my ultimate discman
19lexicon78 - 2012-09-14 15:22
well, after all these years..
i have one discman, who rules them all...
no, it's not the d555. i love this one, the ultimate 80's one. but, it isn't sony's best design.
it's the d-j50.
sonically it s!!!s big time. but it's design.. wowwww
it's my sony's all time favo.
ok, philips and denon are soundwise far better, but they don't have this sleek design.

Wow! Beautiful D150 in white! This model is very beautiful.
I also like the D-350:
and the D515 too, which is the very first Discman to have a memory buffer for 3 sec (I think):
Do you remember those low quality Discmans that had up to 1 minute that sounded like a sardine can?
But for me probably the coolest discman of all them is the small D88. A master piece:
And it sounds so good!

the d515 is also a nice one, nice curves.
my sony trinity: 555,dj50,515
the 150 and 250 are also nice looking, still haven't one of those.
i never liked the 350, i don't know why.
the d88 is a dangerous weapon..
oja, have two d311 silver models, 3000 of those made.

Some great comments added to a great portable type of machine. Aside from the original D-50/D-5 that I admire and listen to for its unmodified digital circuit designed to just produce the actual sound only from cd not modified circuits as in most newer equipment.
I don't have some of the very top models in PCDP as I don't have a focus in this area. Worth mentioning is the Sony D-EJ885 (2003). It is just barely larger than a CD and is only 135mm X 19mm thick !! This is my most used portable that I take with me to listen to. Only downfall is the amplifier is only adequate powered does not play really loud but quality is certainly there.
Nick Jarmin on his www.walkmancentral.com site says :
"This compact disc player represents the final generation of CD-only Discman models in the luxury class. By the following year, expensive models such as this would be fitted with decoders and file management systems to play discs made on home computers containing MP-3 files, a last attempt to popularize the personal CD player whose natural bulk and susceptibility to shock made it increasingly unattractive as a portable music source. Within a short time, the personal CD player would be relegated to a level where only budget models were available, something that had happened to cassette players about ten years previously. Against this backdrop, the D-EJ885 can be regarded as almost the height of development of the CD-only Discman series."Copyright © 2005-2012 Tim Jarman and Nick Jarman. An excellent player with fiber optic digital cable out.

SONY D-EJ885
Hugo has as always taken impeccable photos of the famous smallest CD player the Sony D-88 which is legendary. I agree with you Hugo to listen to it is truly a joy and from such a small package such quality sound. Impressive engineering to say the very least by Sony. I have some of the smaller mini cd's that stay totally inside of player making it truly portable. I have it often on my office desk and it always gets comments and compliments of amazement from people seeing it playing. Probably not many know that Sony licensed CROWN to use the exact design repackaged with a slightly changed exterior as the Crown CD-10 of which I do have a Boxed example and 2nd player only as backup.
A GREAT TOPIC ON PCDP with lots of pictures of many members models at link

HERE IS A VIDEO OF A SONY D-88 boxed missing headphones only that I sold some time ago ( display partially worked). Kept my boxed example display is perfect and has orig. ear-buds which are excellent sounding. Hard to come by.
With the std. CD disc playing with a little sharpening on edge you could make use as a weapon for sure
redbenjoe - 2012-09-16 14:46
i have that cool little 88 also --
sorta love it --solid & metal & heavy
but its the least stable of any cd player i have used

Wow, John, as always you did a fantastic posting. I also know the EJ885 and I actually have one of this in white:
but my personal experience with this beautiful, thin Discman gave me no enjoyment in terms of sound quality. It looks to me that it works perfectly: all functions work as expected but I feel the music without body. I'm not sure if I'm using the proper description in english, but I mean that the music is flat, boring. And the megabass shows no good quality. To much bass, but very boomy.
A D-88, for example, sound far better without any megabass or anything. And if I connect it to my loved CMoyBB (with its bass enhancing), it sounds awesome.
I never heard about that Crown licensed discman, but I remember that brand still. Impressive collection you have John! almost every interesting unit you have it!

I have a panasonic sl-sx500, that i have had since 1990. I have listened to countless discman`s, and, this one, IMHO, is still the best I have heard. I use grado SR325`s, and, it sounds superb.
teamstress - 2012-10-20 13:22
The d-88 is cool, but seems impractical with the spinning cd sticking out. It's certainly not very portable.

right --its great to watch --but no good for anything else

Sorry to bring up an old thread but just got my hands on a D-88. Need some info on diagnosing problems. Powers up and disc spins but no sound and no display.
nevone - 2016-03-29 10:38
You need to first solve the no display problem. Possibly a bad contact, but those tape contacts are kind of tricky. If you have display and after spinning it shows the number of tracks, then you have a problem in the electronics. If it does not show the number of tracks, then you probably need to grease the mechanism that moves the lens.

excellent disciption, NEVONE, couldn't have dicribed this nicer :-)

Had a look at the mechanism that moves the lens and seems like there is a lot of grease on there. Will take the unit apart and investigate further.

Thanks for the advice. Ended up cleaning and re-greasing and now works. Although the display is not working properly. Happy that it plays!!
nevone - 2016-04-01 08:13
Well, when I bought mine the seller described the display as "sometimes working". As a matter of fact, one of the lines was sometimes missing. After I used it a few times, it begun to work fine, everytime. My tech man then cleaned and lubed everything and it is working spot on ever since.
