Newbie Alert! Here's my boxes

renegaderacer - 2013-04-28 08:32

Hi guys and gals,

I'm Giles and I'm from Surrey in the UK. I'm into anything old school and got into boomboxes after seeing Bendycat's collection on display at a recent VW show where I was displaying some bmx's. I've collected a few off the bay but have so far had no luck at car boot sales. A couple were faulty but I've managed to take one apart and fix it (apart from the tape rewind) but the other (Philips D8678) is still in pieces, hopefully to be fixed soon! I love the later 80's designs and colours, so my first boxes are more from this era (cheaper too!). Please excuse the dirt, I haven't had time to clean them yet!

My first box, Sharp WQ-268E. This had faults which I managed to fix after taking it apart (apart from rewind). Sounds good for a small box.

My second box, Sharp WQ-268E. I really like red boxes, so had to have this! No problems and sounds great!

My third is a Sharp QT-250, again, I was surprised by the sound from a small box.

My fourth was a Philips D8678.

I have no pic of this together yet as I have it in bits as there are a few problems I'm trying to fix. Impressive looking box though and loud!

My fifth is a Hitachi TRK-W22E. This is my favourite box so far! I love the look of it and the sounds amazing!

Number six is a Panasonic RX-C34. Another nice sounding box with plenty of bass!

The seventh is a Sony CFS-1000L. Very similar to the Panasonic, not as good volume control though.

Number eight is a Sharp WQ-T231. Love the design but it needs a carry strap or handle.

The ninth one I bought is a Deccasound DCS1122, which I'm still waiting to arrive!

Number ten is a Philips D8080 Le Cube. Love the look and sound of this and it's going to be great when we go for days out in the summer!

Number eleven is Sharp QT-27. Lovely little box and sounds great.

And finally; number twelve is a Philips Cubic Compo (in red) which I'm still waiting to arrive!

Sorry the pics are blurry but I hope you like my collection so far?

Cheers,

Giles

Welcome, Mr. Giles

He's from Surrey in the UK

Ok!  So that explain's  the

( funny looking - Never seen before ) to Me

Number Ten Philips D8080 Le Cube

( like to know more of the measurements of this model )

Or just how Square this is

mark.gf575 - 2013-04-28 09:13

Nice collection, I was gonna have a pop at that Cube when it was on eBay, guess you were the winner  Liked the handy storage compartment in it.

smeats1976 - 2013-04-28 10:40

Nice to see a collection from the late 80s! its a bit different and if you're getting boxes you like cheap off ebay fair play!. Your boxes remind me of the one I had on my bedside table in the 80s except mine was a cheapy brand called susumu no one here had heard of when I asked! Hello and welcome

northerner - 2013-04-28 12:32

Welcome from the North

Keep that QT250 cos the aerial is a perfect fit for a Sharp GF9000 or GF575 when you get one I have 3 or 4 of these QT's, 1 at work and the others in the shed for parts. But for a diddy box it's pretty good sounding.

Congrats on building up your collection, need some BIG ones now

Just be careful as collecting these things can be really addictive lol

renegaderacer - 2013-04-28 16:26

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!

I certainly know how addictive these hobbies can become after getting into old school bmx's!

The Philips Le Cube is awesome! Twin speakers at the front and speakers to two other sides, it sounds great. It measures about 9.5in all round (10in if you go to the top of the buttons).

Yep, afraid that was me! The storage compartment is great. You can fit 3 cans and maybe a couple of rolls, keys, change or whatever in the other compartments.

Here's a few more pics of it.

renegaderacer - 2013-04-28 16:30

I put my Philips D8678 back together to get a pic of it. The radio works great and it's SO loud but the digital display for the radio doesn't work (think it's had it) and I can't get the tapes to work (belts are ok, I just don't know what I'm looking for!).

mark.gf575 - 2013-04-28 16:49

Maybe it needs separate batteries for it to work. ViennaSound will know, he know's everything Philips  Nice pics of the Cube too. Just needs a strap.

traveler - 2013-04-28 17:40

I just had to find this picture of this to help me understand better about the top storage compartment

PHILIPS D8080 LE CUBE stereo cassette recorder BOOMBOX 200913232173 top explained

Take and post another picture then and flip yourself around when you do so

northerner - 2013-05-02 11:44

That's a long and low one...how's the sound?

renegaderacer - 2013-05-02 12:23

Don't know yet. I'm itching to find out but the missus is watching Hunt For Red October and I might not survive if I try it out!

Always liked these. I remember seeing them in a local shop when I went into town for some grub during lunch breaks at school! Love those servo controls.

driptip - 2013-05-02 18:57

nice chrome speaker covers , it looks great.

isolator42 - 2013-05-03 05:34

Hi Giles, I'm based in Surrey too - let me add my welcome to s2g

I have more than a passing interest in the 80s Philips boomers as well, but a little earlier than yours , around 1984 ish.

Back in the day, Philips boomers were significantly cheaper than an equivalent Sony JVC Aiwa, etc. & when you're a kid paying out of your own pocket, that's important...

Your Cubic Compo (aka D8254) is a nice little machine. A servo deck & the all important Spatial control Each had a different take on the stereo expander (JVC 'Biphonic', Panasonic 'Ambience', etc.) & IMHO, Philips' Spatial was amongst the best of these.

I remember seeing them in the shops in Kingston (even Boots had an audio dept then) & it often had the silver dust-caps pushed in because you could easily touch them through the centre hole of the speaker grille - not the most sensible design...

It's nice to see a collection that isn't all 'grails' for a change.

Your collection comprises what real-world kids could afford in the UK back then.

I'm ever-so-slightly obsessed with the Hitachi 3Ds, but that's another story...

renegaderacer - 2013-05-03 11:42

I had a little chance to play with the Compo for a couple of hours today. While it was good and had some really nice features; I was expecting a bit more. The sound is crystal clear and the individual volume controls for each speaker is a nice touch if you have them apart from the main body but it's not as loud as it looks it can go. Also, I thought it'd have more bass than it did. I would also like more control over the sound adjustment. It is however very nice quality and the adjustments you do have do actually make a difference and the cassette deck is really good and I love the touch button controls on it. Overall, I'm really pleased with it (just a little louder you be nice though)!

northerner - 2013-05-03 12:25

Well sometimes it's about the sound, sometimes it's the look, sometimes it's a bit of both. One of my faves is one of my Philips D8444's (I have 2) which I modded with disco LEDs! It looks fab but sounds average...still love it tho!

bison - 2013-05-03 13:15

welcome to the forum rr,nice collection,

and Isolator i think your spot on about Philips they were THE name on the streets in the eighties in the UK..oh and my Bush 6280

stacker45 - 2013-05-04 20:10

Nice spread, i really like the Sharp QT-27.

samovar - 2013-05-05 00:11

nice collection, so personal and so clean. congratulations, and welcome to the forum

renegaderacer - 2013-05-06 15:35

Just one more for the collection. Another QT-250, this time in red (I have a thing for red boxes) to keep my white one company. I'm still impressed by now good these sound for a small, cheap box.

renegaderacer - 2013-05-07 04:16

May as well post my Deccasound DCS1122 now I've fixed the case. Just the belts to go now!

northerner - 2013-05-07 04:24

Good work on that Deccasound...I like that your collection is different to the same stuff we all (including me) go for...you're not following most everyone else...gets you a unique collection and saves you money...that's a win / win situation

john82 - 2013-05-07 04:31

Alright RR How's things pal ? I also see you have a BMX interest !!! I use to ride and am doing ups flatland bike myself. Pm some pics to me if you get a spare 5.

Cheers N!  I must admit I don't know too much about them at the moment so I'm going for ones that catch my eye or interest me in some way. I am a bit biased towards the later 80's ones as this was more my era when we started getting them to take out with us when we were bmxing or skateboarding down the park or on the streets. Bonus too that they're cheaper as well!

Alright John? Glad to see there's a few of us into bmx's too! It's great fun and very satisfying restoring bmx's but will make you pennyless!

I'll pm you some pics of mine when I get a chance.

Cheers,

Giles

renegaderacer - 2013-05-07 11:34

Another one for collection arrived today. A Sony CFS-3300L. I could've let it go but it was so cheap, I had to have it!

I've just got a few more small ones in the pipeline, then I'll have to start on some big ones!

northerner - 2013-05-07 12:20

Hope you've got a big house Giles as at the rate you're getting them you'll need one! Before you fill your house get yourself a decent quality big one from the earlier 80's and see how they compare

I think the only later 80's black one is a m

northerner - 2013-05-07 12:22

Sometimes I hate this iPhone!

I was trying to say I have a mint boxed Hitachi trk 7620 which I love and kicks a little butt...the rest are all early 80's

If you change 'house' to 'flat' then you get the idea of how much room I have left! Especially with 7 bmx's!

Luckily, I have a very understanding girlfriend who will put up with them if I put shelves up in the spare room and display them there. Looks like I'll be down Wickes this weekend then!

Definately going to get an old school monster soon too.

Hi MJ,

Thanks for the welcome!   Nice place, Hampshire. I go down the New Forest a lot. Like you say; it's good to see a bit of Southern support!

Afraid I'm rather fond of the QT27 but thanks for the offer.

Cheers,

Giles

Despite being a Northerner  I go down south quite a lot, I too go to the New Forest every year as I love the place, I even lived nearby in Bournemouth for a couple of years.  Off for a trip to Brighton in a few weeks too

renegaderacer - 2013-05-10 14:37

A couple more turned up today to go in my 'red' collection.

A lovely little Sharp QT12

..........and a wicked looking Philips Roller D8007, which unfortunately has been damaged, yet again, by Royal Mail/Parcel Farce!
