Walkmans in Movies (The Terminator & Super 8)

walkman.archive - 2012-02-10 15:22

hi there,

I recently seen 'Super 8', the latest Spielberg movie and saw that guy at the fuel station with a walkman, an TPS-L2, the version released before the final Walkman logo.

I was also capturing frames from the final scene of The Terminator and TheLion remembered me that at the begginning of this movie appears another walkman, so I finished capturing frames from this movie and from Super 8 and added to my website.

However, I post here some frames so you can see what walkmans are.

I remember another post about walkmans and movies in thos forum; do you remember another famous movie with walkmans (apart from 'pretty woman' Back to the future' and those two?)

Well, to my knowledge, black ones were available back then, but not rounded. Look at this shots:

TPS-L2

These are images taken from the SONY Walkman anniversary CD. Here is seen the MDR-3 original headphones with black foam. And below they can be seen clearly:

TPS-L2_15

Oh, another error I've just seen is that in the user's manual we can see the rounded walkman logo, but the walkman itself don't have it embossed in the blue door. when the rounded logo was launched, it was embossed in the TPS-L2 at the bottom area, like the one you see in this anniversary image.

In Terminator that's the Toshiba KT-P22 the Japanese Version aka KT-1950 world version. there is also a black version. The headphones appeared in the movie are original Toshiba that was sold with that recorder.

As a matter of fact there is one available right now on ebay for $19.99 who ever interested: http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAG...66720#ht_4430wt_1164

There are two models in this movie:

The first scene model is the Toshiba AM/FM Cassette Player KT-S3MkII (1983) it is almost identical to the KT-S3 (1982) except for the blue framed door. there is also the KT-S4 (1984) which has different markings with orange logo.

It's hard to see and recognize from the above picture but you can clearly see the Tuner pack dial slot and the blue frame.

The second Toshiba appears close to the end of the movie is a cassette recorder with a speaker without the Tuner pack slot.

Excellent info, TheLion. Thanks for it.

Also, the other clue that the headphones are not originals is the way the plug comes off the player;  at a 90 degree angle instead of straight up.

Other movies with walkmans (other than BTTF) is:

Iron Eagles - Aiwa HS-F2 Cassetteboy recorder

Fast Times at Ridgemont High - Sony WM-3?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) - no idea

FernGully - not sure what player that is supposed to be

Guardians of the Galaxy - Sony TPS-L2 w/MDR-5A headphones

Well seen david! I didn't noticed that.

There's also A view to a kill (007) -> a Sony Sports WM-F5

Footloose (original, not the new one), but could not realize which one is.

A friend just gave me an old hard drive containing movies, and I just saw a TPS-L2 in (the very bad) superman IV (didn't know there was a IV ! ), used like a remote control...

I'm sure that when this will be known, prices on ePay will go down !!!

Oh yeah....

Forgot to mention: It looks like a Realistisc stereo-mate walkman (not sure which one) with a Realistic Nova 45 headphone.

Nice hmmmm...... walkman

Hello there,

I've just updated my 'Extras' page with three new movies: Another 48Hrs, A view to a kill and Guardians of the galaxy.

In 48hrs, eddie murphy has an unidentified JVC.

another_forty_eight_hours

In a view to a kill some spies are recording a secret conversation with a WM-F5, which BTW doesn't have any recording feature ...

A view to a kill

In guardians of the galaxy it appears the popular TPS-L2.

Here's a modified Walkman in Home Alone 2. Macaulay Culkin's character carries  around a tape recorder called the Talkboy, which is a functional (shows movement) prop in the film. They later made a toy version for sale to the general public.

Gx35HomeAlone2_0005_Layer 1Gx35HomeAlone2_0003_Layer 3

As The film version is a prop, they had to use a tape mechanism from an existing player. And they used... a WM-GX35!fm_am_walkman_wm_gx35_785079

This is pretty obvious in these 2 shots where the "T" for the reel hub is visible. This gives it away as a WM-150 mechanism, as they have lettering on them (T for Takeup, S for Supply). They chose to color the reel's lettering white to show movement more clearly.Gx35HomeAlone2_0004_Layer 2

In this shot, They did not color the reel, but a late 80s TDK TypeII/IV tape is visible.Gx35HomeAlone2_0000_Layer 6

In this shot we can see the buttons of the GX35, as well as the telltale LEDs. You can also see the grey paint wearing off the "DIR" button, which is usually green.Gx35HomeAlone2_0001_Layer 5

The actual toy is made using a cheaper, generic mechanism. As a result, the shape and design changes as the GX35 is far smaller and has its heads on the door. No EX Heads, Chrome compatibility or Auto Reverse for real kids! At least they won't have clutch issues either... Talkboy_recorder
