there's a separate tuner, amp & twin tape deck is going so well until you see the headphone socket...

TAPE DECK
DENON DR-M30HX
NAKAMICHI LX3 (1981) owned since new, often use my WM-D6C for recording also
YAMAHA KX-W282 (1994) Double cassette deck for copying
COMPACT DISC
dbx DX-5 (1990) Awesome sounding with ultra unique compression/expansion circuits adjustable with meters.
Features 3 unique dbx signal-processing circuits built in :
DAIR, Digital Audio Impact Recovery, a 2 band design for adding impact to musical transients.
COMPRESSION control, also a 2 band design, for background listening, making car cassettes and easier
taping of CD's.
AMBIENCE control, for adding and subtracting difference information in the midrange and treble, increasing
/decreasing the spaciousness of sound.
THE Ambience is the most wonderful feature it adds a analog vinyl record smoothness to sometimes harsher
digital sound depending on recording on CD's.
SOUND PROCESORS
dbx 224X (the 224X-DS more specifically designed for recording tapes while the 224X more designed for decoding of my favorite dbx discs most awesome sound source available period IMO, Both good for creating hiss-less cassette tape recordings but 224x-DS is more flexible for tape creation) definitely better than dolby C.
dbx 2015G (1988) 15 band/channel Equalizer unique lower frequency one half octave equalization.
johnedward - 2013-04-17 06:31
The dbx DX5 CD player 1987 to 91 really can add a analog softness to the sometimes harsh digital sound of many CD's. I love this machine !!! Makes great recordings onto metal tapes with the Denon. Certainly there are higher end tape decks but since I use my cassettes for my Walkman only a handful of Walkman such as the DD9 or DC2 which I have could take advantage of higher end decks recording ability and be able to hear even a slight better sound.

this is a formiddable post!so many beautiful systems there that the eye cant concentrate on any one thinghave a preference to the seventies layouts, and am going to save up and start scouring the carboots for a vintage system this year.no rush,it can take as long as it does to get the right bitsbut so many systems here, and thanks for sharing all of this
spaceboy - 2013-04-25 08:45
I'm putting a Marantz system together with some old vintage tuners and amps, love my 2110, here's a vid of one in action love it
nickdoofah - 2013-06-04 17:14
i have only one hifi seperate left from the 80's which i got new in 1983 & would never part with it - my beloved technics M255X cassette deck - almost overengineered it has a huge tape transport mech a massive heavy flywheel, it's one of the few cassette decks i have ever seen where all the inside is taken up - most have loads of air inside!
it's still used for quality accurate rips to the computer & it still reproduces staggering detail & frequency response even now!
new belts main motor & head replaced in 1994 & it's still as good as it was when new - they were built to last back then
i think i'll be buried with it one day lol - my fave possession i think
johnedward - 2013-06-04 17:29
Thats a nice and Unusual deck, it has dbx noise compression/expansion capability which is far superior to dolby B or C. Do you use it much what do you think of the total silence dbx can impart on a recorded tape? Am a big fan of all things vintage dbx. www.vintagedbx.com great resource site
claret.badger - 2013-06-04 18:51
most Technics decks prior to 94 will have dbx
nickdoofah - 2013-06-06 16:57
i always used dolby B when recording & left dolby off during playback - this deck has such low noise levels anyway you rarely hear a hiss even on classical passeges (yes i listen to all sorts of music) as for dbx yes of course i tried it out many a time & there is complere silence where there should be, i used to just play around with it & wished i has a dbx walkman to playback recordings!!
as already stated though this recorder really is that good & what continues to surprise me is recordings i made 25 plus years ago (always on chrome basf tapes) still deliver an amazing frequency response today.....most of those tapes are just thrown in a box & have travelled wherever i have!
it's a testament to how bloody good matsushita produced products used to be - sadly not anymore & the technics brand long gone too now
