...and here's another small one...
One more and you're looking at a lifetime ban.
Where do you get this crap? does it come free with that Westman clone rubbish you hoard?
hahahahaaa, do i read any ENVY in your language?
westman-rubbish - ha !
make the "rice-test" with a westman and you have more rice then you can eat for a week leftover !
...infact: you can't even COMPRESS a westmanclone to the size of f.ex. a WM-702...
I think the rice will go into the littel walkman holes and
stuff
so it will not be acurate! , just say my hitachi is the bast and the smallst
We could do the rice test inside the Westman clone, more space than the aquarium etc, etc.
Hey, Conrad, went to see Jim Jones Review last night, right up your street. Best noise I've heard for a while.
WM-FX511:
Initial mesaurement:
L-10.5mm
W-8mm
D-2mm
Gives me a result of 168mm.
Will take some more mesaurements with different measuring tapes to give more results later.
Battery is insertered into a compartment on one face of the player-the front with all the controls and display.

Yes
as far as measuring goes i used a see through, flexible plastic ruler which was made for stamp collectors. the kenwood cp-c7 has only an internal battery box for a gumstick. there is no place for a sidecar attachment.
OK GROUP time to split hairs. I have endeavored to be as accurate as possible using a Digital micrometer caliper and for proper time period calculating the SECOND mini Casio portable calculator made in 1976. Please recheck my calculations as I have been doing this many hours and it is now 2:30 AM. Both my Father and Brother are engineers with combined total of 27 US Patents. My brother's company has several parts on the moon ( yeah supposed to stay there ) that he designed and manufactured. But duly noted I am not trained engineer by trade.
IMPORTANT NOTE To make volume measurements more accurate I have separately measured the bulge ( cassette thicker end for tape head ) and if Hinge is built out from side that also. This is done for the bulge with L x W x Ht noting some bulges have a somewhat wide taper thus my measurement taken from mid area of taper. Then the cm3 number is added to the case measurements. I would give my measurements accuracy of + - .1mm. I took measurement with wide flat (20 mm width ) caliper end going 20mm in from edge of Walkman. Note if some of you are measuring just in from edge this may give a less than actual measurement for most Walkman cases curve downward within 4-8 mm near edges as noted when I visually saw air space between caliper and case running outward from flat caliper edge. The findings may surprise some of you. In some cases I took several measurements and avg. them in different places on players. I am concerned with some members equipment to measure may not be calibrated to be accurate causing some variance in our final standings. I welcome anyone to verify what follows or request re measurement. AO I will depend on you to make the tally of results and add in to other players to give the rankings of models. My calculations show of the models I have and were measured the WM-701C a marvel of engineering though not the best sound to be smallest coming in at 137.75 cm3.
A surprise contender is the Panasonic RQ-SX71 @ 146.61 cm3 which TUNA had mentioned earlier. He has great knowledge of the RQ-SX and RQ-S Panasonic range.
MEASUREMENTS ON 11 MODELS Cassette Tape Case Measurements 58.32 cm3 so about 30% of smallest Walkmans are the actual cassette tape. GUMSTICK Battery is 6.4 cm3.
IMPRESSIVE THAT APPROX. 72.6 cm3 of space to cram that now ancient technology into. Cassette Tape TDK SA90 100 x 63.66 x 8.6 ( head access area 12 mm )
TDK SM-X90 100.18 x 63.7 x 8.55 ( 12 mm )
TDK MA-90 100.1 x 63.60 x 8.6 ( 12.05 mm )
Maxell XLII 100.2 x 63.74 x 8.67 ( 12.05 mm )
Panasonic
RQ-S75 22.8 x 76.96 x 108.3 = 190.03 cm3
RQ-S44 22.15 x 73.17 x 106.88 = 173.22 cm3
RQ-SX72 17.85 ( 19.40 ) x 75.2 x 109 = 146.31 + 3.55 (Bulge same as SX71) = 149.86 cm3
RQ-SX71 17.5 (18.94 Bulge ) x 75 x 109 = 143.06 cm3
Bulge 1.44 x 22.6 x 109 = 3.55 +143.06 = TOTAL for SX71 146.61 cm3
RQ-SX-91 17.8 (19.2 ) x 75.1 x 109.1 = 145.84 = 5.5 (Bulge) = 151.34 cm3
Bulge 36 x 1.4 x 109.1 = 5.5
SANYO
JJ-F4 21.1 ( 22.4 ) x 70.5 x 104.5 = 155.45 cm3
3.31 cm3 NOT added FM plate bulge on front if add total is 158.76 cm3
Note: The JJ-P4 ( no radio) I have coming from Germany looks to be noticebly smaller in volume as it has a small bulge in door on about 1/4 of top and the JJ-F4 here the door is flat no bulge and additional rise for FM radio in door. I will measure the P4 as soon as it arrives approx. Oct. 10. My guess is the P4 will be about 140 cm3 not enough to win smallest , we shall see soon. AIWA
HS-PX610 20.2 x 74.5 x 106.44 = 160.18 cm3
SONY WM-150
20.0(21.3 Bulge) x 71(72 Hinge) x 106.5 = 152.74+2.23(Bulge)+1.88(Hinge)=156.85 cm3
Bulge 88 x 23 x 1.1 = 2.23 cm3
Hinge 84.7 x 20.2 x 1 = 1.88 cm3
WM-701C
18.1 (19.3 Bulge) x 70.4 (71.8 Hinge) x 104.8 = 133.54 + 2.02 + 2.19 = 137.75 cm3
Bulge 22.7 x 74 x 1.2 = 2.02 cm3
Hinge 19.3 x 81 x 1.4 = 2.19 cm3
WM-EX20
NOTE: I have two measured both with a .1 and .2 mm found difference which is minimal 17 (18.8 ) x 76.4 + 108.4 = 141.04 + 5.17 = 146.21 cm3
Bulge 1.8 x 26.5 x 108.4 = 5.17 cm3
NOTE these measurements very close to another members but that thickest part of player measurement used for entire player giving a larger than actual volume. WM-WE01
18.8 ( 21.5 ) x 76.3 x 108.4 = 155.49 + 14.05 = 169.54 cm3
Bulge 2.7 x 48 x 108.4 = 14.05 cm3
Will measure over weekend following additional models :
WM-EX1 , WM-EX808 , WM-F100III
For Référence WM-40 and WM-10 with and without Tape
A comment earlier that Sony claimed the WM-EX20 to be the smallest Walkman. I believe correctly that Sony claimed this model to be the THINNEST at 17 mm Walkman ever made not smallest. But WOW it certainly is NOT the lightest this player is Really heavy. Amazing quality feel in hand.
Of mention is the Sanyo ESP-P7 that AO has as 17mm ties the EX20 as thinnest Walkman.

rightyright, going to beat the tubs tonight at a GAMMELFLEISCH- concert, probably THAT'S worst !!!
John, you ROCK! Thanks for the hard work. Are you guy still gonna do the "rice test", or should we just agree that the 701C is the smallest?

Thank you Elite. Above is the most recent input by AO of list of contenders and rank. AO you should measure the SANYO JJ-P5 thickness without bulge then measure bulge height and subtract from rest of unit thickness then approximate the length and width of bulge and multiply by what the bulge height is and add to base unit volume made without bulge. Appears the JJ-P5 is winner. AO with my measurement some of models change rank such as the WM-EX20.
It is surprising the ole 701C ranks so well for a 79 built player.
AO if you could review all recent posts and update ranking be great. A possible problem with rice or sand test is that members with some of the high ranking units may not be able to do this test to verify measurement method rankings.
The Panasonic RQ-SX71 at 146.61 cm3 is an interesting addition to top ten. Of notation is I just bought a RQ-S60 Panasonic that seller quotes measurements from Owner manual as 18mm x 106mm x 73.6mm = 140.42 but will have to confirm this in 2 weeks when receive player. This would place the RQ-S60 in top 10 also.
Perhaps there could be a list of all the measurements made users in this thread.
Here is rest of my models that I have measured. Am really tired its 1 am so am just going to post for now the final cm3 number.
WM-F100III 172.49 cm3
with Gumstick battery case attached to bottom
WM-EX1 167.15 cm3
WM-EX808 163.40 cm3
DO NOT COUNT THE OLD WM-10 OUT YET !!! WM-10 CLOSED 133.63
OPEN w Cassette 155.50
WM-10RV (WM-40) CLOSED 183.09
OPEN 210.75 NOT so Small
Here are some interesting measurements
TPS-L2 330.28 cm3 nearly 3x size of smallest Walkman
WM-5 243.66 cm3
TOSHIBA KT-R2 LARGEST WALKMAN I HAVE 594.73 cm3
Here stacked is one of the smallest to LARGEST
WM-701C
WM-5
TPS-L2
Toshiba KT-R2
Is that KT-R2 rare? Does it work? Also John, check your PM.
Hi Elite , yes the KT-R2 is pretty rare unit. I actually have two Toshiba KT-R2 and one KT-R1 ( very rare) They are almost identical but the R2 has the Toshiba Automatic Music search feature very amazing on such an early unit. One of the units works well other two need belts. Must say the KT-R1 with FM tuner module has the most amazing stereo channel separation wide sound field of ANY FM on a cassette player I have heard. Elite you can see the R1 and R2 side by side on my topic
My Toshiba Collection Just got a Infinity RS-002 (FIRST WALKMAN with DOLBY B ) with FM module yesterday in perfect mint like new condition and working excellent must say the radio insert module for this works flawless easy station tuning lock on strong and also excellent wide sound field and clear was surprised actually but wow BIG too.
