SONY WM-20 Pink, Ultra rare SOLD
walkman.archive - 2013-04-06 01:05
DESCRIPTION: This auction is for a used SONY WM-20 in pink color. It's a very nice cassette player with high quality metal exterior and nice finish.
This cassette player is one of the early ones and belongs to the early eighties period. It was equal to the WM-10 (the name used in US), which was the smallest cassette player at the time and still remains to be one of the smallest. The WM-20 has a retractable cassette door that makes the player even smaller when there is no cassette in the compartment. It's really remarkable what they were capable of in those days. Despite it's size, it is still a full featured cassette player that has most features that were available at the time.
To ensure compatibility with the dawn of metal tape formulations, this player was capable of playing such tapes and it also sported Dolby B noise reduction system. This cassette player would definitely be a welcome addition to any classic walkman collection. It's an extremely rare model.
- Very thin and light metal body
- Retractable cassette door that makes the player smaller when there is no cassette in the compartment
- Dolby B noise reduction
- Metal tape capability via tape EQ switch
- Runs on a single AA battery
- Made in Japan
STATUS: NOT WORKING. Unfortunately, the previous owner did not take care of this player well enough. As a result, the retractable cassette door has broken hinges and doesn't operate well. As expected, the belt has stretched due to age and will need to be replaced. Despite all of this, the player is still in good condition since there is no serious physical damage to the exterior, but the switchs that are missing. It is used but there are no serious signs wear I think and the cassette door, even though broken, still aligns with the chassis well so it doesn't appear to be broken at all. It would be great if a new owner could restore it to full function because this is a very nice cassette player and has a certain aura to it because of it's color finish and it's importance in walkman history.
