Hey smeats; your school computer was relatively advanced!  Ours was an ancient Reaserch Machines (R.M.) 380z.  None of us mere mortals were allowed within three feet of it!!

We had the RML 380z as well complete with 8" floppy drive! I swear the lights in the classroom went dim when they powered it up.

I think they probably did dim Nick! I wonder if 380z's were sold to many schools? An 8" floppy ehh! That must have cost a pretty penny! I  used 8" floppies when I first started work back in 86, they, along with the PDP11 mainframe they were used with were out-dated then!

At the firm where i did my apprenticeship we had an IBM system 36 mainframe running MAAPICS. I have no idea why i remember that but thanks for helping to reassure me that i dont have alzheimers yet.

Cripes VCRs were damned expensive back in the 80's!!

Oh and I remember using a computer back at school that was programmed with those cards with holes in...seems hilarious these days

Thanks for more nostalgic gems Seb

aye the tripwire    i remember my dad buying a ferguson video star at around £500 in the mid seventies

nickfish - 2013-12-03 07:15

My Dad did not think we needed a VCR so every few months we rented one for the weekend along with a few tapes from the shop around the corner! I remember Lasky's well; I think they were a little higher up the chain than Dixons but not so good a Rumbellows! The stuff they sold was not great but at least it wasn't Matsui and Saisho garbage. We had Lewis's department store in Leicester where they sold middle to high end stuff and some great HiFi shops where my love affair with audio blossomed.

Good post Seb. Thanks.

Cheers Si. VCR's were hideously expensive back then. The only reason we had one is because my parents won it in a Christmas raffle!  It was a Sanyo VTC-5000 Betamax, would have cost £299 back in 1983 so a really lucky win!

Yeah those Bullseye prizes were a bit crap! My love affair with audio blossomed in a similar way to yours! Started off with a Sharp boom box and looking longingly into the windows of local Hifi shops and turned into the mad hobby I have now!

Talking TVs and VCRs, Video Rentals were our friends back in the day - couldn't afford to buy latest tech, so rented it instead ... lol

jt.techno - 2013-12-03 12:32

Re my first boombox, 'twas a Tosh RT-S782 ... remember it was a great box ... created many a mix tape with it as you could get seamless (click less) links between music using its pause button ... lost it in my early twenties when a mate I was sharing a house with ran off with it ... however now got another back off fleabay a few months back and it does still sound as great as I remember - great bass for a small cabinet - yet to try creating a new mix tape with it but may do so again soon for nostalgia reasons - anyway, I digress off thread subject but do remember Laskys well - great find Seb!

I'm quite a big fan of Toshiba boxes; I'm glad you managed to replace your first machine.
