SUPERB FUNCTIONING PLAYER, UPGRADED CAPACITORS and NEW BELT DONE BY DrMR2000 we all know to be a most capable walkman repair member.  ( note he has for personal reasons been absent from forum since Sept.). Read below for details of this higher performing player over original ( increased amplifier power).

       I acquired this Sony WM-EX808HG Boxed in what appeared to be unused condition.   It needed a belt.  I am unable to de solder pcb boards to get to belts on newer models.   As you can see it is a UK issued model with UK charger and label on box including price in GBP.    Back in March 2010 I sent several of my Walkman to DrMR2000 ( Maurice in Chicago USA, he and I had become good online friends, he is a electrical and mechanical engineer a most capable walkman repair person many members have used although he has become not active for personal reasons in past many months). I sent this EX808HG to him for new belt.   AS you all know Maurice is probably one of the most capable electronics engineer ( and mechanical) on the forum (He in recent past designed one of Intels Chips ) with many detailed repairs of fine walkman including my RQ-S80 and S60 he used as example pictures for a post on belt replacement).   When he rebelted the 808 with Sony orig. belt and played unit he said the sound was not what should be.  Upon checking the PCB he found some capacitors that had readings slightly off from specification.   He said he could replace some of the capacitors with better grade/performing caps that would increase amplifier output and sound quality.   Time not use had started a few capacitors to lose proper function.  Since many of the later model players had dismal amp output of 4 or 5mw ( the 808 is 5mw per channel) and can not drive headphones to any sort of louder volume.   I agreed for him to do so.   He was thrilled with the result and said that unit played noticeably louder and sounded better.  I too am very impressed with better performance of this player.  He noted that from condition of player and internals it appeared to have for most part never been used.   That would explain the extraordinary cosmetic condition.  Not only is this a very rare Walkman in near FLAWLESS ( one TINY nick on back top edge) BUT having been completely checked out and new belt and capacitors modified to make this great player a Extraordinary ONE OF A KIND best of best in this model.  Chrome walkman due to finish are almost never flawless cosmetically.

  I find NIB players often have electrical problems on pcb board and bad belt due to passage of time.  Also NIB never used the belts have flat areas where they have sat for 10-20 years with pressure against guide wheels causing wow/flutter.  Sometimes occasional use I believe is very good for the players and electronics inside vs. many years without any current flowing.

   The ultra rare earbud foam pads are intact with one having slight edge deformed from storage in bag with owner manual.  They have started to become sticky and are not in condition to be put on the earbuds but you have them.  I have put them in jewelers gem folded paper case ( owned Jewelry store in past) that has special wax paper inside that should stop damage of foam sticking to plastic or anything else.   These foam pads are BEYOND RARE TO FIND with this model.

SPECIAL NOTE ON POWER SOURCES FOR NEW MODEL PLAYERS and specifically observations on this player.

  The player does NOT like the 900 and especially 1400 mAh gumstick batteries.  Sometimes when they are used ( instead of the 600 mAh what it came with) a Very low level sound is heard when vol. is all way down that is like a hum with morse code like interuptions ( were talking ultra faint).  I discovered this when it started to do this I know some walkmans start to do odd things when battery power is going low but not low enough to stop player or indicator light go off so I put on the Add on AA battery and sound went totally away.  I took out the 1400 gumstick and put in 600 and it went away.   As with nearly all sony’s when you switch on the megabass it adds a slight distortion or muddy up of sound.  This happens minimally with this player but mostly only on the mid setting. In the off position its perfect no added sound or hum and on high bass also not noticeable.  I guess each player does have its own odd behaviors.    Also noted that once I had a Maxell tape cause a intermittent chitter sound in background with this player.   When I put in a That’s Suano (finest metal tape ever made) sound was perfect.   Only someone who is a serious collector and also audiophile as I am would probably notice these things.   Again because I know of them I share them with the forum community.

I certainly seem to notice that the cleanest best sound is had when the add on battery is used not the gumstick.  I have found this true with most post 90's players of any model and most especially of the newer high end Panasonics they just hate running when the power of battery starts to drop even a little I have noticed they don’t want to start playing or sound becomes slightly dull ( speaking here of after 90's Panasonics).  This player is just fine with a fully charged 600 mAh gumstick.
