God damn it, give me a day or two
Great to get this one started up again.

You're going to hate me but I've found it.
It's a tricky one folks and it's not a unit we've featured on this site but to help you it's from one of the larger well-known manufacturers and dated around 1990.

Sony WM-600.
I've never owned one, but it does look so nice.

Plop, is it any special version of the AIWA JX-505? JX50?
It's very close to my JX505, but there has the radio selector

It is indeed an AIWA but no it is not a JX50 or 505.

Here's another crop of the same model. Sorry for the low quality detail, but hopefully you get the idea.
walkman.archive - 2012-01-02 01:43
Plop, I believe it's an aiwa player released on 89-90 and probably an asian market targeted, right?
please post any other image, but not so big as the last one, please; don't make life so easy to us ;-)
plop - 2012-01-02 01:57
I will say that it is an extremely rare AIWA and one that has not been much at all.
plop - 2012-01-03 01:15
I am somewhat amazed that no-one has identified the second walkman yet.
@Hurodal
You're close, but keep digging and you might get the answer.
walkman.archive - 2012-01-03 12:25
Got it! It's the AIWA HS-JL505
In fact, this is the very photo you took the crop from, right? ;-)
plop - 2012-01-03 13:18
Correct it is a JL50/505. You have found the portrait styled JL505. The JL50 is landscape styled. The JL50 was a Japan only model, whereas the JL505 was very popular in China.
It is a strange hybrid of three AIWA models : the JX50/505, F50/505, and RL50. It is also one of only five ever models that AIWA made with a variable slide BBE controller. The others being the PX50/505, PL50/505, J55/505/505MKII, and RL50.
The second crop shows also another special feature of the JL50/505, a screw hole. This is the mount for the external speaker, as also found on the F50/505. The JL30/303 also featured an external speaker, but to my knowledge only the 50/505 models had an additional screw mount. Interestingly the external speaker also works with the RL50, although there is no screw mount to secure the two parts together.
I used stock pictures, but I will be getting my JL50 soon.

It's a nice unit, indeed. I have the good J505 with BBE slider too, and it's new, boxed.
Very interesting the speaker, I didn't know.
Now I start another one. Mine is not so difficult as yours. Let's see how long last until someone discover it...
walkman.archive - 2012-01-11 05:41
Hmmm... nobody has any idea of which walkman is this?
Maybe is it so difficult?

Wow, Plop, you're an AIWA expert! So fast and accurate!
Yes, this is a rare green RX50. Is this an asian-only model, right? I've not seen on occidental catalogues...
The RX50 is -correct me if I'm wrong- the same as the JX505 without recording capabilities, right? This beautiful green unit is one of my latest acquisitions. It has an Amorphous HX head but sadly lacks the bi-azimuth system.
And for my happyness, it came in fully working condition. I suppose the seller changed belts, caps, etc...
Now your turn? ;-)
plop - 2012-01-21 09:35
Actually the RX50 is closer to the PL70 than the JX50. In fact you could almost say that it is a PL70 with radio tuner as they both share the same chassis. Except that the PL70 has three stage BBE and the RX50 only has two stage BBE, and has an amorphous HX head over the PL70's permalloy HX head.
AIWA completely reworked the PCB design to make this updated alpha tape transport even slimmer. Being a newer design you will note that the alpha transport in this model has a different pinch roller assembly for better tape transport stability. Another benefit of this redesign means that if you remove the back cover you will find that it is the only piece required to be removed in order to replace the belt.

Thanks for the info, Plop. it's so interesting.
The PL70 isn't a very well-known model. Did AIWA released only for asian markets or worldwide?
plop - 2012-01-22 04:11
The PL70 is the Japan only version of the rest of world released PL707.
The world does seem to have generally overlooked the PL70/707. Perhaps since around the time of its launch, the JX70/707 stole most of the thunder away, with its Voice Navigation. With the revised alpha tranport internals the PL70/707 is a very compact yet well featured player, even thinner than the play only PL50/505. The sound reproduction is quality AIWA. The 3 stage BBE is a nice touch, as too the 2 stage DSL.
The only minor things letting this little player down is the lack of Dolby C, but then the PL50/505 didn't come with Dolby C either. For a model with 2 stage DSL, the bass range should have been extended lower with the use of 470uF or 330uF capacitors instead of the now standard 220uF capacitors fitted and no amorphous HX head, but then it would not have been an L series alpha model then. The latter two faults can be easily custom upgraded to create an awesome little compact player.
I believe the PL707 only came in black, but the PL70 came in at least two other colours; bright red and navy blue. I suspect there may also have been a silver one too, as AIWA seemed to have silver as the default secondary colour for many of its Japan only alpha transport based models, but I have yet to see one.

I think my AIWA HS-PL77 may also share some of the same mechanics as the PL70 and RX50. This has a two stage DSL and a Hard Permalloy Head it also has a PLSS switch.

Nope, the PL77 shares the same tape mechanics as the JX707 and PX610. If you see my JX707 head mod thread you will see that I salvage a HX head from the PX610 and the screen print on the PX610 clearly says PL77.
