A colorful topic if ever there was one. Metal bodied"GREEN" walkmans are the rarest of color found on walkmans ( Gold Also ). I must admire Sony for they have created walkmans with such unique visual impact due to metals, finish of metal and color/metallic coatings.

I have taken photos with bright direct sunlight, outdoors in shade, flash and incandescent bulb lighting. These examples especially the EX7 and EX501 show very different hues of green , levels of metallic (Greatly affected by angle of viewing) and even metal surface patterns. I hope you all enjoy these unique pictures as some are truly astonishing in beauty. Sadly I did not get the most rare WM-EX7 until after St. Patricks day.

SONY WM-EX7

This model was offered in Gold, Blue/Violet ( have this Thanks DrMR200 ), Green and Silver in 98/99. Truly one of Sony's most visually clean unique designs and with its top logic control single button. Very good sounding player with beautiful blue backlight remote. Note how text print can appear Neon Green or sky blue.

A unusual green hue on this not common HS-PL77. Here a interesting visual effect with the slight concave partial surface.

Ah what was Sony thinking.... I guess after 20 years little was left to create something original and different... VIOLA the "BEAN" inexpensive players the EQ series. In 99 the EQ9 was released in Orange and Green having a single speaker housed in the door and a unique open mesh front. For a $1 I could not pass it up and it works great. Why is it when you pay lots of money for player it rarely works as described and the cheapest purchase ones usually work perfect.

The Panasonic RQ-SX52 also has unusual color hue and a very metallic finish. I actually am lucky to have two both boxed and Green. A low serial number on this one of 9971 !

The Sony WM-EX909 one of only four models with duel heads eliminating need for head to adjust up and down thus having no azimuth adjustment.
Actually only 2 models plus versions with Radio.
This is by far the darkest green walkman appearing nearly black sometimes unless a strong light is upon surface. A great sounding performing newer model player. Was released 92/93 in Black, Silver and GREEN.

Remote has the fun display of "walking" WALKMAN letters moving right to left. Also bottom right a 5 bar display with blank bar indicating position on tape current song playing is. Nice idea as looking in window of many new players with small window in low light you cant tell where tape is.

Last but not least the Sony WM-EX501 a stunning example of how angles effect color and level of metallic reflection. This player has so many different colors of green depending on light Amazing. Even more so that this was not a higher end model for Sony. It was made in 2000 with a good frequency response of 40-18,000. Excellent bass boost settings that dont muddy up the sound as most extended bass systems on Walkmans can do. No dolby on this model which for me is fine I rarely use it. Great machine for daily use IMO. Used at gym twice now easy to jump songs and plays relatively loud but stays undistorted up all way. This one is BRAND NEW IN THE BOX !! nice find.

one question keeps popping up in my head and this is it. why is it that the vast majority of the cassette players sold in the united states are 3 colors ? they are yellow, black and silver. WHY THE HECK DID THIS HAPPEN? i guess this fact will forever remain the same.........

johnedward - 2010-08-06 17:39

One must wonder why generally color was just not made on walkmans. My guess George is 50% of walkmans are BLACK another 35% SILVER/Grey next BLUE or RED 10% and remaining colors 5%. Only speaking of METAL bodied as plastic we all know the heavy use of YELLOW but yellow metal body is very rare.
Color over time in many items sold often increases sales. Hell look at IPOD colors seems far more are color than black or white or silver. Guess we will never know the thinking on this during the 80's and 90's Frown

In past many months I have purchased very few walkmans due to serious financial difficulties. But being green I did bid and get lucky recently winning a SONY WM-EX77 in a pastel green for $15.
Will post pictures when it arrives.
