OK, so which is the smallest walkman ever made?

ao - 2009-09-30 14:08

We've discussed this a few times over the years so maybe it's time to put the records straight.

Which walkman is in fact the smallest?

Criteria
* Walkman has to play compact cassettes, no mini cassettes I'm afraid.
* Walkman is measured with bolt on battery holder if required to operate. Walkmans which also run off internal gumstick battery can be measured without bolt on battery holder.
* Overall size is calculated by volume (length x height x depth = volume).
* Protruding buttons aren't counted in overall measurements.
* Lumps & raised areas (WM-701) are included in overall measurements e.g. height is measured to top of lump.
* Units with all controls on remote only can be measured without taking the remote into consideration.

So, which are the contenders?

We can add to the list as we go on but the initial front runners are as follows:

* Sony WM-10
* Sony WM-150
* Sanyo JJ series
* Sony WM-40
* Sony WM-100
* Sony WM-701C

Now, I think I have a couple of additional contenders up my sleeve, I need to get them from the attic but be warned, you ain't seen anything like these & they meet all the above criteria, no tricks.

John, if you have any of the above, could you measure w x d x l and we'll see what we've got. Anyone else, feel free to suggest more units, folding/collapsable Tosh's & JVC's are allowed, I just can't recall the model numbers.

jazzrat2000 - 2009-09-30 15:36

I have a very small Sharp with no controls on the unit... how would that be measured (all are on the remote)? Also, a plastic one that is basically just the play head, a jack and a battery...

aa.fussy - 2009-09-30 15:48

What about the WM-FX511 and WM-EX618?

rerooted - 2009-09-30 17:59

sometime in the future it may also be interesting to see which player is the lightest.

drmr2000 - 2009-09-30 18:05

This one is then as a cassette case wm-ex921 controls is a jog control where the Sony logo flip down.

walkgirl - 2009-09-30 21:28

Smile

ao - 2009-09-30 22:18

These all look good and 'seem' to meet the criteria. Tim, I too have a sharp with controls on remote only, is it called a JP-20 or something? I also have a Panasonic Piu which also has controls on the remote. I just need to dig em out.

Nicolle, forgot the CP-88, that's a serious contender & the EX-921 is a typical 90s 'small unit but DrMR2000 you might be supprised by some of the sizes of these oldies.

So, get measuring folks!!!

mrp32dave - 2009-09-30 23:26

Just measured one of my WM-150's using a vernier:

L=107mm x H=72mm x D=21mm

a cassette measures L=102mm x H=65mm D=12mm

Must be one of the smallest that does not collapse and fully encloses the cassette.

zx280 - 2009-09-30 23:43

I think agent mentioned these Toshy KT-AS10's before. These of mine are 10 by 6 by 3. closed.Only a bit bigger with tape loaded. great sound though.

ao - 2009-09-30 23:58

OK, people, this is looking great. Just so we get the detail we need to make a decision please provide mm x mm x mm, with respect, I doubt if the dimensions of this Tosh are bang on the cm, we need mm.

So, we have our first entry

1. Sony WM-150 107x72x21=161 cm squared

zx280 - 2009-10-01 00:14

Sorry about the dimensions agent. The toshy is 102 by 65 by 28. with the tape in place..

surely that's 161.78cm CUBED?

ao - 2009-10-01 02:34

This raises an interesting question, should dimensions be based on cassette being present inside the unit or not?

Oooh, big fan of Mr Melly, but he's a bit of a potty mouth rolyateel.

skippy1969 - 2009-10-01 04:42

How about this one Agent.
It is my Kenwood CP-3X
It measures 103mm long.
20mm thick and 69mm wide.
103mmX69mmX20mm=142.14mm

drmr2000 - 2009-10-01 05:07

Believed got a Sanyo that is pretty small somewhere going to have to dig him out. Toshiba I believed made the smallest, only problem is uses external battery pack.

ao - 2009-10-01 06:44

OK, we got some more now.

In order
1. Kenwood CP-3X 103X69X20=142.14
2. Sony WM-150 107x72x21=161
3. Toshiba KT-AS10 102x65x28=185.64

Intrigued to see this Tosh with external battery pack.

elite1502323 - 2009-10-01 08:51

The measurements should include the cassette if it's a unit like the Toshiba KT-AS10 (in which the cassette protrudes). Similar for the Sony Walkman WM-10, which as you know expands to accomodate the cassette. Here is a link for the EX20.
http://servicemanuals.electron...e_player/wm_ex20.pdf

It is 78.7 x 108.6 x 18.7 = 206. Sadly, not the smallest.

mrp32dave - 2009-10-01 09:07

Sony WM-102 measured with gum stick battery pack AA in picture.

111x71x20

elite1502323 - 2009-10-01 09:23

I'm thinking that the Kenwood CP-3X or the Sanyo JJ are top contenders.

I don't have my 20th anniversary Sony Walkman EX-20 at this location for measure, but does anyone else have that Walkman? I seem to recall when we addressed this topic previously, the EX-20 was the world's smallest.
I do have the EX-20 I will measure and take pics of it side by side with the other EX-5, EX-1 EX-921 and WM-10 this weekend.

ao - 2009-10-01 09:37

Thinking about it, aren't the Kenwood and Sanyo based on the same unit?

drmr2000 - 2009-10-01 12:00

1. Sony WM-FX671 2001 junk, but is no bigger the the cassette itseft.
2. Sony WM-550C 1987 Use this guy the most, one of mine best units
3. AIWA HS-PX557 MID 90S Pretty small not much bigger then the cassette itseft.
4. TOSHIBA KT-V770 1989 Battery pack that screw in on the bottom make this guy bigger.
5. Sony WM-EX 921 2001 Small as the cassette case maybe thinner good unit overall.
6. Sony EX-20 1999 Also the same size as the WM-EX 921 very small in size no bigger then a cassette case thinner.
7. Sony WM-WE01 wireless 1999 Very rare, parents pick this up for me for my birthday new for $330 Bucks only 100 made "Prize possession"
8. Sony Tiffany edition 10th of the WM-701T very small, paided $1200 on Ebay for it. this is one of the smallest, even smaller then 20th edition. Not the best sound quality mine WM-EX1 sounds better.
9. Sony WM-701C 10th One without the wooden box, not the best sound quality mine WM-EX1 sounds better.
10.Sony WM-10 1983 Small as the cassette case,
amazing piece of art, just the way it looks and for that year was the smallest in the world use a dc regulator to step up the voltage,

Those are mine top ten smallest, will take pics this weekend side by side comparison and some measurements.

Believe have a Sanyo that was small, with full logic control, don't remember the model have to dig him out this weekend.

mrp32dave - 2009-10-01 12:35

Here's pictures of some of my smallest:

jazzrat2000 - 2009-10-01 12:56

I believe so

jazzrat2000 - 2009-10-01 13:12

Just found the Sharp, it is a JC-K99... no controls, buttons on the unit... it is 117x20x72 by my reckoning, so not a winner...

jazzrat2000 - 2009-10-01 13:14

PS the Sharp has a unique (as far as I know) short gumstick battery (46mm long)... a Sharp AD-B3, so does not need a screwon battery case, although it has one as well...

jazzrat2000 - 2009-10-01 13:39

here's a blurb about the Sharp: "November, 1989 Lightweight Headphone Stereo Cassette Player JC-K99: World's lightest (99g) by
using carbon glass fiber case"

fortexg - 2009-10-01 13:49

My 2 (Euro) Cents if I may:

@agent:
Your math is wrong (happens to the best of us) Big Grin
Sony WM-EX20 volume comes to 78.7 x 108.6 x 18.7 mm = 159.83 cm3
Another source lists very slightly different measurements: 77.7 x 108 x 18.7 mm = 156.92 cm3
http://www.hotbuyselectronics...._wm_ex20_walkman.htm
I think Sony did claim this to be the smallest Walkman ever...

@skippy:
I somehow doubt your measurements are correct Smile
The cassette itself measures 102 x 64 x 12 mm (base without protruding tabs & thick part is 100 x 64 x 8 mm). To fully enclose the cassette, the largest dimension should be at least 105 mm or so.
Based on your image of the unit next to a cassette (I measured the cassette to be 304 x 474 pixels, CP-3X 356 x 505), the dimensions seem to be closer to 107 * 75 mm (can't measure thickness); volume of Kenwood CP-3X then comes to 160.5 cm3.

Perhaps Nicole could measure her Hitachi CP-88R? I think this unit (without protruding buttons & cassette) is a strong candidate for first place...

PS: Sorry if I'm splitting hairs here, but that's how contests are won - by a split hair Wink

I remeasured it again and the overall lenth is about 102.5 to 103 mm at the very most.
It is 20mm thick
And it is 68.8mm to 69mm wide I just call it 69mm.
The cassette fits inside very very snug.
I'm not trying to win any contest either. No No I'm just showing my smallest walkman that I own.
If you think my measurements are off,then it must be a problem with my measuring device.
Nuff said! Wink

drmr2000 - 2009-10-01 14:37

Toshiba kt-as10? maybe the smallest don't own it so can't measure it.
Found it Sanyo jj-w6 wireless have this one but the Sanyo jj-w7 is smaller don't have that one.

Ah, sorry, I stand corrected I Agree
Perhaps you could also measure a cassette with your "measuring device" (a vernier caliper with .1 mm precision?) - would you believe I could not find any reference to cassette dimensions, even after extended googling (tape width, thickness & speed yes, but no dimensions whatsoever). I had to resort to a humble tape measure ...

rerooted - 2009-10-01 17:30

i have a cp-c7 kenwood which is one of my smaller ones. it goes 105mm.long X 25mm.thick X 75mm. wide. well that one isn't going to get it but the numbers were nice and even anyway. let me try a couple more....if i could measure inner volume it would do better.

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS GUYS AND GALS>> WOW AMAZING RESPONSE FROM SO MANY

AO sorry I was traveling other coast Florida just back amazed by such a detail and fast response from so many. I will measure this weekend and post pictures of what measured and side by side.
AO I have WM-150, WM-40, WM-701C, WM-EX20, WM-10, Sanyo JJ series also have the WM-WE01

DID we decide if the cassette must be inserted to player and included in measurements such as the WM-10, WM-40 etc ? ? Know some of these have been measured so will just confirm others numbers.

ao - 2009-10-02 00:24

The expandable unit issue worries me slightly as the dear old WM-10 was quite a shout when it was released in 1983 & therefore deserves a place in this topic. However, I never understood the fuss as, yes, the unit was small but with a cassette inserted it was by no means small & the cassette has to be stored somewhere so I was never really sure what the point was.

Tempted to suggest we don't compare the WM-10 with the later units which made a genuine effort to be small but retain the basic rudiments of a 'walkman' i.e. you put the cassette inside it.

If anyone disputes this, please speak now.

ao - 2009-10-02 01:03

Please, in order to consider each unit we do need the measurements.

OK, quick round-up & I'm going to throw in a couple of mine. Tim, can you measure you're K99 again as I make the length of mine to be 107mm?

In order
1. Sanyo JJ-P5 103x69x18=127.92 (see below)
2. Kenwood CP-3X 103X69X20=142.14 To be confirmed.
3. Sharp JC-K99 (AO) 107x73x20=156.22 (see below)
4. Sony WM-102 111x71x20=157.62
5. Sony WM-EX20 78.7x108.6x18.7=159.8 Sorry fortexg
6. Sony WM-150 107x72x21=161
7. Sharp JC-K99 (JR) 117x20x72=168.48
8. Sanyo ESP-7 109x94x17=174.18
9. Toshiba KT-AS10 102x65x28=185.64
10. Kenwood CP-C7 105x25x75=196.8

I'll have to measure my WM-FX511 and take a note of the measurements-but I think it's reasonbly compact.

aa.fussy - 2009-10-02 05:23

Would the WM-FX511 be considered compact for a Walkman that uses 1 AA battery?

This model houses the 1 AA battery under a cover on the front side- it doesn't use a external battery holder.

Here's some photos of it:

The cassette is inserted on the back side of the player-the front side has the controls.

autoreverser - 2009-10-02 06:05

Sony 701/702:

106,2 x 74 x 20 = 157,17 !!!

whoever measured the Sanyo or the Kenwood did it WITHOUT
the battery-compartment, the above WM-702 measurements
are taken from a unit INCLUDING gumstick-battery.

anyway, those outside-measurements are the maximum INCLUDING buttons, Kenwood/Sanyo WITHOUT buttons,

-and -

we would have to take an empty aquarium with rice,
fill it up to the top,
empty it and put each by each the competitors inside,
fill it up again and weigh the amount of rice that's
leftover - i actually BET that the 701/702 Sony IS the smallest.

Haven't done the rice-test yet, but i'm convinced there isn't a smaller walkman...

cool threat !!!

Have to say WM-701c black edition is at 157,17 but the Sony WM-701t is thicker because it is silver plated. Sanyo jj6 and some of the Sony EX's are pretty small to, it a hard one

ao - 2009-10-02 06:51

Hey Conrad, I was worried about the 702, this is a major contender.

On the Sanyo JJ, agreed it's measured without battery case but don't forget, this unit takes internal gumstick too.

We are measuring without buttons, and as we know, the 702 has very 'slight' logic buttons.

The rice test is perfect for this, I was thinking about doing something similar by sand displacement. Large jar full of fine kiln sand & weigh the spilt sand when each unit is pushed into it.

I'm going to maintain that the JJ is smaller than the 702, it's just unfortunate that it hails from a period before slim logic controls were the norm.

aa.fussy - 2009-10-02 08:43

According to Walkman Central, the EX618 from 1995 is described as " super-slim cassette-only Walkman".

Would that and the WM-FX511/613 from 1995 be considered slim Walkman?

ao - 2009-10-02 09:22

Sounds like a slim walkman, yes.

Is that what you mean?
