power amps.

who owns them and which ones do you like?

i have a studer a68, looking for a 2nd one.

bryston seems to have great ones. if i didn't had an a68, i would go for the 7b's.

but that's an overkill using jbl gold's..

there have been some topics on home sound systems members have.  Here is good link to a topic showing what equipment members are using at home mostly of course Vintage from 70's and 80's.

System I am using is page 2 of the topic below.

My Amps are the following

HAFLER 500 (1981)   255 watts/Ch 8 ohm   ALL Hafler equip. owned since new

HAFLER 200 (1981)   100 watts/Ch 8 ohm

HAFLER DH-110 PreAmp(1981) Factory built and modified/upgraded 1990

KENWOOD BASIC M1D  (1988)  125 watts/Ch 8 ohm

Since this is primarily thankfully a Cassette tape driven forum would be appropriate to include my recording studio at home used to make tapes.

dbx , Denon, Yamaha and a Sony Biotracer turntable with Ruby dynavector moving coil cartridge.

hi john,

this is the home audio gear chat area

portables, after 11-12 years you know what's good and not.

time to move to the next level...

hafler made some good amps.

what's the difference between the 200-500?

the 7000 and 9505 seem to be good ones, looking for these for some years. but here in the netherlands they are rare.

special dolby equipment, does it make a difference?

For me one of the very best power amps is made by Halcro. I heard their Pre/Power combo driving some Cabasse Karissima speakers plus a top end turntable (unsure make/model) at one of the Bristol Hi-Fi shows a few years ago. I have listened to quite a few systems in my time at shows, home and stores. This was the only one that managed to acoustically disappear, leaving the music hanging in the air.

Also worthy of mention, was the ProAc (small speaker, possibly the Tablette) and a Sugden amplifier pre-power system. This was the most enthralling system I've ever heard.

hi Nak D,

in what range are those amps $$$$?

those small speakers are looking good.

The Halcro package was approx £26K in memory serves. The Sugdens would run you around £6-7K. Regarding the speakers I've yet to hear (or can't remember hearing!) the bands you mention, but I think they'd give them a run for their money.

that's way out of my league.

for that amount i would go for geithain

for 26k and more, mbl

The Hafler 500 is 255 Watts/Ch

The Hafler 200 is 100 Watts/Ch

both have if remember right about 30% dynamic headroom which is a significant amount of clean short burst reserve power above continuous rating.  The 500 is a beast and sonically amazing still to this day.   The 200 is the ulitimate work horse as mine has NEVER been serviced or failed in any way since new in 1981 considering I used it a lot and starting 2002 it became my main front speaker amp for TV surround sound system and I watch TV avg. 2 hrs a day...

The dbx is SUPERIOR to dolby B or C systems.   The dbx recorded vinyl has the greatest dynamic range of ANY recording media !  Here is link that gives a lot of detail on dbx equipment.  For portable Walkman dbx made a portable decoder so you could use dbx recorded tapes in Walkman.  Very rare to find.  Only two Walkman models were made with dbx noise reduction system mostly due to expensive then encoding equipment such as the 224X I have.  Also once a tape was encoded with dbx signal to play it on any Walkman or deck not having dbx decoding system the sound was very compressed and flat sounding.     Where you can record dolby B and play it on player not having dolby and it will sound ok not true of dolby c encoded tapes played on non dolby equipment gives a breathing effect to sound as in slight raise lowering of volume.

hafler made some good amps.

after 30 years, i think every amp needs new caps.

which vinyl albums are recorded dbx? or is it only special edition?

dbx is better than b and c.

what's the difference between dbx en dolby-s?

transwave5000 - 2013-04-10 17:03

Back in the day I built my own power amp

New ones were much too expencive to buy

It put out some 300 watts per channel

For $50 cost of parts

Used a bridged output

cooling fan

and had large VU meters.
