nickdoofah - 2013-06-07 15:51
found on the bay for a tenner & very good condition, no damage whatsoever
it came with a pair of goodmans "power series PQ 130's" 3 way uk built speakers!
8 inch drivers need refoaming or replacing - not a problem i'll do em as i want to use them as main pair for my dolby surround tv amp!
main unit really nicely made - all it needs is a turntable belt, cassettes are fine with no isuues

A Tenner! Real steal!

you cant beat that for a tenner ! the goodmans speakers look similar to the jamo ones of the same period .
nak.d - 2013-06-08 04:24
For £10 that's a nice bit of fun! Cool speakers too (that's your tenner right there before we get to the Music Centre). I still miss my Ferguson Stereo Master, slightly cheesy name but very well built (brass inserts for supporting PCBs etc). Had a nice sound.
Looks like the speakers will need re-foaming but maybe worth doing? Take a look here for ideas.
nickdoofah - 2013-06-08 09:16
haven't decided whether to refoam or just replace the woofers - what do you guys think? they are the forerunners to the very popular jamo range - & the condition is amazing how could I not keep these speakers! when I had my repair shop in the early 90's there were replacement drivers of all sizes available for very little cost - I guess I could find some online, as I say I will use these to replace the tiny sony's fr main left and right tv sound
deliverance - 2013-06-08 09:31
personally i would re-foam them nick .
litfan - 2013-06-08 14:30
Nice machine. I once got a 3750, off barnsley second hand market, for £5. I remember, vinyl, sounding gorgeous on it. Fired up my panasonic sg6070, after 7 years last week. It wasn`t very happy about it, as, it`s developed a few faults.
litfan - 2013-06-08 14:53
If i were you. I would get some better speakers. Goodmans, have never appealed to me. I had several pairs, in the 80`s. Get some missions, ar`s, etc. There are some good one`s on fleabay. Look out, for the mission 700LE`s.
litfan - 2013-06-08 14:56
These are the ones i mean, but, i have seen them go cheaper.
Just looking at the auction though. They are a bit tatty.
radio.raheem - 2013-06-08 14:59
very nice nick...wish i had the room for something like that..
lit i had a set of mission 753 check em on the bay...very powerful but not much low end....i scrapped em...still have the drivers though
litfan - 2013-06-08 15:03
Any missions are good lad. I`m still using my 780`s, that i got about 20 years ago. They are on atacama stands, filled with lead shot. They`ll be there, til the house get`s knocked down, coz, you can`t shift em.
radio.raheem - 2013-06-08 15:10
heres the ones i had lad.....cabs were real wood...threw em out....bass wasn't good...still have the drivers..
litfan - 2013-06-08 15:23
Nah. not for me. To get the full potential from these, you need a massive room. It`s like, driving a ferrari, in the UK. All that power, going to waste.
radio.raheem - 2013-06-08 15:34
there misleading rich only 5 inch drivers my technics are the same size and are way better than the missions....all the reviews say the bass rolls off at 70hz....but did i read the reviews first nope grrrr........i like powerful bass at 30 hz and below
brutus442 - 2013-06-08 16:40
I have to say I've had incredible luck with Toshiba products and their reliability. Great score for a tenner!!
nickdoofah - 2013-06-09 16:38
yeah i was weaned on top notch hifi esp the likes of linn audio the sondek turntable naim amplifiers isobarik speakers etc
the old 60's &70's goodmans were a different story altogether up there with wharfdale & the other uk brands - i have to say that all the so called "high end" gear never really did it for me & still doesn't, too many wild claims & silly write ups even by the cream of the hifi press. they used silly words & situations etc i'm sure some of you will know what i mean
the mission 7 series has long had a huge following too i am well aware of them & probably too good for what i want eg: decent telly sound & abilty to pump out mp3's from my hdd recorder with plenty of bass - & anyway i have to save these early 80's speakers lol prob with a couple of 90db sensitivity 8" replacement drivers.....the tiny sony's used on tv at moment were £3 off the tip ten years ago & they are good for a pair of discarded mini system speakers!! will use them on the toshiba music centre!
i used to be so much more "into" hifi i guess til the late 90's when my technics system was rarely used & all that "special low loss" cable trends kind of died out along with gold plated oxygen free interconnects etc....really lost interest in all that when i bought the mighty logitech Z2300 2.1 speakers for the pc - now they are awesome & surpass anything i have ever heard for a pc set of speakers.....the bose equivalent came close but even they ain't as good as the Z2300's i guess that's why it's taken me so long to start collecting the stereo's that i always loved.....big silver japanese boomers! & the odd item i have no roon for too
nickdoofah - 2013-06-09 16:41
btw what about the wharfedale E series speakers?
any of you familiar with them?
i'd love a pair of E70's or even more so the E90's
very rare in good condition nowadays sadly there really are not that many left now
andyboombox - 2013-06-10 02:42
this looks a nice, well built unit, fully featured too,had a few music centres in this ones style and they really do kick some buttthe speakers can be replaced,or refoamed no problem, quite a find you have there
isolator42 - 2013-06-10 06:30
Wharfedale's E-series speakers are generally good quality, easy to drive (sensitive), but can be a bit OTT for some people. Best description of the sound is "the opposite of laid-back".
I have a pair of Wharfedale Vanguards, which are mid-late 80s successors to the E70, & I love them. Definitely no sub needed in the home cinema set-up. Very clear, detailed & 'grown-up' sounding... with the added feature (as all E-series) of being incredibly loud & able to take an awful lot of volume for sustained periods. My brother had some E45s & they took one hell of a pasting too
nickdoofah - 2013-06-10 13:43
yeah def very sensitive great for parties & i still crave a pair of 70's or 90's for myself
i remember a review in the 90's on a pair of cerwin vega's with something like 95db sensitivity! a crazy 15" woofer etc in the cv red & black livery - would love to try a pair of them!
litfan - 2013-06-11 14:16
Can anyone remember the "studiocraft" range of speakers, from the 80s? They looked really cheaply made, but, sounded incredible. I had a pair of the mid-size ones. Don`t know, if, studiocraft, was the name of the company, or, the speaker. Badge on the front said studiocraft.
litfan - 2013-06-11 14:34
Just found this pic. Turns out, they were made by bose. This one, has no badge.
nickdoofah - 2013-06-11 16:01
bose really cracked it in the late 80's especially with it's range of speakers used in pubs & mobile disco's - they were extraordinary performers even at high volume levels & even cd's sounded good on those things (in the era when so many cd's were terrible sounding) i also remember the bar on top of my local nightclub had the sub & 4 satellite setup 2 X left & right channels - i remember hearing pat benetar pounding out of those with amazing prescence at high volume!
litfan - 2013-06-12 14:18
Pat benatar, now you are talking. These, were classics, in their day (1982+).
