Another rare model. Maxim, you sure know how to find these elusive models!

It is based on the 0ZM transport, common to models such as the JX707 and JX929. Not a very good tape transport at all in my opinion.

As typical of a low budget tape recorder, Dolby is 'Playback Only'.

correct me if I'm wrong in JX707 as well JX70 for Japan market was different transport

here more like was in px680 or 610

analog from sony was gx90 but was full plastic body

here all metal only cassette and bat cover is plastic

it is more desk than portable use but I like quality of materials and more compact desighn than sony was at that time....

PX610 and JX707 both have the same 0ZM transport. The only difference is that the JX707 has the erasure heads and therefore more similar to the TP-S101.

From various models with 0ZM transport I have seen:

- Broken tape guides on the pinch roller assembly due to brittle plastic used, leading to tape skew and eaten tape. The REV direction seems to suffer most from this

- Poorly mounted heads, leading to irregular head wear

- Loose hinges due to general wear leading to azimuth mis-tracking and W&F issues

- On the walkman units (probably not on the TP-S101) head assembly not secured properly to door leading azimuth mis-tracking and W&F issues as well

- Poor quality belts used which need to be replaced. Previous AIWA transport used more reliable belts that have not all turned to tar

- Poor quality plastics used on solenoid part that melt and deform easily

- Tortuous path for the flexible PCB at the hinge, causing it to split easily from just opening/closing door

all wm-10 20 30 belts looks like boiled oil

I never opened this 101 units so cant be shure, but exterior looks much better sony gx90

I guess you need to open this unit to get final conclusion

I have yet to replace a belt for an AIWA with the α (alpha) transport due to the belt turning to tar or 'boiled oil'.
