FILE - Homemade Amp 1.avi

This is one of my personal project back in 15 years ago, the home made integrated amplifier. Specification of the unit and set-up as follow:-

1) Stereo integrated amp with 50Watts per channel

2) Tone control bass and treble

3) Power amp circuit construct using discrete components. ( Vero board built up )

4) 3 Audio RCA inputs with selector switch

5) External power input. (unable to squeeze in the transformer due to the slim casing)

6) Anodized Aluminum casing

7) Drive 1 set of Yamaha 3 way speaker ( floor stander type )

* You can watch the video attached on the demonstration of the amplifier.

Hey Ken,

Nice little project that. How does it sound and what kind of speakers are you driving?

claret.badger - 2012-07-22 11:20

question

why did you use spring clips for the speaker terminals?

surely a nice sturdy set of binding posts or 4mm bananas would have made more sense?

Hi Nah D,
As stated in the spec above, I set up using a pair of Yamaha floor stander, 3 way speakers. The sound is quite decend with mellow bass and ear soothing high frequency. You can watch the video clip attached. But the video could not replicate the sound reproduction as I shot this video using a mobile set.

Hi Claret,
I thought about it later after that. I will attempt to replace it with a set of banana socket to improve contacts. Thanks for the advise.

Looks great Ken80's, and i agree with the others about the binding posts.

reli - 2012-07-22 18:05

what's wrong with spring clips?

retro - 2012-07-22 18:18

My speaker cables have bannana clips on both ends, and don't fit in push terminals.

ken80s - 2012-07-22 19:37

Binding post connector output to speakers will give best and neat contacts.

Fantastic work Ken,

I can see the heat sinks and the side vents, How hot does that unit get after operating for an hour say?

Hi Brutus,

In fact beside the heat sinks and side vents, the aluminum casing itself actually act as a heat dissipation element for the darlington transisitors. You can feel the warm from the entire base of the casing after a while the unit in operation. It could go for a couple of hours in half of the volume without burning out the transistors.

Hmm, my Marantz 2275 has them

not a cus or a slur on you

but then your Marantz is a lower end bit of kit

Things that make a decent amp stand out are:
Heavy duty binding posts
HEAVY IRON - ie transformers
Dual Power supply

similary - speakers made with spring clips are generally meh

likewise bass reflex is a sign of cheap method to extend bass response - with a few exceptions

claret.badger - 2012-07-23 17:52

although i'll add - I really like vintage Marantz kit
by chance I got a black face Techincs SA 700 - and it's fairly comparabe to a mid range marantz

My Marantz 4400 Quad has spring clips

The Yamaha NS-1000 has spring clips

The Sansui BA-2000 has spring clips

A lot of high quality valve amps of past have used barrier strips, not banana plugs even know the banana plug was invented back in the 1920's

ken80s - 2012-07-23 21:29

There is no golden rules of what type of connectors to be used as there is always options for preferences. Both have its advantages and disadvantages,

1.  For easy and fast set up, spring clips will be a good choice.

2.  To avoid potential of loose contact, go for binding post

3.  Potential of external shortage on both terminals due to negligence in handling will be likely on the binding post

and etc....

The Maranatz quad was hardly hi end - just hi tech (with everything on it plus more)
The Yamaha NS-1000 is a classic - but check the forums an ebay - everyone retro fits binding posts to them for the reasons I already posted.

Listen - it's not the last word - its just a general rule
Also it's just an opinion on the internet

Speaker cable was bell wire back in the day - so spring clips probably sufficed - but they break, they're too small for some users and they just stink of cheapness
