Your DAT recorder/player, or DAT walkman!!

retrodos - 2012-12-01 11:34

Figure see how many people collect, or use DAT recorders, or own one and differents models out their. DAT sure have replaced cassette and minidisc, but due to high price as imposed taxes on DAT recorders and blank media. RIIA, as the organization threatened legal action against any manufacturer attempting to sell DAT machines in the US.

Here one of my favorite units as it reliable and direct drive with full size head, also did some upgrades to it.

I use a Tascam DA 20 MKII for recording duties and a Sony WMD-DT1 for DAT2go.

Panasonic SV3800 pro DAT - NO security protection multiple copies enabled
Nabbed from a studio throwing it out -for 30 quid - which seems to be the goig rate for these industry standard beasts (which DO NOT have phono only XLR and Toslink) - this came with the remote which seems to go for 60!

Silly fiddly D3 which you cannot get rechargable batteries for!

Japanese DTC 55ES - minter - works 100v so fine for me here in the US
I got a UK one as well

Hens teeth Optical I/O and remote for ALL Sony Walkmans new in box!

I love the sound of DAT recordings - they have  a "life" and "air" around them that is sadly absent in other digital mediums I have heard thus far -- PCM minidisc is not bad though

Love it guys, I'm also considering a DAT home/portable combo in the near future.

nak.d - 2012-12-05 19:36

Claret, these are great. Loving that CR-3 surreptitiously making an appearance. The panny's are almost criminally low in price given build and sound (never had one but have read up on them a fair bit). That Optical I/O and remote kit looks really useful, clever stuff.

claret.badger - 2012-12-05 19:43

notice mine is a 3E not 3A

240v for most of my gear here

I've got a Sony ES Tape deck - but I left it in Blighty - the Nak is a far superior deck

I'd say go for a panny if one comes up for cheap - the unlimited recording ability makes it a must for recording

If by unlimited you are referring to the dreaded SCMS then yes, a strong point! My neighbour came up against it when compiling his latest album, culled from several "session MD's" (it's his own work but copy protection doesn't consider who owns the copywrite). My DA20 MKII also has an SCMS off switch

claret.badger - 2012-12-05 19:52

I heard that some Tascam gear had that

If there is no E or A designation does this mean it's 240V? I think A is American and E is for Europe...but no letter?

claret.badger - 2012-12-05 22:18

never seen no letter - maybe world/multi voltage?

have a sony pcm 7010. unfortunate, never used it, so the oil is hard and need to replaced.

a portable sony d100.

i like the sound of DAT, but the tapes are too expensive.

Once you've heard what DAT can do, suddenly any lossy format seams dull and moribund by comparison. My X series Sony MP3 does what it can with impressive results...but DAT has a class that is hard to match.

claret.badger - 2013-04-05 23:10

First impressions are of another NON fatiguing amp sound

unlike MP3/ipod which make my head hurt

claret.badger - 2013-04-14 23:54

Oh man I want one of these

nak.d - 2013-04-15 05:26

RE Alpine ICE. That's pretty horny for a late eighties job.
