Hello everyone

walkingtomars - 2012-03-13 04:24

I'm new, and I've just discovered this page, and it rocks.

About me, I've been a walkman user my whole life and have only just started to realize, in this ipod world, the beauty of handheld mechanical music. Instead of interacting with a computer, its moving parts, and for some reason, that resonates with me.

My father had the original walkman, and as a child I used this from time to time.

Not until 1992, at age 12, was I allowed my first walkman. It was a very basic model, and it was discarded when in the mid 90s I got the WM-FX415.  The Mega Bass on this puts the ipod's equalizer to shame as it delivers an incredible sound, lifting the treble also. I love the radio presets, as I still enjoy the radio and like to flick between stations with ease. The digital clock also gave it a sense of being 'high tech' to me.

In 1999 I purchased the WM-EX652. I loved the slimness of this model and the touch-pad with song-search. The remote control also made me feel like I had a superior piece of technology. This sadly has stopped working and needs some screws and belts.

In 2002, I moved onto the Sony Mini-Disc player, and although it is branded as a "Walkman", don't really see it as such. Nor do I Sony's cell phones for that matter.

2006 I moved onto the Ipod nano, then nano III gen, then IV gen, the ipod touch.

The generic look of music players these days has made me look back with fondness at the walkman era, and I am now wanting to learn as much as I can.

Hello and welcome to this little part of the 'net.

Do you have many walkman, or are you about to start a new collection?

As music is an integral part of our lives it's only natural that you have embraced modern technology while not forgetting your roots.

Welcome, have fun, share story or two. Start collecting, not hoarding

walkingtomars - 2012-03-13 19:42

Thanks everyone.

Yes I would like to start a collection and have been outbid on a couple on ebay. I'd really like to get one of the 10th anniversary ones and the WM-DD9.

Until then, I'm starting a photo-collection on my PC.

I'd also recommend a dd30 or 33 as well since they also sound fantastic and pop up on ebay frequently. A dc2 is also a really nice one to get and if you see a 501 in your searches, snap it up.

I hear what you are saying about the md 'walkman'. If it doesn't play cassettes, in my mind it's not a walkman.

I agree! A walkman could potentially last 100 years, but an Ipod's battery will be long dead by then. I've had two ipods that have died before the 12 month warranty expired (luckily before). I would be fuming if my ipod dies after the warranty is up.

@mark, thanks for the advice.

Hi, Just browsing through this site, as my partner decided to list a Walkman on ebay today, having a clear out, and I never realized the demand for some of these units.    I too have a WM-EX652 in silver, and remember the day I bought it new in Dixons all that time ago, I was very proud at the time of purchase, I don't wish to part with it.

My partner is selling her WM-F701C, and was very surprised within 5 mins, people were bidding!  Anyway, I will add the link here if I'm allowed just to raise awareness to you?  As I'm curious now, can you tell me please, is this the 10th anniversary edition, and is the grey color rare compared to the black?  Please tell me your thoughts....

Mickeyboy2007, welcome to the forum but if possible can you start a new post for your sale.  Some may consider this 'thread hijacking'

mickeyboy2007 - 2012-06-04 03:04

Sorry if it seems that way, i have posted in the sale section now, but also I wanted some more info on the product, and saw it was mentioned above, so I thought maybe they could help me out with that.  Didn't mean to hijack.  Thanks for the welcome.
